Joint pain is a common condition which can cause aches, pain, swelling and loss of mobility. This can happen anywhere in the body, but frequently affects the weight bearing joints such as the knees. Osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia, lupus and gout are just a few of the diseases that can cause pain in the bones and joints.

Osteoarthritis is one of the leading causes of joint pain in older people. It happens when the cartilage that lines the joints begins to wear away due to repeated use. Normally, this cartilage cushions the two bones of a joint, allowing them to pass over one another smoothly. When cartilage is lost, the bones can grind together, resulting in inflammation, swelling, stiffness and pain.

It is a commonly held belief that once your joints start to deteriorate, there is nothing you can do to stop the process. Treatment is usually aimed at relieving pain, reducing inflammation and slowing the course of the disease. The medications used to do this can be effective, but also carry the risk of side effects such as indigestion, stomach ulcers, liver or kidney damage and increased risk of heart attacks .

But what if there was a natural alternative? And what if this recipe was simple and cost effective to make at home? You would be crazy not to give it a try!

It is 100% natural, safe and free from side effects. So give it a try, and see how quickly your joints and bones can heal.

Pumpkin seedspumpkin seeds

Pumpkin seeds are rich in a substance called alpha linoleic acid (ALA). This is an omega 3 fatty acid which has anti-inflammatory effects, making it great for relieving all types of joint pain.

Pumpkin seeds also contain the essential minerals iron, manganese, magnesium, zinc and copper. Manganese promotes good circulation, while zinc plays an important role in protecting the bones. This makes pumpkin seeds a fantastic food for supporting healthy joints and preventing pain.

Flax seedsflax seeds

Like pumpkin seeds, flax seeds have high levels of ALA. In fact, they are one of the best plant based sources of ALA out there. They also contain copper, manganese, magnesium, phosphorus, selenium and vitamin B1. Flax seeds are a good source of fibre and also contain chemicals called polyphenols. Polyphenols have antioxidant effects and have been linked with lowering inflammation levels.

Sesame seedssesame seeds

Sesame seeds have high levels of copper, which helps to reduce inflammation, swelling and pain. They also contain calcium and zinc, vital for healthy bones as well as manganese, magnesium, phosphorus, iron, molybdenum and selenium.

Raisinsraisins

Gin-soaked raisins are a popular folk remedy for joint pain and arthritis, but is there any science behind this time-honoured tradition?

Raisins are, of course, dried grapes. Grapes are rich in many vitamins and minerals including vitamins C, K and several B vitamins. They also contain iron, zinc, sodium, potassium, magnesium and manganese, adding to their nutritional value. The skin of grapes contains resveratrol, which is a powerful antioxidant. In addition to this, when grapes are dried to make raisins, they are often treated with sulphur dioxide, a chemical which has been linked to improved joint health.

Gelatin

Gelatin is a protein which comes from skin, ligaments and bones. It is used as a thickening agent in many foods. It is rich in collagen, one of the essential building blocks of bone and cartilage. It can help to protect the joints and prevent wear and tear.

Honeyhoney

Honey has anti-inflammatory effects due to its high antioxidant content. It also contains a number of minerals and vitamins including calcium, copper, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, potassium, sodium, zinc and B vitamins. Honey acts as a sweet base for this recipe and has natural preservative properties. Here are the 23 survival uses for honey that you didn’t know about.

There is definitely much truth to this post and I plan to try this! Big pharma would prefer that you take NSAIDs and COX-2 inhibitors. Many people buy
M-S-M vs eating foods rich in Omega 3’s. I would add a diet of wild fish including Alaskan Salmon, Arctic Char and sardines!

I found that bee pollen has helped my joints. I started taking pollen from local hives to help with allergies but after a couple of weeks, I began to notice an improvement in my joints. The improvement is such that I no longer need a cane to walk. And I no longer require the expensive biologic the doctor had me on. He was even surprised by the improvement from bee pollen. I have RA, but after a year on bee pollen, my hands look normal again and the joints are not sore anymore. Oh, and the allergies are better too.

