Hoarding These Items Might Get You Arrested

Hoarding These Items Might Get You Arrested

It is risky not to be on the alert at all times. You don’t want to take chances on your security, protection, and welfare. An effective way to protect yourself is by stockpiling survival items.

Stockpiling these items will get you safe in any unforeseen dangerous events and circumstances. The fire extinguisher can be the only item you would need to prevent your house from getting ablaze in a fire incidence. You can use your survival knife as a self-defense weapon.

Related: How To Correctly Choose Your Survival Knife

Also, if the circumstance demands erecting a shelter (usually temporary), you can use your knife to trim limbs. In cases of blackouts, your headlamp would provide you with illumination. I can go on and on in pointing out the importance of stockpiling survival items.

But hey, that is not just all to it! You can be arrested for hoarding some items.

Brass Knuckles

Hoarding These Items Might Get You ArrestedThis is a quite dangerous metallic object you can put on your fingers in a combat. It is helpful in self-defense.

Although there is no federal law expressly prohibiting possession of brass knuckles, some states treat this item as a concealed weapon and you are not allowed to possess it.

These states include New York, Colorado, New Jersey, Vermont, etc. Also, some districts like the District of Columbia forbid you from possessing this item. If at all you want to have this item, you must obtain a license for that.

Note that even in states like Iowa, Ohio, where knuckles are not expressly prohibited, you may be charged with felony when you use it in a violent crime.

Knives

Generally, you are allowed to possess or keep knives that are less than 2-3 inches. However, you are not permitted to possess some types of knives.

Different states have different regulations on the types of knives you cannot keep.

Hoarding These Items Might Get You Arrested

In Texas, you cannot use a knife with a blade that is above 5½ inches.

Whereas in California, you are prohibited from keeping belt knives, air gauge knives, ballistic knives, butterfly knives, dirks, stilettos, knives over 2 inches in length, and knives you cannot detect with metal detectors.

In Illinois and Florida, you cannot keep ballistic knives. In New York, you cannot keep metal knuckle knives, throwing stars, cane swords, and ballistic knives.

Related: If You Don’t Have These 9 Self-Defense Items, You Are Not Really Prepared

In Alabama, you are not permitted to have concealed bowie-like knives. Also, in Hawaii, butterfly knives and switchblades are illegal.

Explosives

Under both federal and state laws, it it illegal to manufacture, distribute or receive explosive materials without a license.

Hoarding These Items Might Get You Arrested

According to the Federal Explosives Act of 1917, possession of explosives is prohibited.

If you are looking at getting explosive materials in your survival items, you would have to ditch that idea.

Otherwise, you may be arrested.

Tasers

This is an electroshock weapon you can use to incapacitate a violent attacker. It has two small darts that can penetrate and cause electric shock on a targeted person.

In New York, Hawaii, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island, you are not permitted to possess or use a taser.

However, in Connecticut, you can carry this item along with you, either in person or in a car. In Illinois, you must obtain a Firearm owner’s identification card before you can possess a taser.

Switchblades

According to the Federal Switchblade Act 1958, it is illegal to use switchblades. Some states also forbid you from possessing or using this item.

switchblade

These states include Hawaii, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, Washington, Delaware, etc.

There are punishments if you flout this law. For example, in Minnesota, owning a switchblade is a misdemeanor crime with a penalty of 90 days or 1-year imprisonment and fines.

Large Capacity Magazines

This is a type of magazine with a high number of ammunition rounds. It enables you to shoot repeatedly without reloading the rifle.

Some states like Hawaii, Connecticut, California, Colorado, New Jersey, Massachusetts, New York, Maryland, and Vermont have legislations that prohibit you from having large-capacity magazines.

Hoarding These Items Might Get You Arrested

Under the Colorado Revised Statutes 18-12-302, the maximum permissible magazine capacity is 15.

In Hawaii, Connecticut, Maryland, etc., the maximum is 10 rounds.

Using large-capacity magazines attracts punishments.

