I would only place the steel plates at both sides of the door way that would cover your body width and as high as you stand.
For prepping think of ballistics as everything and anything moving at high speed. This would include shrapnel and debris like in tornadoes and hurricanes, If you live in the Midwest is is prudent to construct a home or a section of a home to withstand high velocity debris penetration, and you do not sound weird when you sat it that way. I cannot afford steel plating, steel sheets, ballistic drywall, nor Kevlar wraps for my home and structures. I can afford plywood under siding, poured concrete were appropriate, brick facades, local sourced stone for construction, mortar filled cement blocks, etc. Old technologies such as solid wood functional, lockable, and attractive shutters protect from both debris and human intrusion (have since pioneer days) along with solid core doors.