I’m wondering approximately how much bee pollen do you consume?

I take 1 1/2 to 2 teaspoons a day. I started with just a few grains for the first couple of days to make sure I wouldn’t have any reaction to the pollen. Then increased to 1/4 teaspoon per day and worked up from there, increasing the amount every few days until I got to where I am today. I’ve heard of some who take tablespoonfuls a day but that seems overkill. You might try a good health food store or even a farmer’s market for the pollen.

My apologies, yellowrose, for taking so long to answer you but I just found your comment. The pollen is in granules just like it comes from the hives. I simply measure out the amount I want to take and usually put it in a shot glass to make it easier to take. Then I take a little at a time washing it down with water. Some people like to mix theirs in smoothies or some food but I just take it straight.

I get the bee pollen from a health food store. The apiary that produces it is only a few miles from where I live so its about as local as I can get without having my own hives. You might want to start by checking with health food stores in your area, that are not part of chain stores, for local pollen and honey. If there is a farmer’s market near you, you might also find local pollen there too.

should the raisins be gin-soaked or vodka? and what if you dehydrate your own grapes which don’t use sulphur dioxide? sultana or “regular” raisins? i’m only kidding. i think. 😉

You may as well go all out, Diane. Instead of the gin or vodka, eat the raisins and wash them down with a really good cognac. I find that MUCH more satisfying. LOL! As for your knees, mine started crunching quite early in life. Crunching not good. First crunching then knee replacement. Obviously crunching means the cartilage in your knees is going? gone? Bone rubbing on bone. You have nothing to lose by trying the recipe. For me it’s too late for my knees. I now have cyborg knees. With me it’s my lower back. The cartilage seems to be degrading there. Again, nothing to lose by trying the recipe. I see the single largest amount they put in there is flax seed. I wonder if flax seed is the keystone to the whole thing. Flax seed does contain the most plant-based ALA after Chia, Kiwifruit seeds, and Perilla at 55%. Chia has 64%. Turmeric is also supposed to have anti-inflammatory properties.

or how about any squash seed instead of pumpkin. i have lots from other cultivars. don’t grow much actual pumpkin, but i might have to since my knees don’t currently have problems, but they sure crunch going up and down stairs. 🙁

@daniella – you must be from the “gimmegimme generation who thinks but doesn’t react to life much at all. Has it ever entered your empty brain cavity that a simple Google search for a “metric to standard” conversion chart takes about 11 seconds and you would have something to feast your eyes on and maybe be able to figure out without someone else’s help, eh?? Oh, and while you’re doing a search, if you don’t tire yourself out on that last one, try to find a golden spoon for yourself to spoon feed all that nourishment into the pie hole at the lower part of your face. …………. Jeez, how LAZY can one blonde get???

daniella, you posted your question before i could get the answer typed! i also was a mite annoyed at the grams vs cups thing, so i needed to convert them, despite having lived nine years in canada, ha. if i had, then all this hoopla and hubbabaloo would have been avoided altogether. sorry about that.

armin, i concur, but i can’t stand the taste of tumeric, so i’d have left it out anyway. and whadyasay, i also can be short with people (read my teenagers) who want to take shortcuts instead of doing for themselves, and doing it right the first time. however, i also have asked others for info i didn’t have, rather than look it up, as i tend to get lost on the internet when i don’t have a direct way to get said info in a timely manner. don’t know about you all, but i have spent days going on tangents and side articles instead of doing my work! deep sigh heard.

Thank you, Diane. It seems everybody missed the point of my original comment. I never said I didn’t know how to check or that I would not. The point was this:
Assuming there are 10,000 preppers that got this message and 5000 of us wanted to make the concoction, it would be nice if the “recipe” was re-posted so that 5000 of us wouldn’t have to look it up. What a time saver for everybody if the OP had just taken the time to do it before posting it the first time……don’t you think?

