When The World Runs Out Of Food, This Is All You Need

When The World Runs Out Of Food, This Is All You Need

Katherine Paterson by Katherine Paterson
February 10, 2023

By 2050 the world could have more people than food. According to Professor Julian Cribb, a worldwide food crisis is imminent and approaching fast.

While the leading solution proposed by Cribbs and other experts in the field is a global switch to vegetarianism, this presents its own challenges.

Many experts believe that 10 billion is the max cut-off point for the population, and supporting any more than that number is almost impossible.

Even if everyone agrees to avoid eating meat, significant challenges related to soil, climate, land, and access must be considered.

Thus, with population increases, climate change, and an impending financial crisis, we need to consider this issue a genuine concern and plan accordingly.

When The World Runs Out Of Food…

When The World Runs Out Of Food, This Is All You Need

We should all be worried if predictions are correct, and many people believe they are. However, even if the current projection of running out of food by 2050 is entirely wrong, there is still significance.

Dwindling food access is far more of a concern than running out of food.

Related: The Seedbank You Need To Build Before The Upcoming Food Shortage

Multiple factors contribute to food access, and getting food from the farm to the table is a complex process that has already seen some significant issues.

Ongoing challenges currently and continually impact society, regardless of location. Thus, whether you believe we will ‘run out of food’, preparing for a time when access to food may become difficult is a good idea.

There are many ways to protect yourself against a food shortage, and there is no reason you can not start today. While these practices may help you prepare for disaster, they can also help you to save cash you can put away for a rainy day.

Foraging

Foraging is the act of gathering food from the wild and is an excellent way to supplement your diet for free.

While foraging has recently gained mainstream popularity, for centuries, many cultures have relied on foraging for survival, with entire cultures being built upon the idea.

When The World Runs Out Of Food, This Is All You NeedAs recently as WW2, gathering wild rosehips to create syrup was essential to many people.

Wild rosehip allowed people to supplement vitamin C at a time when importing fruit like oranges was widely restricted.

Foraging food from the wild gives you access to a seasonal supermarket outside your front door.

What Can I Forage?

The list of things that can be foraged is extensive, and with some knowledge and experience, you can gather a substantial amount of food.

What you forage will depend on where you live. However, below are a few examples.

When The World Runs Out Of Food, This Is All You NeedWild Garlic: One plant you can quickly identify and forage is wild garlic.

This helpful plant can be found lining the banks of streams and rivers as it thrives in damp ground.

Wild garlic can be used in various ways and foraged from late March onwards.

Identifying wild garlic is relatively easy, and it is generally the scent that indicates this plant. Wild garlic has a strong, pungent aroma that is distinctly garlic.

Unfortunately, it is essential to note that, like many plants, wild garlic is not without copycats.

In Canada and the US, Lily of the Valley is a look-a-like that can cause confusion. The flowers, fruit, and leaves of the Lily of the Valley plant are poisonous.

When The World Runs Out Of Food, This Is All You NeedElderberries and Elderflowers: From late May to early July, a plant dots the landscape, signifying the start of nice weather.

Elderflowers are commonly used to create cordial, a tasty, liqueur-like beverage but can also be used to make other items like jam, yogurt, or sorbet.

Related: 79 Edible Flowers in North America (with Pictures)

The plant’s berries also have many uses, making this double-harvest plant one to treasure.

When The World Runs Out Of Food, This Is All You NeedNettles: Stinging nettles are one of the easiest wild greens to identify.

However, if you hope to forage this plant, you will need a thick pair of gloves.

Stinging nettle grows abundantly throughout North America, thriving in damp soil.

The plant, often harvested for food or to create various dyes, can grow up to six feet tall in some locations and is usually found growing along the roadside in dense patches.

When The World Runs Out Of Food, This Is All You NeedBlackberries and Raspberries: Most people remember picking and eating wild berries as children.

These delicious morsels can be found growing throughout the world and make a delightful treat. Blackberries are most abundant in autumn and are easy to identify.

You can pick as many as you can carry and freeze them to enjoy as a tasty treat throughout the year or use them to make sweet jams or pies.

When The World Runs Out Of Food, This Is All You NeedChestnuts: There are many wild nuts that you can forage.

One of the most popular wild nuts is the sweet chestnut.

Sweet chestnuts are great for making pesto and are excellent when added to your holiday stuffing.

These nuts can also be roasted and enjoyed on their own. You will surely be delighted no matter how you choose to enjoy the sweet chestnut, which can be found throughout the US.

