Concealed Carry Mistakes You Have To Avoid At All Costs

Concealed Carry Mistakes You Have To Avoid At All Costs

In the last 2 years, we have seen a massive attack on the police and the after-effects of dismantling the very organizations that protect the innocent from criminals.

In my life, I have never seen criminals more emboldened. What is most surprising is that our leaders have no plans to stop the crime.

In 2020 gun ownership skyrocketed amongst women and African Americans to historic levels. Many Americans have a concealed weapons permit.

They are carrying firearms because they are scared. However, they might be making some serious mistakes.

Let’s have a look at the top 3 mistakes gun owners make and some other concealed carry mistakes you have to avoid.

You Don’t Carry Your Gun

Concealed Carry Mistakes You Have To Avoid At All CostsIt might sound silly, but I can guarantee you that it happens more than you think.

Many people invest the time and money to secure a concealed carry permit.

They invest in a new firearm and a holster and leave the whole setup at home.

Related: Concealed Carry – Why Do You Need One

The most important thing you can do after you get your concealed carry permit is to carry your gun all the time.

Carry it on your person and get a good bag with an easy access pocket for your firearm. This will make carrying your gun everywhere you go easier and more convenient.

You Don’t Know How To Use Your Gun

Another huge mistake that new concealed carry permit holders make is they are carrying a gun they have no idea how to use.

Now, most trainings required to get a concealed carry permit will teach you the basics, but this won’t be enough in a survival situation.

Do you know how to use your gun beyond just shooting a few rounds down range?

How will you reload your weapon when you use it in a self defense situation? What will you do if your gun gets jammed? How do you clean your weapon?

The truth is most people don’t know how to care for or even use their gun for all it is capable of.

You Don’t Know When You Can Use Your Gun

Concealed Carry Mistakes You Have To Avoid At All CostsFrom a legal standpoint there is no greater mistake you can make then kill someone using your gun in a situation that then makes YOU the criminal.

When you pull your firearm in a self defense situation, you need to know exactly when you are permitted to use your firearm.

This changes from state to state. So, you need to know your local self defense laws if you are going to carry a firearm. Otherwise, you might wind up in jail.

⇒ Do You Know Why You Should Never Put A Tall Fence Around Your House?

Here are some other concealed carry mistakes you have to avoid.

Carrying In A Bad Holster

A bad holster makes carrying your gun both dangerous and uncomfortable.

If your gun falls out of your holster, then everyone is uncomfortable. It is also a failure to secure your equipment properly.

A quality holster will be designed to fit your weapon snug, keep it in place throughout your day and be easy to remove your weapon from, should you need to do so in a hurry. Get a good holster.

Carrying With A Bad Belt

There is a reason for the gun belt market. Guns are heavy for the average belt.

A sagging belt or sagging pants with your firearm attached to them is just terrible, awful. Nothing is going well if this is how you carry a weapon.

Concealed Carry Mistakes You Have To Avoid At All CostsAll sorts of bad things can happen:

  • Your pants are gonna come down
  • Your belt is going to give too much, and you won’t be able to pull your gun.
  • Your gun is going to fall out of the holster, or the holster will come off the belt itself.

Wearing The Wrong Clothes

There are clothes that make getting to your gun easy and clothes that make it nearly impossible.

There are also tight clothes that tell everyone around you that you are carrying a firearm. If they can see the imprint of your gun through your clothes this is called printing and is not a great tactic.

Related: 10 Deadly Mistakes That New Gun Owners Make

You should also wear clothes that give easy access to your gun no matter where you carry it. Tight outer layers might restrict that access. The quicker and easier you can get to your gun the safer you will be.

Not Practicing Consistently

Concealed Carry Mistakes You Have To Avoid At All CostsShooting your gun once a year is not enough. Handling and shooting your gun once a month is not enough.

Even if you cannot afford the range time, you can practice dry fire at home. This is a method of emptying the firearm of ammunition and simple aiming and pulling the trigger.

You’ll be surprised by what you learn about your firearm with some dry fire practice.

Being Dangerously Unaware

Let’s say you hit the range a couple time a week, you are outfitted with all the best guns, gear, and training. You carry your weapon everyday but while you are out in public you spend all your time staring down at your phone.