I was actually confused by why the recipe would include both metric measurements (the grams) and US measurements (the TBL). Don’t listen to the haters. I was one of the 5000 who had to Google the conversion.

Part of being a “prepper,” is learning how to be useful and self sufficient. People expect questions but the rude comment was correct. There are entirely to (milleniels mostly) many people out there now who are just lazy, and want other people to do everything for them. Learn how to learn or you will never be a survivor, but someone who when they run into trouble will fail on your own or be a burden on others.

    40 g equals one-third (1/3) cup
200 g (of liquid honey) equals a little over a half (1/2) cup or .60 US cups (versus imperial which is .50 or the half cup measure).
for those who make/use liquid pectin, i think gelatin (animal source) is what is needed here for its nutritional content. sounds like a reasonable recipe–i just need sesame seeds, which i like, and to hull my homegrown pumpkin seeds–or not–extra fiber doesn’t hurt (usually- ha). i’ll have to get back to this site later with my empirical results. happy new year all!

Nowadays it seems that the young crowd wants everyone else to do the work, find the answers, make the decisions.

I can’t stand those who want someone ELSE to do their thinking or clean their mess up after they throw something down on the ground or somehow fix their total disconnection with the real world!

Truth is, in all this world no matter how hard we try, nobody has found a way to this day to fix “STUPID”!

Thank you, SD. Internet cowards like that just burn my butt to no end. I just have to speak up for people that may not be able to or are too polite to fight back. This website NEEDS to be a safe space where we are allowed to ask ANY reasonable question no matter how “silly” or “stupid” it sounds to others. Everyone is at a different level. There is no such thing as a “stupid” question. Just people that are very judgemental. We have NO right to judge others unless we are willing to walk that mile in their shoes. How can we possibly know what another’s situation is? Compassion and co-operation go a long way in helping to heal the rift between people. For whatever reason some just haven’t learned compassion yet and they speak from a place of fear and anger. If it comes to the point where the unthinkable happens and a whole bunch of poop does impact the ventilator then we HAVE to learn to work together or we are ALL lost. This forum is a place for like-minded people to come together not mindless people to come apart. BTW, good choice for nickname. Love that song by “Lighthouse”. All the very best to you. God bless. 🙂

Armin, you are a very gracious person. I was thinking of writing a response to Whadya but took time to read one more response, before doing so. It was yours. You covered the subject very well. I am 81 years old with an immune disorder that was wiping me out 30 years ago, but through much research, and prayer I have conquered failing joints, fibromyalgia, vertigo and much more, making me more functional than at 50. I travel 16 mile roundtrip to do my gardening about three days a week in order to grow non-poisoned food for myself and my disabled bed-bound son. I only began the garden in late Spring 2016. It has been a tremendous benefit to both of us, but it got frozen with this recent bad weather we’ve had. I’ll just start again in spring and maybe get a greenhouse. But I managed to dry some of my magnificent Moringa, which we are using in smoothies and soup. Moringa has cured me of a weight problem brought on by hypothyroidism 30 years ago. Thyroid medication didn’t take away the hunger and loss of energy, but the Moringa did. So in the past year I’ve been eating raw Moringa daily from my garden I have lost that extra 30 pounds that I didn’t need. Excuse me, got off subject. Anyhow, I know how it feels to get weary of the computer and internet. You see how late I am at reading my emails and responding to this article. My eyes get very weary due to cataracts. I can’t have cataract surgery or any surgery because I am now toxic to anesthesia. It is tiresome to have to continually look up meanings from one article to another. I think it would be gracious for writers to include both measurements just for courtesy to us old-timers who haven’t yet learned the others. And yes, we should all consider that we don’t know the circumstances that other people are living through before making judgments. Hope Whadya has learned something from the responses here that will aid in his self-improvement. People who are easily irritated have some sort of disorder that needs help and prayer. So I’m praying he/she will get the help needed. There is something I discovered to help knee joints that some may like to check out. I tried the glucosamine years ago when I first began on the natural supplements and it helped some but not quite total relief. About 12 years ago, before I got into naturally grown foods, I discovered Dr. Theo’s Avosoy Complete for joints. It is all vegetable (does not have shells from shellfish as other glucosamine). It took a few months to feel the difference, but there is definitely a healthy difference. Buy it on the internet at http://www.drtheos.com. I buy a years supply and save money. It works that good. Also, look up Superfood Evolution Moringa on youtube and discover the wonders of Moringa. It cured my disabled son of bloody stools which was caused 17 years ago by doctors giving him strong antibiotics with his first urinary tract infection, which I asked them not to give him strong meds, but they said we must do it because otherwise we cannot cure it. Doctors do the damage with their pill prescriptions but leave the patient to deal with the damage on their own. I just discovered recently there was a class action lawsuit regarding this very antibiotic, but too late to prove one’s damages, and how can one prove that is what even caused the damage? You can buy Moringa in bulk leaves, powder capsules at health food stores.
I am fairly new to Dr. Mercola. And Wow his newsletters are powerpacked with info! Blessings to all for Great New Year! You too Whadya, if you are reading this!