In Colorado, this attracts 12-18 months imprisonment and or $1,000 to $10,000 fine. In 2021, the Ninth Circuit upheld California’s penal code 32310 which forbids possession of large-capacity magazines.

Traps

States like New Jersey, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Florida, Colorado, Arizona, California, and Washington have restrictions on trapping.

In New Jersey, it is illegal to possess a steel-jaw leghold trap. In Florida, you cannot possess or use steel leg-hold, body-grip, and dog-proof raccoon traps.

⇒ DIY Automatic Backyard Traps And Alarms Against Looters And Intruders

If at all you need traps, you must obtain the necessary permit from the Food and Wildlife Conservation.

Bullets

bullets

There are variations of permitted bullets across all states. States like California and Connecticut do not allow you to possess ‘large caliber’ ammunition.

In Florida, it is illegal to possess or use Dragon’s breath bullet. The Dragon’s breath can shoot out sparks and flames of over 100 feet.

In Florida, California, and Illinois, you are not permitted to possess flechette bullets. Be sure to check out if the type of bullets you are getting is permitted in your state.

Assault Rifles

Until 2004, assault rifle was banned at the federal level under the Public Safety and Recreational Firearms Use Protection Act 1994. However, it is still illegal to possess or use an assault rifle in some states.

rifle

These states are Maryland, Massachusetts, Hawaii, California, Connecticut, New York, and New Jersey.

If you plan to include an assault rifle in your survival item and it is prohibited in your state law, you need to ditch that right away.

Under the Maryland code of criminal law, a first offender here is liable to imprisonment for a minimum period of five years and a maximum of twenty years.

A second or subsequent offender is liable to imprisonment for a mandatory minimum of ten years with a maximum of 20 years.

Silencers

silencer

If you are looking at getting a silencer to your survival items, you need to check if it is permitted in your state.

Some states such as Illinois, Massachusetts, New York, California, New Jersey, Rhode Island, and District of Columbia criminalize the possession of silencers.

Under the California’s penal code 33310, it is a criminal offense to possess a silencer. The punishment is up to 3 years imprisonment.

You don’t want to be arrested by the cops for possessing what is illegal to possess. And yes, ignorance is not an excuse here. That’s pretty much why I have taken you through some of the items that are illegal for you to hoard.

Note that there may be variations across different states and districts. Just be sure you are not breaking the laws of the place where you are resident.

The irony is that the ones who make these silly rules against having all these things are the ones that carry them, use them freely, and train themselves extensively in their use, as if they have some special right above me. They do. They’re called the enemy and criminals. Why would anyone trust in or listen to or obey the enemy, unless they have their gun or broken whiskey bottle at your head or throat.

I don’t advocate war or any related crime, but I sure in hell don’t support these false rulers whose agenda is not for my, or our, well-being, no matter what costume they wear, or what title they dress themselves with.

Underneath these empty trappings is just a man who has no more rights to God’s earth and seas as I do. To allow ourselves to think otherwise is a crime.

If you think you need it, buy it or make it, then hide it away and never boast or speak about it. When TSHTF, then there is no-one to tell you what is illegal, or not. The cops will be home defending their own families, not ganging up on supposed illegal items that the cops probably have anyway. Have kids? Train them in the four monkeys, hear, speak, say, or see “no evil”. Also remember this: “different is dead”, when it all falls apart, you have to look, smell, and be as raggedy as anyone else. Freshly showered, clean, and a full belly will get people to wondering about you, follow you home, spy on you, then kill you and enslave your family and use YOUR stuff up. Never depend upon the supposed “goodness of civil people” because it will not be there unless you are extremely lucky.