When The World Runs Out Of Food, This Is All You NeedDandelion: Often viewed as an annoying weed that dots front yards across the country, dandelion is easy to identify and can be safely consumed if adequately washed.

Eat it raw or use it in your cooking. All parts of this plant are edible, although they are a bit bitter.

Foraging for food can be a great way to save money or make ends meet. It may also come in handy should we face a food shortage.

If you want to learn more about foods you can forage for, here you will find all you need to know about the superweeds that saved large communities during the Great Depression.

However, if you plan to forage, there are a few things you should remember:

  • Know what you are picking.
  • Only take what you will eat.
  • Ask permission before foraging on private property.
  • Leave some for other foragers.
  • Never forage for rare species.

Grow Your Food

Growing your own food is one of the best ways to protect yourself against a potential crisis.

Natural disasters, floods, droughts, fires, a financial crisis, a delay in shipping, a collapse of the government, or any other situation that could potentially impact access to food are not far-fetched ideas anymore.

For most of us, it is not the fear of a zombie apocalypse – instead, the current economic climate and actions of the government fuel prepping. So what better way to prepare than through self-sufficiency?

Nothing is more empowering than growing a garden and harvesting food in your yard. For more helpful information, check out this guide on how to make a year-round self-sustaining garden.

Whether you live on a large, rural property or in a small apartment in the city, you can grow your own food and cushion against a future food crisis.

Even if you lack the luxury of a yard that can house a large garden, there are still many plants that you can grow.

Growing Indoors

growing tomatoes indoorYou can create a garden, even indoors, in a small space. Use pots and planters to turn your home into a garden that will work as a supermarket.

Here are some foods you can grow indoors: radishes, mandarin oranges, carrots, potatoes, tomatoes, avocados, greens, microgreens, herbs.

To create a fully-functional indoor garden, you will need some supplies. Not all these things are mandatory, but they will increase your chance of success.

  • Light: you may be able to provide an ample amount of natural sunlight if you have large windows and are in the right area. Alternatively, you may want to utilize a grow light to encourage plant health.
  • Potting mix: A good potting mix is essential to a healthy crop.
  • Containers: An assortment of containers in various sizes is a must-have for any aspiring gardener.

Related: 61 Fruits and Veggies You Can Grow in Buckets

  • Water: An obvious necessity for any garden.
  • Humidity: Depending on what you plant to grow, you may need to purchase something that allows you to control and monitor the humidity of your space.
  • Air circulation: Circulating the air is essential.
  • Temperature control: You need to be able to monitor and control the temperature.
  • Fertilizer: You need to feed the soil, which will feed the plants.

Growing food could be a lifesaving decision should we face any crisis that impacts access. If you can grow even a few plants in your home, you will be well ahead in the face of disaster.

Preserving Foods

preservationWhile a garden is handy, what do you do with the excess food you grow?

This is where preserving comes in and saves the day.

For many years people have been preserving and pickling foods for the future.

While that jar of pickled radishes your grandma made may look scary, chances are good that they are still edible even today.

Learning to safely store food and preserve it long-term may help you overcome adversity should you find yourself in a food crisis.

What And How To Preserve

There are various ways to store and maintain foods. Popular options include the use of a root cellar or cold storage.

A root cellar, or cold storage, can be created in many places, such as a cellar, basement, or crawl space. If you don’t have a root cellar, here’s a cheap and easy way to build a root cellar in your backyard.

Some good choices for root cellar storage include: cabbage, carrots, peppers, beets, apples, peaches, onions, garlic, squash etc.

Outside of root cellars and cold storage, there are many other options for extending the shelf life of food.

Drying or dehydrating is another popular choice. This option often requires a professional dehydrator, although there are methods of dehydrating food (such as fruits, veggies, and meats)  using your oven.

Canning is another popular alternative. Canning often requires access to a professional canner and other canning equipment. These items are available online, and some retailers offer payment plans.

You can also can without equipment using a method called a water bath. In water bath canning, a large stock pot is used to seal jars and preserve the contents. Canning food essentially causes it to be frozen in time so that it can be eaten weeks, months, and even years later.

Raise Your Own Livestock

livestockWhile you could live off the vegetables you grow in your garden, you may want to eat meat sometimes. Meat is an essential aspect of many diets and is valuable to your health.

Should we find ourselves in a food crisis, the cost of meat is almost sure to skyrocket.