Situational awareness is so important today. Its much more important for someone who is carrying a concealed weapon. You need to be several steps ahead of what is going on.

You need to make a decision about using deadly force and the worst way to make that decision is to look up from your phone in surprise. Pay attention!

Not Understanding Cover And Concealment

It’s not always a guarantee but if you shoot at someone there is a chance they shoot back. The expression is, ‘bullets go both ways,’ and I think its an important lesson.

Concealed Carry Mistakes You Have To Avoid At All Costs

If you are hiding from a bad guy, then concealment will do just fine. You use concealment to remain hidden.

If you are trying to stop bullets, then you need to get behind cover.

Cover is thick, hard material like brick or cinderblock that can stop bullets.

Related: How To Make Bulletproof Body Armor Plate

You have to know the difference because one will keep you safe from being seen and the other will keep you safe from getting shot and that is a big difference.

Not Planning

You probably spend most of your time in a few places. Have you ever walked through what might happen if an active shooter or other violent crime put you and the people you love at risk in one of these places.

Do you have a plan? What would you do in a situation like this? Where is the best place to be? Where is the cover in the location?

I think it really helps to visualize and plan the steps you will take should a shorter show up. When do you fire and when do you run? Walking through these situations and creating a plan can make all the difference should a situation like this happen.

Just a few days ago a young man hopped up into a cart at Target and started ranting. He had a backpack with him. He was talking about capitalism, and he was about 10 yards from me. That situation set off a lot of alarms in my head. Before he started talking, I was already moving into cover and watching him very carefully.

Turned out to be nothing but a young kid doing something “crazy” in a Target. Still, you can melt under the pressure of the situation and make a bad decision if you have not prepared and plan to conceal carry responsibly.

I started carrying a firearm concealed after the 2017 London Bridge attacks in the UK. I have never felt better. Carrying a firearm sheers off a level of anxiety because I know I can protect myself and my family in the worst case scenario.

When done effectively, carrying a firearm becomes something I think the mass of Americans should do. If they can avoid the mistakes, we discussed we could have an empowered nation of people who would likely deter much of the crime we are seeing in our major cities.

I prefer to open carry myself, I carry a glock 20 with two spare mags. The article had some rather good points and people should folllow the advise with getting a decent belt (30 bucks ) and a good holster isn’t going to cost you a fortune. Blackhawk Serpa holsters are 20 to 30 bucks new.

I am a retired nurse who just bought her first gun and knew NOTHING. I promptly hired an instructor at the local range who has taught me the basics. I am going biweekly for further training in field stripping, cleaning and what training is needed for a carry license…..even though I live in a Constitutional carry state. They have a female gun club for women that I will join when I am ready to branch out and practice on my own.
I have already learned a lot! I am glad I did this!

Open carry is fine for uniformed police, but even cops carry concealed when off duty. It is better for criminals to NOT know if I am armed. Besides, open carriers draw criminals like a candle draws moths. They can have you disarmed and shot with your own firearm quicker than a cat can lick it’s a…well, you know.

Of course it depends on the State you live in whether you can Open or CC. I, for one, would prefer to OC at times, but my State only allows CC.

Open carry is bad practice! You are preparing for a life or death situation in your future that you know NOTHING about. The bad guy knows EVERYTHING, because he gets to choose when, where, how, etc. he will make his move. The only thing he doesn’t know is the level to which you are armed. If you tell him that, he now knows everything. It’s true that open carry will push most bad guys off to strike somewhere else, but those are the ones that don’t want to have a shooting situation. If you happen to cross paths with someone that is serious or doesn’t care, he’ll get you out of the way 1st… in the back. That’s the person I carry for… concealed.

Bob- you are “guessing” when proclaiming “The bad guy knows everything” !. Yes, he gets to decide WHEN and WHERE he acts, but he is UNAWARE of the reaction taken by others until it actually OCURRS !! Fact is, the bad guy/girl most likely has “anticipatory fog”, is VERY nervous, and can be “picked out of the crowd”. That gives the “good guy” the advantage, if the ahole is carefully watched.