Very interesting comments here. For the record, I do usually go to the conversion tables and do the homework myself. My point was, that if you are going to post the instructions to make “something” it’s nice to do so in such a way that the people who want to make whatever it is won’t have to go to a lot of extra trouble to figure out every nuance.
It seemed sort of lazy to me to list half the ingredients in grams and the rest in cups and spoons, etc.
For those who think I’m blond, lazy, etc. I’m actually old, and a real prepper. I live on a mountain with very slow internet and a very, very low amount of usage of data before I’m “throttled” for the rest of the month. I guard it carefully lest I run out. Enjoy your unlimited, high speed data, which I would love to have.
Back in the olden days when I was growing up, the idea was to do something “right” the first time. It seems like the askaprepper editor would be interested in that…….
    but apparently, I was mistaken.

Aren’t you a smarty-pants, Daniella! LOL! And I mean that only in the best possible way. You are so lucky to already be that far ahead of most of us as far as prepping is concerned. I really need to get my act together in 2018. My goal is a small parcel of land as far away from the big population centres as possible without being isolated. But with a hospital near as well as the law. I need a secure supply of fresh, clean water. Woodlot. Enough land to raise some chickens, maybe wabbits, (LOL!) have a reasonable garden. Maybe sheep or goats. I don’t know about the latter yet. But I do need a supply of fresh meat. I am a meat eater and love a good steak. As for being old it is a state of mind but unfortunately the body keeps reminding us of the passage of time. I’m almost 70 but on the inside feel like 30. The reality is not quite the same as when I was 20. Big sigh! The world situation worries me. I don’t like being paranoid or fearful but I also don’t like living under the sword of Damocles. Many of us do have unlimited internet but up here in the GWN we pay an arm and a leg for usage. I can only afford 200 gigs per month. Luckily that seems to be enough. Do wish you all the best and hope that some small amount of sense seeps into world leadership in 2018.

83 and same problem. The mind says 50, but body says NO. I still do almost everything I ever did, but slower, and with more breaks. I can still see well enough to shoot deer, but can not pick up and throw in bed of truck. 50 pound bags of dog food became 35 pounders a couple years ago. I still think people that think they are old become old. Those of us that think HELL NO I AM NOT OLD are better off. Keep going and beat me. Ha Ha.

Aw, y’all usually don’t go off on each other here. I aim to try this mixup, not everything works for everybody but this one sounds promising, I can chase it with the chopped garlic clove and lime juice I toss down every day. Many years ago I listened to some serious power lifters talk about joint pain, and they took salmon oil capsules. I tried it out and it’s really effective for osteo and also for people I’ve known with rheumatoid arthur. Natural Factors Wild Alaskan is the gold standard, 2-3 1000mg (don’t have that in American measurements) caps twice a day, give it a try.