Look at from another perspective what others don’t know doesn’t hurt you. As for having certain items you put those in your hidden stash. When the SHTF laws will not matter. A government cannot enforce laws when 90% of people are dead and the only moral code is what you can enforce by any means necessary. As for confiscation how are you going to take things to redistribute when everyone is smart enough to remove FEMA or any other government unknowns on site. Currently we have United Nations troops from China and Somalia on United States soil. Do you think that I am going to comply with a known foreign enemy? Not Hardly. This was totally useless article that requires updating because laws have changed and it appears that this article is 30 years old? Have a nice day. For those who will want to trade after the SHTF, making a demand like “I want or give me ” Will cost you your life. If you have a tradable item and you need something desperately. Explain your situation and what you are offering in trade. Many do not understand that certain skill sets are also tradable. I know how to produce antibiotics and certain medications. But I need a stable and safe area to work within. I also went to medical school. I can handle small cuts and deep wounds if I have the necessary items like disolvable sutures. Just saying that if the SHTF what is illegal is what you carry as your morality. And having items that can save your life isn’t going to stop you.

I don’t feel the article was totally useless, my opinion. If it gets those like me thinking in the vein of the possibilities if we have a search and seizure of our property, we will have some inkling of what could happen. I agree that when the SHTF, the only laws that will be enforced are laws made by either the biggest or most well armed person on the property. I will never be the biggest, but I can be armed somewhat. Its the before the SHTF that this article addresses, as we collect in a necessary abundance those things we need for survival, it could conflict with local laws.

My Friends & Visitors, please do not be misled…
Again I ask that you are not “MISLED.”
There is no-such-thing as an “Assault Weapon.” It doesn’t exist. The word, “Assault” is a verb that that means: “a violent physical or verbal attack” (Miriam-Webster).
The ONLY “Weapon” that has ‘ever existed’ lies between the approximate half-foot between our ears, and there is nothing more dangerous.
EVERYTHING ELSE is nothing but an ancillary ‘tool’ to be used as it was designed. And yet, the paper stapler on your desk can be used to access the “approximate half-foot between” an assailant’s ears.
The “controllers” and all of their puppets in DC and throughout the deep blue sea want nothing more than to strip your rights first to the second degree then to the first degree then to destroy the entire playbook.
      DO NOT COMPLY! Stock-up.

YES! Assault rifle is a made up name to demonize the weapon. Everyone remembers the AR is the ArmaLite corp. Silencer really should be called a suppressor because they, even in the smaller calibers are not quiet. I have only shot them in the 22,223 and 5.7 cal’s. And stood behind the firing line at an outdoor range while others fired. I read all these sites with a grain of salt. We are all smart enough to figure out how they pertain or not to us personally.

If you have it and it is illegal to have, then don’t “advertise” it. It’s no one business but yours right now. When SHTF the items could be life saving. At that time the laws won’t mean much and it may well be survival of the fittest. The same planning applies to ALL your Prepping supplies.

I do not have many prepping supplies, but do have some – as space and budget permits….
However, I am aware that, not only may it be necessary to share what I do have,
It may also be mandated (by very real Executive Orders on the books for decades) to have to surrender any “excess” provisions

I live alone in a blue city ( had moved away 3 times & 3 times circumstances required that i return here…) and stay prayerful as the tribulation increasingly rolls out.
We do what we can, as Almighty God helps us to!
However, it is still true that:
The Lord gives and the Lord takes away.
Life on earth is still a Life in Exile. Our true home is NOT here.
The most important preparation is: to be able to be happy forever with Holy God and our loved ones in His Heaven+

Since when did Columbia and Ottawa become states? Also according to the FBI there is no such thing as an “assault rifle”. They classify thecAR15 as a RIFLE ONLY!! We may “know” what they are talking about but that’s the problem. The anti gun crowd started using the term about 60yrs ago as a way to scare people about certain guns who have little knowledge about them. Which sounds scarier? Assault weapon/rifle or just rifle? The DOJ has a definition of them and neither the AR15 or civilian AK47 meet that description. They are classified as RIFLES because that’s what they are. Every time one of us pro gun people allows the termb “assault rifle ” to be used without calling them on it the more people will believe they ARE “assault weapns”. Look up the YouTube video of the Sheriff testing the claim over “high cap magazines “. Even a novice can change a mag and start shooting again before you can “rush them” to stop them as is always claimed as a reason to only have a 10 round or less magazine. I was even surprised. If you are pro gun and 2nd A you have to start calling the media, the govt and anti gun people on the team “assault rifle/weapon. And then educate them about the TRUTH on the subject.