Insurance is a great scam with the law makers. It’s time to reverse that, of the laws that protect the poor jerk criminals. Who go through the modern revolving door current DA legal system. That favors criminals and jailing the citizen who defends himself going to jail.
Then we can rid the State concealed carry restrictions to open carry an loaded. Make the criminals think twice about their actions.
The criminals are totally responsible for their actions, so their family members can’t sue in court. The right to defend ones self is the American way, not the jelly-belly way to give in.

I prefer not to have insurance because I know of a case where the prosecution used that against the person. They claimed “pre-meditation,” because the shooter thought about shooting in advance by getting the insurance.

    This article is good.
There is something everyone really needs to think about.
Here is the scenario. Your in a mall store such as wally world. You hear gunshots and see the the person with a gun you think is the shooter. What should you do?
You have only seconds to make your mind up.
First thing I say is “DO NOTHING” until you know for sure that person is the enemy shooter and not someone like you that is defending. The only way to know for sure is if you have seen that person shoot someone that is unarmed.
Now I will hear all kinds of things about this as to you have to shoot first, others will be killed or die if you don’t.
Well that may be true. But if your not the target then take your time and make sure of who is who and doing what. If you kill someone that is actually defending such as you would be doing, if it were a plains clothes policeman/security guard then you will be tried, convicted and have on your conscience killing an inocent person.
So unless you are the target take your time and make sure who is who and who the bad shooter is. There is no second guessing.

Frosty you are correct for your scenario. But I had no family listed nor did I have you as the target. For your scenerio. Yes if you have family to protect then move them to a secure location but do not seek to engage the target unless he tries to engage you. You have a family to protect and leaving them to go hunt the shooter is leaving them open to attack.
What I am trying to say is if your not the target then take your time because a wrong decision will have serious consequences. See your not the police so you don’t have the protection they have or should have( now days the police are tried everytime they use their gun). The police see some one with a gun out then they should call out drop it or something to make sure your a bad guy but they may not have that luxury in an active shooter situation. SO never draw your weapon unless you are going to use it as soon as it comes out of the holster.

Raven the “Charlie Foxtrot” X-spurt, once again you prove what an ignorant fool you are. One of the most basic concepts of using firearms is to always positively identify your target. This is why a lot of idiots like you shoot livestock and other hunters while out “hunting”, they do not maintain control and assess that what they are going to shoot is actually a valid target. Because of your arrogant “know it all” attitude, you endanger everyone around you, including your own family.

AS to open carry or concealed carry that is up to the individual because there is drawvbacks to both.
First of it takes a second or two longer to draw from concealed carry.
Then there is always the possibility of the clothing hiding your weapon hanging on it and causing you to have to clear it away to draw.
Then for open carry there is the bad guys knows your armed. People tend to watch you closer and you have to remain concious of the gun and everything around you 100% of the time to prevent someone from taking it.

For myself I choose open carry unless I am wearing a coat.
Why because I remain aware of who, and what is around me about 80% of the time.
Why 80% well no one is 100% and your awareness is decreased when your looking at some item, speaking with a clerk or at checkout. There is no way around this for one person now if they are two or more then you can let the others do some of the work.

The concealed and open carry are fine, but as we age our reflexes degrade. Had an example of a guy showing me how fast a knife can be thrown at you before you can draw. So we also need to have backups an some extra self defense tactics when we are at a disadvantage. To draw a gun to defend, it depends on our physical, age and reflexes. Depending on the situation.
My understanding with open carry, is the gun loaded or unloaded than concealed? So if we have to load the gun in open carry that also adds to the reaction timing.

As said we would not have stupid gun laws, if “Scaredy Cats” would at least attempt to fire a pistol or rifle a couple of times at a gun range. They may change their mind. Those anti-gunners soon learn after the fact of getting attacked by a criminal or dirt-bag that maybe a gun is not a bad thing to have.
God help the Marines to not quit using Sir or Ma’am, in their training. The Spec-Ops better not go woke. The Navy, Air Force and Army have caved to the woke CRT Nazi’s.