Related: Livestock Animals You Should Start Raising For The Upcoming Economic Crisis

The meat industry heavily relies on processing and transportation to get food to your table. Any issues in production will take their toll and can hinder your ability to access this vital food source.

Raising livestock is an option you may want to consider. Depending on where you live, you may be able to have chickens or small animals on your property.

Chickens are an excellent choice as they provide eggs and access to poultry. Cows, on the other hand, can give both milk and meat in an emergency.

Before becoming a livestock farmer, look into your area’s laws to ensure you can house, raise, and slaughter animals on your property.

A Harsh World Diet

Should humanity see the day when we actually run out of food, life will quickly become a challenging struggle for us all. Think back to the chaos of the 2020 toilet paper shortage and imagine that, but with a lot of angry, hungry people.

If predictions are correct and our food sources are to become scarce, we are guaranteed to see widespread effects, probably accompanied by violence, looting, and more.

Finding ways to become more self-sufficient today could make a big difference tomorrow.

The ideas shared here are merely a few of many. There are lots of ways you can adjust your current lifestyle and prepare for the future.

I would love to hear your thoughts on preparing for a food shortage, and I want to know how you feel about the current prediction timeline.

    An unfortunate title.

When the song of the land is “Mommy I’m HUNGRY” it’s going to get ugly.

You might want to look up

Holodomor (Ukrainian: Голодомо́р, romanized: Holodomor, IPA: [ɦolodoˈmɔr];[7] derived from морити голодом, moryty holodom, ‘to kill by starvation’),[a][8][9][10] also known as the Terror-Famine[11][12][13] or the Great Famine,[14] was a man-made famine in Soviet Ukraine from 1932 to 1933 that killed millions of Ukrainians. The Holodomor was part of the wider Soviet famine of 1932–1933 which affected the major grain-producing areas of the Soviet Union.[15]

While scholars universally agree that the cause of the famine was man-made, whether the Holodomor constitutes a genocide remains in dispute.[16][17][18][19] Some historians conclude that the famine was planned and exacerbated by Joseph Stalin in order to eliminate a Ukrainian independence movement.[b][20] Others suggest that the famine arose because of rapid Soviet industrialisation and collectivization of agriculture.[21][22][23]

Ukraine was one of the largest grain-producing states in the USSR and was subject to unreasonably higher grain quotas, when compared to the rest of the USSR.[24][25][c] This caused Ukraine to be hit particularly hard by the famine

Plenty more available past this snip. Note well the MAN MADE FAMINE in a breadbasket of Russia.

People say “we are NOT Russia, it will never happen here”.

Tell that to the political prisoners of Jan 6th who can only get out by confessing to a “crime”.

Jan 6th “Commission” a Soviet Style Star Chamber that has SEALED their records for 50 years (Look it up and thank Shiff)

I wonder how many more chickens need to be killed for a “Bird Flu” and how many more accidents in food processing plants need to happen this year?

Praying for wisdom, protect your family. The DC clowns will not.

Exactly, chestnuts have been going for many many years. Folks it your plan is to forage to survive? You are doomed. The Indians did a lot of foraging, hunting and fishing. Game was more plentiful, the land had much more edibles around. And they knew what they were doing. And still they died of starvation by the 1000s, each and every season. Preparation and prepping is our best hope. Knowing eatable plants is great, but you better have a plan? Hope for the best and prepare for the worst. PRAY and God bless all

Be careful about stating times when fruit is ripe. Blackberries may be ready to pick in the autumn wherever up north where you live, but they’re ready in the spring…late May into early June…where I live. Same with dewberries.
Passionflower is later in the summer and into the fall.
    Persimmons are ready in August-Sept.
Prickly pear tunas are ripe around the same time, though the pads are available year-round.
Of course, there are acorns, juniper berries, elderberry, grapes, redbud, and others.

There may be a “food shortage” coming but not because the Earth can’t produce enough food for at least 10 to 12 Billion people. Demographic trends hint that the world population will peak at 10 Billion or less. Any food shortage will primarily be CAUSED by bad governmental policies/regulations.