If people, especially youngsters and young adults, are so strongly influenced by what they see on TV and in movies and video games, then yes, it matters when photos are posted with a finger on the trigger, when muzzles are pointed at people and when inaccurate language is used. If the pro-gun people can’t set a good example, how can they complain about the anti-gun people using incorrect language and unsafe practices against them? It really does come back to “Practice what you preach.”.

BTW, I do not consider myself to be a Fudd, NRA or otherwise. Rather, I am a certified NRA and Texas LTC Instructor and I take firearm safety very seriously. On my range, the same rules are practiced, whether using an Airsoft gun, a laser gun or a conventional firearm, dry firing or “hot.” That way, there is no confusion and there is only one set of safety rules and safe practices to remember and follow. You should try it sometime.

FYI as far as changing what the meaning of a word is have seen the recent ad that’s been running with the 20 something black guy with a lip that appears to be either injured or he’s had a stroke? It’s for some company claiming they help to get people back on track or something like that. The guy says something like “I’ve made some mistakes and even committed CRIMES but I’m NOT a CRIMINAL”. REALLY? Committing crimes is the definition of a CRIMINAL in any dictionary. But they are trying to change the language and the definition of the word “CRIMINAL “. JUST like they are changing the definition of “male” or “female” among many others. It may be a little thing to you but that’s what the left is counting on. Just like they have done with “assault weapon “. 50+yrs ago the anti gun crowd (aka the Brady Bunch) did a survey to find a word or phrase they could use to scare people about certain guns. “Assault rifle/weapon ” was determined to scare people the most because it made them think “machine gun”. Especially people who have little to no knowledge of guns. And over time they succeeded in their goal of getting everyone to use an INCORRECT word or phrase to scare people. Tell me you don’t think “machine gun” or similar when you hear the moniker “assault weapon “. I still do sometimes. And it is a FALSE NAME because the FBI classifies the AR15 as a RIFLE because it does NOT meet the definition of an assault weapon. As long as WE keep using it and allowing others to it will become MORE normal as time passes. As I said just look at other words they have started changing the definition of.

“There’s no way to rule innocent men. The only power any government has is to crack down on criminals. Well, when there aren’t enough criminals, one makes them. One declares so many things to be a crime that it becomes impossible for men to live without breaking laws. Who wants a nation of law-abiding citizens? What’s there in that for anyone? But just pass the kinds of laws that can neither be observed nor enforced nor objectively interpreted—and you create a nation of lawbreakers—and then you cash in on guilt. Now that’s the system, Mr. Rearden, that’s the game, and once you understand it, you’ll be much easier to deal with.”

Mail in your ‘Withdraw of consent to be governed’ notice to your state and the feds.
I sent my state one. Waiting a bit to see how it goes before sending in the one to the Feds.

Be aware that you might lose your voting privileges and be places on a ‘list’.

Remember, governments STILL have to abide by their own laws, rules, codes, regulations, and mandates/orders.

Just that their power over you is supposed to be neutered.

NEVER say yes to any question that starts with ‘do you understand…’
If you do, you agree to ‘stand under’ their authority.

All statutes are commercial and apply to US Citizens, which most of us are not. If you are not in the military, or a fed employee, you are a living Americans. Change your Status to reflect that and kiss their fed laws good bye! Read the 14th Amendment and ask yourself, does that definition apply to me. Most likely, the answer is NO!

RIGHTS THAT CANNOT BE TAKEN AWAY.
      We are NOT U.S. CITIZENS
STATUTES ARE NOT LAW – TO BE CONVICTED UNDER A STATUTE YOU MUST HAVE MY CONSENT.
We do NOT GIVE OUR CONSENT EVER. We are NOT U.S. CITIZENS, i.e. We are living Souls and not a dead entity written in all upper-case letters on a piece of paper or bond paper being claimed as a vessel owned by another living or dead entity.