Bite Me administration is weakening, hollowing-out our once strong military to be wimps. We want a military that will kill the enemy, not BOHICA.
If God or Jesus were here today they would strap on a gun for the Home of the Brave.

The SAD part is i am sure people like yourself will disagree and think we need common sense gun laws on everything and wonder why it never ends.

All Republican Presidents in the last 50 years have been Awful for Gun rights. Trump, Reagan both Bush’s alll supported the AWB and pushed gun control down our throats. Meanwhile your types cheer gleefully because the guy you voted for did it.

I agree about the guns laws and have asked this many times. We had laws against felons owning or having guns since way back. Now why do we need anymore?
As to owing a machine gun I do not think owning one should against the law or having a silencer. But I do think you should not carry a full automatic around. Carring a standard semi is good enough. But having one in case of a LAWKI event coming to an end is justifiable. But back in the 1934 president Roosevelt put an end to owning machine guns unless you have them super registered and that means years of paper work etc. He was the start of anti gun.

Actually, America was safer before the 1968 gun control act. Fully automatic firearms were used by criminals and police. But, the general public didn’t want or need these guns. Having a fully automatic machine gun, tank or artillery piece is not against the law, just have to pay the government a chunk of change to have it. That is “infringement” so we live with it because folks don’t think they need it or want to pay the price. When I was a kid we all had guns and fishing poles of our own and cared for them. Felons have lost the right to have a firearm legally. However, when I was a cop, lots of felons had guns – laws don’t apply to them because it would violate their right against self-incrimination. Society has changed and how children are raised has changed drastically. Coddling children and criminals only aggrivates the situation and makes for deranged killers. If you wish, I could go on and on explaining what’s wrong with our society; but it’s not an inanimate thing like a firearm, it’s people and how afraid they are about nearly everything.

While I agree with most everything this article says – I would add : Typically getting your Permit (while Good) will NOT Prepare you for a “Real Gun Fight”. In my state you can actually get a permit “On Line” with No Real Training at all.
Me ? – State and DHS Certified Instr. & Permit Instr, 10yr Combat Competition Shooter. Survived 3 “Real Gun Fights”. While I agree with most everything the article says – Typically your Permit (While Good) will NOT Prepare You for a “Real Gun Fight”.
If you are going to “Carry” in Public, I strongly recommend you get some training in “Actually Shooting/Defending in Public”. There is A “LOT” more to it than most think (Mentally and Physically). Being “Shot AT” is “Really Scary”. Most have not really thought about what it is Really going to take. You need to be Well Trained and Practiced in “Combat Shooting” to the point you are operating on Auto Pilot, you don’t want any Stray-Shots from YOU. And “Mentally” (Ahead of time) “Make friends with Fear, Pain, Death” ie “No Fear”. Your spot on!
Back in the day, there were target shooting clubs in High Schools. No one used a gun, the guys used fist fights to settle things.
The first step back then was NRA Hunter Safety classes to start. Then you could go on to advanced gun skills or the military or law enforcement for other training.
The current mindset to gun combat is skewed by Hollyweed movies and TV of good and bad dudes firing guns.
The good gun combat classes are far and few, expensive to take. Fly, hotel, class, take off work time.
The question is what do you want a gun for, the purpose, are you able to train to keep up those skills learned?
What are the member’s solutions to the self defense gun combat, that everyone can afford? Are there certain gun tactics older folks should learn as they age in life?

Look into IDPA – INTL Defensive Pistol Assoc. There are clubs all over the US (Some in most every state) and World actually that sponsor IDPA Matches. Call the Match Director ask him how you can learn. Go watch a match. Really good training for the real thing – ie A real gun Fight. There are rankings for levels of skill – Unclassified, Novice, Marksman, and up. You can shoot but don’t have to actually “Compete” – that is what “I” do. I dont care about rankings. Most People are very accommodating and willing to help you get started. Stages are designed to simulate Real Attacks you may experience. And They will show you how to shoot “Defensively” ie How to shoot and Not Get Shot.