You’re absolutely right, IvyMike. A voice of sanity in an otherwise insane world? LOL! There’s nothing better that the elite would like than for us all to fight each other to the death. Save them the trouble. So we need to learn co-operation. But there are certain etiquette or ethical standards which can not be breached. And those that attempt to do so, especially as far as anonymously attacking a woman is concerned, should be made aware of their lapse in no uncertain terms. The garlic and lime juice sounds very interesting. Garlic is very, very good for you. I’ve tried salmon oil capsules but it didn’t seem to do much good for me. Like you say not everything works for everybody. We all kinda have to find our own specific “recipe” that works the best for us. I think salmon and their related products are high in some of the omega fats. Is it omega 3’s? Yes. Just looked it up. Omega 3’s and vitamin D. Thanks, Mike.

Since becoming an herbalist I can’t go without my handy kitchen scale. There are settings on the scales for both ounces and grams. Ta da! No conversion charts anymore. Also, the scales are really inexpensive and they’re good for measuring food if you’re on a weight loss program.

I am also old, and probably a little lazy, but I finally bought one of those electronic scales that I can change between units and it works great for me.

I’d like to know what kind of gelatin is used. Does it need to be soaked in warm water, as in some recipes?

That would be like Knox gelatin, the unflavored kind. Judging from the recipe, no, it would not have to be dissolved in water first. Simply blend it in with the remaining ingredients.

Thanks, Homesteader. I wasn’t sure if the honey would be enough liquid to activate the gelatin.

You’re welcome. If the raisins are fresh, they will have some moisture too. It appears that the gelatin is more for the collagen it contains rather than for congealing the mixture.

Armin, did it ever occur to you that someone with severe osteoarthritis or Rheumatoid arthritis has painful joints in their hands? And using a computer mouse is painful? Hopefully after using this recipe for awhile the pain will be gone and using the computer will be easier for that person. You must be very young and really dumb to not have any compassion or tolerance for those less fortunate than you. Remember karma, what goes around comes around. Hope you don’t have to eat your words. And osteo and rheumatoid is not limited to the aged. Many very young people have one or both and their mobility is very limited and very painful. Examine your attitude toward other people.

Oops sorry armin-was the other dude that really showed his ignorance of others-my comment was meant for him-he sure has a lot to learn, doesn’t he? He sounds like he really has a chip on his shoulder-feel sorry for him-life is too short to put other people down-we should build up and encourage each other- I really hope he learns compassion for others-happiness is found in doing for others

Hey, Marcy! I was absolutely flabbergasted when I read your first comment. I had no idea what you were talking about as I do try my best to be polite and kind, especially on websites like this where the remaining sane people of the world come together for fellowship. LOL! And then I read your second post. The light dawned. LOL! And just for the record, no I am not very young. Almost starting my 8th decade. I’m still young and crazy on the inside though and I WILL go out kicking and screaming. Dylan Thomas; rage, rage against the dying of the light. And I will until my very last breath. LOL! I’m only a little dumb (I think? hope?) and I realize it and as I get older I am trying to become less dumb. LOL! Well; unfortunately, Marcy in any group of people there will always be that (those) one or two jerks. It’s just a statistical reality. But you also can’t judge THAT person. We don’t have the right. You don’t know THEIR situation. The only reason I said something about that person was because he attacked another just for asking a simple question and then proceeded to unilaterally trash and judge that person into the ground. I have a VERY strong sense of honour and justice and was absolutely outraged that someone could be so unnecessarily cruel to a stranger. So I just couldn’t keep my big trap shut. But we don’t know that person’s situation. They may just have lost someone very dear to them. They may be in constant pain. They may just have found out they have only months to live. There could be a million things that are causing them to act that way. We just don’t know. We also need to have compassion for this type of person because they’re obviously hurting. They may also just be a miserable spiteful hateful person and they’ve come by it naturally. In that case we need to have MORE compassion for them because they have a longer journey ahead of them than others but that doesn’t mean we should stop trying to teach them. Part of our job “down here” is to try and help and teach others as much as we can. But just as an errant child sometimes DOES deserve a smack on the behind so people like this need to be reminded, sometimes quite sharply, that their current behavior is not appropriate and cannot be tolerated. Then it IS our duty to speak up. Hopefully they CAN listen and learn. No one is beyond hope. And whether you believe me or not I agree with your very last statement. And I never fully realized it until I lost MY own mother. The greatest happiness IS found in doing for others. My personal definition of the perfect relationship is one where each person does for the other first so that neither has to do for themselves and each is taken care. Each is totally cared for and loved by the other. We ARE here to love and care for each other but some just haven’t come to realize that yet. And eventually we will all learn unconditional love. That is the end goal for us all. And then we only need come back “here” if we so choose. Appreciate your comments, Marcy. Hope you have a great year!