“The Supreme Court has warned, “Because of what appears to be Lawful commands [Statutory Rules, Regulations and -codes–ordinances- and Restrictions] on the surface, many citizens, because of their respect for what appears to be law, are cunningly coerced into waiving their rights, due to ignorance… [deceptive practices, constructive fraud, barratry, legal plunder, conversion, and malicious prosecution in inferior administrative State courts].” (United States v. Minker, 350 U.S. 179, 187, 76 S.Ct. 281, 100 L.Ed. 185 (1956);”

All codes, rules, and regulations are for government authorities only, not human/Creators in accord with God’s Laws. “All codes, rules, and regulations are unconstitutional and lacking due process of Law..”(Rodriques v. Ray Donavan, U.S. Department of Labor, 769 F.2d 1344, 1348 (1985)); …lacking due process of law, in that they are ‘void for ambiguity’ in their failure to specify the statutes’ applicability to ‘natural persons,’ otherwise depriving the same of fair notice, as their construction by definition of terms aptly identifies the applicability of such statutes to “artificial or fictional corporate entities or ‘persons’, creatures of statute, or those by contract employed as agents or representatives, departmental subdivisions, offices, officers, and property of the government, but not the ‘Natural Person’ or American citizen Immune from such jurisdiction of legalism.”

You can have all the “beliefs” you want but I deal in reality. I have had to deal with some crazy people as a cop but the worst are the ones who are gullible enough to believe the BS being spread by them.

Thats like saying a Camaro with a 4 cylinder is the same as a Camaro with a big block 500hp engine. NO Army in the world that I know of uses an AR15 as their main battle rifle. Some MIGHT use them for target practice but I’ve never heard of any. The biggest difference between an AR15 and an M4 or M16 is the selector switch. Full auto or 3 round burst is NOT available on the AR15. A few have TRIED to convert them to do that but its illegal for one thing and for another they generally don’t work well and/or fall apart fairly quickly. Bump stocks IMO are basically toys and ared useless unless you have taken timed to leadrn how they work and learfn to ujsed them correctly. Yes the guy in Vegas used them but how m,anmy others have you heard of. As for “high cap mags” and the MYTH you c an “rush someone an d take them down” if they only have a 10 round mag is BS. There is a video on Youtube of a Sheriff trying that very thing with pistols and rifles. And not one time were they able to successfully “rush someone” to take them out. And that includes using people fairly novice to using the weapons and making mag changes. Its simply more left wing anti gun propaganda trying to convince gun owners and non gun owners that you don’;t “NEED” certain weapons for personal use. Then there is the falsehood about the 2nd A is NOT about personally owning a gun and its only for militias. NOWHERE from our Founders will you find any of them say it was ONLY for militias. And the 2nd A has NOTHING to do with hunting. Its about defending ourselves against a tyrannical government like England was. “Oh so you are going to go against tanks and planes? Yep if necessary. I mean Afghanistan did and the most high tech weapons they had (after using only single shot muskets for years) were some RPG’s and Stingers. And they fought the Russians to a standstill. You don’t have to WIN you just have to make it be an untenable situation. Like the Viet Cong did to us.

I’ll take my chances. HAVING, these weapons might save lives. In most states, you can have most of these. And I’m even in the vernacular, it’s my right per constitution to bear arms, when needed. Who dictates how what or when? You, the reader? Authority? I’m free, not a terrorist? I judge myself. It’s trying to deprive me of my freedom, that’s when bad things happen. I’d rather have it and not need it, than need it and not have it.

Be real here; most of the Ask A Prepper articles are informative and interesting.
Just call them what they are; MSR (Modern Sporting Rifle), after all, I have hunted with my AR.
The term shouldn’t be bad, isn’t an “Assault Rifle”, any rifle used to fend off an armed assailant?
I guess my 9mm could be considered an “Assault Pistol”, under the same scenario.