I really appreciate that insight! My wife and I are lucky enough to have a friend who has also survived gun fights! We get some training in alot of aspects of what can happen in a gunfight. Otherwise, we couldn’t afford someone with his expertise. Even though we’re all over 60, we get training in martial arts, medical, bushcraft, foraging, firearms and more! It’s a weekly or bi-weekly event and is basically just friends getting together and sharing knowledge and experience! We’re extremely grateful!

The 1968 gun control act fact or fantasy, because of the JFK shooting was an early step to less freedom. Recently there were several JFK files given out to the public. Still several thousand files remain classified. Which or how many of the alphabet agencies foreign and domestic participated during that era? Who are they still protecting?

Is there a dot connection of the 1968 gun control act to the current Bite Me administration’s demonizing the AR? Why is the legacy news outlets and activists harping on the AR?

The supposedly majority of the mass shooter’s preferred weapon is the AR. Is the restricting of the AR, just another roundabout attempt to curb honest citizens from owning guns?

Why should we listen to the FBI, CIA law enforcement to what they view is right. Currently the alleged agencies have manipulated the past presidential elections by using social media.
Why are the new 86K IRS agents Bite Me wants, being trained with guns to kill taxpayers? Why does the public see ammo shortages, what agency is buying all the ammo?
If Bite Me is for (corrupt) law and order, Bunter should be tried and go to prison. For buying a gun, lying on fed gun form for no drug use and ditching his gun in the trash.
When we see that happening maybe we will listen, take them seriously.

In the current political world of Bite Me, Poolsi, Shumber and other elites. If they could do gun confiscation on citizens. The concealed carry permit is the perfect tool. Got your information, fingerprints and type of gun.
It’s a shame it use to be a government should be scared of it’s citizens. Then the other way around as we see it today with all the BS restricted gun laws.

In a semi perfect world the old guns laws need to be removed from the law books. Replaced with the Golden Rule type, but that’s just pie in the sky dreaming in modern society. Many believe in wind mills and unicorns, fantasy thinking. Until they become a victim. Realty hurts sometimes:)

Every overbearing dictatorship govt, always has to deny their citizens of guns to rule effectively. Our current govt, is no different with the clowns in charge. Today those in charge can and will confiscate weapons. As the younger generations are manipulated with social media, like Trick Tack. The CRT conversation and gender bender BS has distracted Americans. To their true nature of freedom loving patriots.

Yes gun confiscation can happen in our lifetimes if not checkmated. It’s our decision what happens next. Elections do have consequences, look at what we have now, DC Swamp mess.

Yeah your right. The police gun buy back programs are another way to disarm. They do it by cash incentives taking guns and destroying them.
Or as in alleged JOEBAMA’s administration of “Fast and Furious” giving weapons to the cartels. Do those alleged buy back weapons really get destroyed, maybe the guns are sold for profit.
The govt has Fibbed to the public before for decades about such things they do.

I read over a dozen comments and I couldn’t bring myself to read any more… So, someone may have already pointed out that a criminal is always going to pick an easy target. They’ll move on to someone else easier or maybe even come back another time should they come across an armed individual who’s not carrying concealed. Carry however you like; open/CC. The most important factor is your brain! Situational awareness is paramount. It’s vital that you look everyone directly in the eye because the eyes give an abundance of information. How you present yourself is also very important. The criminal’s greatest fear is failure. It’s also important to point out that drug abusers and crazy people intent on mayhem and destruction are unpredictable, which is why CC is probably your best option. Most people who CC print or give away the fact that they’re carrying a firearm on their person. Arguing over which option is best is ridiculous. Just carry everywhere and use your brain. If you feel uncomfortable in a situation, move on—get away for the situation. Listen to your gut instincts. Goog luck!

Yes, situation awareness is important for the CC person.
The other crowd, like walkers, joggers especially alone in a park or on a dim light street in certain locations and evening hours. Are asking for trouble these days. Some people have the mindset they can do want they want, narcissism.

Commonsense does not enter their thought pattern to being aware. They put on headphones listen to music. Especially smartphone users focusing on the screen oblivious to the external. I don’t have sympathy for them causing their own demise.
A lot of people place themselves in careless positions expecting help. Sometimes the rescuer is the criminal taking advantage of the situation.