    Hello,

Just to say it didn’t work for me, mixed it up to the letter took it as prescribed, not saying it won’t work for someone else though, like all natural medicines you have to find the right fit for your body… its a science. 🙂

    I would like to ask….
I have been using this recipe and it did seem to start to help. I had to stop because it seemed to cause my gall bladder to start bothering me. I have a recipe that I have used for years which is 2 tablespoons of olive oil and 2 tablespoons of lemon juice that has saved me from surgery. But when it begin to hurt even my “recipe” didn’t seem to help. Has anyone else had this problem and how did you help it so that you could continue to take the recipe for arthritis?

Often called vegetarian gelatin, agar, which comes from algae, will congeal liquids just like gelatin, but I don’t know if agar has anything like the collagen that is in gelatin. It’s the collagen that the body needs to help repair certain tissues around the joints and throughout the body, rebuild nails, and help the skin remain wrinkle free. Also, other than certain nutrients in the raisins that the body needs and can be found in other sources, you may be able to leave them out altogether since sugar is a problem.

    Armin,
Thank you very much for your comments. I’m glad there are still decent people out there. I recently joined this site and have been “catching” up on some of the older posts and came across this posting. I have to tell you that person was totally insensitive. I have been teaching my older (13,10) grand kids how to become more self sufficient, the younger ones are just starting to be interested. I have to relate something that happened to my grand daughter. She went on another site a couple of years ago, after googling the subject, and asked a question. I’ll tell you the vitriol and nasty comments that at the time the 11 year old got was horrendous. SO to that person you don’t know who is asking the questions so if you cannot be nice don’t bother to answer or comment on the “lazy” millennials or gimme gimme people. she was so upset that she was crying. All she wanted to do was to learn something as a surprise for her grandma. I sincerely hope that in the future, you think before you shoot your mouth off and will be kinder the next time you post.

For those of you who have MACs, the dashboard app has a conversion table. It coverts miles to km; pounds to kg, ounces to whatever a portion of a kg is, etc. I find it especially helpful when writing to my Japanese friends who are unfamiliar with U.S. measurements. I know a few of the formulae for conversion, but it is so much easier to go to dashboard and badda bing badda boom there is the answer. Computer is great but it does make us lazier (and dumber????)

I was scheduled for left hip replacement surgery 21/2 years ago but had a heart attack just before my appointment date. By the time I was able to have surgery, my pelvic area had become so deformed that I decided not to risk the surgery and chose life in a wheel chair instead. I had lost most of the cartilage in my knees as well.
For 2 1/2 years I have been unable to lift my left leg or put any weight the ibuprofen I eeded for the pain, I have been eating at least 1/4 – 1/2 cup of pumpkin seeds a day, Now, I am almost totally pain free, am able to stand unassisted and walk holding on! I checked this webstie because I wanted to know if this amazing change could have come from the pumpkin seeds. I think it must have. I am 87 years old.