Man puts a LIMIT on the population here on Earth. Because he is Selfish and Very Greedy and is Evil, also.
Over population, just like climate control, it is a LIE also…

Why discuss the discuss the disaster known as the state of disunion? We have more important things to do like celebrating Black History. And then Latino History. But never American History because it’s too homophobic. We aren’t the United States, we are the Diversified States. We don’t need no stinking common bond, we need to divide ourselves up into ethnic groups and blame America for our problems

The funny thing, it’s always been Minority privilege. The 1776 history is good & bad parts, but 1619 BS is brainwashing. Slavery was and is worldwide, not restricted to only White Demoncrats. There were in Black culture slave owners that actually owned White & Black slaves. So not only in the USA but worldwide also, past and present.

The historical facts have been given a slight twist for political Marxist reasons.
We now know the sex & slave culture still exist with the open Southern Border of the USA. The current DC Swamp administration secretly supports this, in keeping the borders open. Letting the Chinese surrogate Mexican drug cartels do the dirty work.

Morgan Freeman actor once told on an TV interview Blacks don’t need a Black history month.
There are too many cultures in the USA that still cling to their foreign cultures. They identify for example; I’m a African-American, I’m a Irish-American. We live in America, we’re all Americans, we are the United States of America. Not the united states of what ever culture being used as a pawn by Marxist.
The hyphenated-American is just another divider to the American culture.

Morgan Freeman in the interview had some good points that we Americans have forgotten or never been taught in Marxist teacher’s public schools.
The purpose of grade is to teach the 3-R’s, not the crt crap & 1619 project Marxism.

No wonder many citizens are dumb & stupid, public schools curriculum have gone off the railroad tracks. We need strong educated citizens to run America’s future.
This why China will eat our breakfast, lunch and dinner. Social media, smart phone are funneling our personal information back to the Chinese military govt.

Trick Wok in China gives kids real education info, the USA version is feeding crt crap and taking in intelligence on the misinformed public.
It’s part of the Cold War with our adversaries and were losing.

I don’t believe you can seriously talk about food shortages future or current without looking at the politics that is causing the issues we have today. Like the Russian Famine, the shortages we are having today are not natural shortages. The powers that be, are willing the shortages, to guide the populous into the proper mindset … subservience … control of food, and control over family, are the two best means of controlling the populace … and that is what is happening throughout the world at the present time …. add words like ‘reset’ and ‘one world government’ and it becomes clearer. Ask yourself … how are we short on eggs due to the death of chickens from the avian flu … but chicken meat is abundant and only slightly higher priced prior to the non existent inflation.

Just like the California water drought is man-made up. They have environmentalist, Unions and crackpots running the State and city govt’s. The Delta Smelt has caused a lot of the farmland to be nonexistent by diverting the irrigation water out to sea. To save a fake endangered fish species versus humans an food crops.

The activists in govt agencies drain the water reservoirs to depleted potable drinking water to save some endangers species.
Those same people screw up California so much they take their politics an go screw their new State, with high taxes.

I totally agree with foraging but be careful where you forage. Anything close to a GMO crop field is contaminated. Unless you are talking a dirt road in Timbuktu, road sides are also sprayed. A large woods might be your best choice for clean food.
As far as dehydrating, a commercial dehydrator is the best but I find my herbs retain much more flavor is dehydrated in a brown paper bag. Just put them in, not packed and shake them everyday for a couple of weeks. You’ll know when they are fully dry. store with an oxygen stabilizer.

There are poisonous look-a-like plants that are a close identity to the good foraged foods to use. Good to know both types, when future healthcare maybe limit.
There are pesticide sprays from commercial farms that can drift into those Organic farms. The groundwater table can be deteriorated by the pesticide spray too.

One cannot believe how many packets of seeds an ammo can will hold. Stay away from hybrid seeds, the resulting seeds will have you in a state of despair. ALWAYS hold back seeds for the next year or two. I’ve had years where some plants just didn’t make it and in SHTF situations they might not be available. Hand drills, taps, and buckets are great for maple syrup. Storing lentils, beans, and rice will fill a belly. Boil your meals is better when people are hungry and desperate. The delicious smells will draw them in. Nehemiah had one person working while another stood guard. Wisdom.

Plenty of sites to teach you how to save seeds.

        Here is a start.

You’ll need to google how to save biannual seeds like onions, beets, cabbage and such as they require 2 years (thus biannual) to set seeds.

One thing you will notice, they strongly suggest you save seeds from Heirloom Seeds and be careful about cross pollination.