Well, I carry concealed. I don’t even know where I can or can not carry open. However, I do NOT “hide” the fact that I am carrying. Quite the contrary. The more of us that carry and educate the masses (non gunners especially) about the purpose and reasons for responsible firearms operation, the better. I’m proud to be able to state that I am a law abiding citizen which gives me the RIGHT to carry a weapon for my protection as well as theirs. The one adage that most of the modern world has forgotten, is still true and will ALWAYS be true; “when you outlaw guns, only outlaws will have guns”. Criminals don’t go to the local sporting goods store to get their guns! ‘Nuff said.

Lastly. Mike Oxlong. You asked, “Tell me why should a felon loose his rights forever?”
I’ll tell you why. It’s a no brainer. BECAUSE HE MADE BAD CHOICES IN LIFE! No criminal that I have known about was ever FORCED to commit that crime. Yes, Mike. For LIFE. It’s just the same as the way we continually release felons only to see them commit again. Ridiculous. Do the crime, do the time! Commit a crime against humanity and you should not only loose ALL of your rights, but you should also be justly held accountable and imprisoned accordingly.

I am so sick and tired of this “ohhh… he needs help, he’s ‘disadvantaged’ “. Give me a break! Stop blaming others for what you do!

I’m done. Sorry, it just gets my goat!

Oooh so you do know the avg person commits 3 felonies a day and never know they did it. So you’re quick to judge someone who committed tax fraud and thinks they should never carry a again. Great boomer thinking their buddy. I am surely your narrowed minded self is thrilled with the irs expansion then. Gee I wonder why they did that.

I am confused where it states shall not infringe unless they’ve been charged with a felony. ..

Did any of you hear the account of a young guy who stopped a crazy shooter in a mall or grocery after the rifle carrying shooter fired just a few times? The young CC holder/hero fired 10 rounds striking and incapacitating the shooter 8 times. The mainstream news reported it for about a day and a half, THEN the story vanished as if it never happened. It was in mid-2022.

Carry two … with extra mags for both. Once and done likely won’t happen, and a wounded arm can ruin the single side option. Either way, I always bring a knife, so the other guy can imagine they have a chance. LOL

I am more afraid of citizens carrying guns than active shooters. Trained combatants miss their target 80% of the time under stressful conditions. Do you think you are going to take out an active shooter like Matt Dillon? If you say yes, you have watched too many westerns. These are make-believe and so are your intentions.

If they are missing their target 80% of the time then they are not trained. Your statistics are fictional. Also, Matt Dillon is a fictional sheriff in a fictional western and he would not be the fictional active shooter. I don’t think it is important, and actually dangerous, to sit around thinking of a plan for every situation. Or worse, training for certain situations. It is like fighting hand to hand. Be it an eastern martial art or street fighting. If you planned for a situation and have developed muscle and mind memory for that you are now at a disadvantage. You should train hard at firing positions, finding suitable cover, marksmanship, safety and decision making. If you believe a certain incident is going to play out to your plan, you will always be wrong.

Practice weak hand shooting. You may/will need it.

Practice reloading one handed. Practice chambering a round one handed.

What are you going to do if you get shot and your strong hand is disabled?

Practice shooting in every position, standing, kneeling, sitting, and prone.

When you are drawing your gun in the standing position the first shot needs to happen when your gun clears the holster in a horizontal position. Follow through by stepping back as you raise your gun to eye level. Then take your second shot if needed. This tactic works because in a shoot situation the bad guy is going to be close to you, 10 feet or possibly less. If the aggressor is 40-50 feet away you need to be leaving the area. If you start shooting at someone 50 feet away you will fail the 5 elements of self defense and find yourself in a jail cell awaiting trial.

Situational awareness is critical. See the threat before it is in your face. Look at what is behind the threat. Are there bystanders behind him? You are responsible for their welfare and will be held liable if a stray bullet hits one of them. Use ammo that will not over penetrate. What enters the bad guy stays in the bad guy.

The 5 Elements of Self Defense
Innocence(are you the victim), Imminence(your belief that the attack is imminent), Reasonableness(your Belief the attack will cause you death or serious bodily injury), Avoidance(can you escape), Proportionality(Did you use the least force necessary to stop the attack)