Heirlooms were developed over decades+ to be the best they can be, and hybrids do not breed true for the next crop.

bob2, there is a book titled “Seed To Seed”, by Suzanne Ashworth. I reference it often. It is a good fail safe guide to get started on that journey. Fruit selection and conditioning is as important as drying and storing. Many of my seeds are around “tenth generation” now. It is important to start with quality heirloom, open pollinated seed. I have had very good results with seed from ‘High Mowing’ seed company, (No, I don’t have any affiliation with them other than a satisfied customer). I do add fresh seed stock from time to time to help keep the genetics strong, I don’t know if that really matters or not.

Be careful which seed companies you use!
“In 2005, Monsanto purchased 40% of the US seed companies and 20% of the global market seed companies.”
        Read this article
high Mowing seeds is on their list of GOOD companies to purchase from. But as the article says: BUYER BEWARE. Already, one company that was not Monsanto owned, has sold out: Johnny’s Selected Seeds is now Monsanto owned.

Chickens are for eggs… Rabbit is for meat. Why is it most can’t eat cute furry animals? I do. They are quiet and decently prolific. They can be raised in a back corner bedroom in a pinch. I’m not “into” guinea pigs, the south american giant breed can also be quietly raised and eaten.
I’ve been recently told, Italy eats a lot of rabbit. Raise them to 14-16 weeks, the pelts can be tanned and used for clothing. Since I believe in the coming mini Ice age, I’ll raise rabbits. Food and warmth.

Italy does indeed consume a lot rabbit. An Italian family that I got to be friends while in Vicenza served rabbit quite a bit. Rabbit can be substituted for chicken or beef in most recipes. Served stand alone, it is often prepared with orange zest to mask the gamey flavor.

Ms Paterson, the world running out of food is an old, old scam. Arrhenius, a nazi, was very loud about it. Vegetarianism is even older. We’re among a small yet rapidly growing minority who have discovered we cannot eat gluten, and now grain itself causes too many problems. For many, fruit and vegetables high in carbs are another no-no. The problem is government waste, not population and studies have shown this. Most land is best kept as pasture because tillage destroys the land. Carbon is lost when soil is exposed and that leads to droughts. Much of the land wrecked by tilling is being replaced with brush and forbs that can be grazed.

By raising cover crops no-till and grazing them, carbon content is boosted in fields. Ranchers and farmers who do that are getting record crops not seen since the land was virgin soil. Look up Gabe Brown on YouTube. He’s a rancher in North Dakota and took his land from 1.5% carbon to, in some cases, 11%. 16 inches of moisture a year, drought-proof soil.

Given advances in production, much of that in aquaponics, we, the US, can feed the world and have plenty left over.

Not true if the link to the post in my comment above is what is indeed happening. The ‘elite’ and controlling rich are trying to eliminate people by tampering with foods, making them either unable to grow food or making “food” out of other things that has no nutritive value, killing people.

You will buy seed, but they won’t produce, you will buy livestock that has bee effectually sterilized, making it impossible to continue raising livestock, if you can get any, because ‘they’ will own the patent on them.

You will buy prepared foods made form whatever they want you to, (read bugs that can be deadly to those allergic to them) only to become ill or basically a mindless nothing willing to do whatever they want. BG wants to put vacs in your food leaving you no rights to refuse.

Yes, it sounds ridiculous. I thought so too, and was about to comment so on the webpage, but read the post, and looked up the sources…I was shocked and disgusted: Deep Roots at Home

Really, WHO thinks up the titles for these posts? Many of them are completely misleading and excuse me, but stupid.
Please try to name the posts something that is a better synopsis of the actual post, and not a be-all-end-all false statement.

Well no wonder we will run out of food, when in fact they destroy our food processing plants, poison or soil, inject mRNA poison in our livestock and people believe we are running out of food cause there’s to many people. They are killing a lot of people with their poison shots. Wake up people they are doing this on purpose. If it’s not the poison they put in you, it’s the 5G killing you, the chemtrails and I could go on. To many people are not awake yet for us to stop these crazy insane people. The middle class is over unless we all stand up and stop all this bull crap.

I think it’s terrible that you are attempting to sell this food shortage BS, And not eating meat. The weather warfare being used is a big part of the problem along with the attack and destruction of all the animal barns and grain storage, and producing and distribution facilities. There is so much marginal grassland that won’t produce crops and is perfect for grazing. So much land still hasn’t been developed for cultivation. Do your homework first!
Remember the US government mandate to produce ethanol for fuel? That took a huge chunk out of the food chain. That and there is so much oil they don’t know what to do with it all, except create lies and fear mongering