I can’t help but think that the legality of any of these things doesn’t much matter in the event that the S really Hits The Fan. There will be no law to worry about. Only survival. And quite frankly, having a silencer when predators are out hunting for food and supplies could very much be the difference between life and death. If you need to take out a scout silently, there is no better solution.

It’s funny that “silencers” are very restricted here. Not banned completely except in some states. You can own one after doing the paperwork and paying $200. But in European countries its almost mandatory to use them at ranges and for hunting to save your Hearing and be a good neighbor by not making much noise. Seems pretty backwards if you ask me.

There is no such thing. But I do like to use a suppressor on my 30.06. Predators have learned to come to the sound of firearms in some places. Kill a caribou, and 10 minutes later a bear shows up.

Dude, you are waaay out of date on Texas knife laws. They used to be some of the most restrictive in the country and classified some (usually by length or design, such as shuriken) as illegal knives. The law changed several years ago. There are no longer “illegal knives,” but there are now “location restricted knives.” You can walk around with a broad sword, Bowie, or machete if y’on’t to.
And of course the Texas License to Carry (open or concealed handgun) has the widest reciprocity with other states. You don’t have to be licensed to carry, but the penalties are usually felonies for non-license holders and misdemeanors for license holders. You can openly carry long guns.

This article, including the comments, describes the American legal system for what it is; the most evil entity ever to be invented by humans; a system that seeks to deprive the innocent of the right to self-defense. The American legal system is far worse than the Ole English law under England’s King George III. Colonial Patriots fought the Revolutionary War to rid themselves of tyrants, only to have their own homegrown tyrants rise from patriotism and freedom’s ashes.

Having not read everyone’s comments I will just comment on the article. The admonition to know the laws where you live and also where you plan to travel are good. I am not suggesting you obey them just that you know them. It will help you know what to conceal and what not to worry about. When the nation collapses the rules will change so assume the worst and prepare for it. That way anything less will be a pleasant surprise. And remember they are not going to play by their own rules. And when the time comes to use them, do your worst because they need to fear you. In the war that is coming you will get no mercy so give none in return. If anyone watched the TV series “Revolution” it is a good commentary on how our world may devolve. It will be territories with warlords in control who rule with an iron fist and take what they want from those they rule. Speaking as someone who has been shot, stabbed, and burned, if you are going to lose the battle, go out in a hail of bullets, never surrender to be tortured later. Using torture humans make Hell seem like a vacation resort on the Riviera.

Good rule of thumb: if you own anything that can help you protect yourself in any way from any governmental entity, it most likely breaks some kind of law or ordinance enough to be “taken in for questioning”. Because the rule of law only applies to citizens, not anyone claiming to be “from the government”. So, make sure you acquire any and every self defense item you could possibly need, but ALSO make sure you do it in a roundabout manner. It’s getting a lot harder to do this, which is why these little rules are being quietly passed everywhere. Those who plan on taking power for themselves want to make sure in advance that the general populace is unarmed, unaware, and helpless as possible before they do so. These types of people only see only two kinds of people: themselves, and those that must be subjugated. If you do not fit into that category easily, then you are a target to be removed.

Just remember that in today’s times…OPSEC…is crucial when you are a prepper and you are building a supply. In a true SHTF situation, most laws will go out the window. There may be a few over-eager LEO or National Guard wandering about looking to confiscate certain items or supplies in a more or less local or statewide emergency, but in a true nation-wide SHTF…we will mostly be on our own. Think OPSEC.

The only authority that government has is that which has been granted by the People they have sworn an oath to serve. We never gave these tyrants the authority to take away our means of self defense. Nor have we been granted a say (or a vote) in the matter.
It is the duty of every citizen to DISOBEY ANY UNCONSTITUTIONAL MANDATE OR LAW.
Never forget, these government employees are public servants, NOT our masters.
When the shiite hits the fan, the tyrants should be the first ones to receive the justice they so duly deserve.

I would urge all to comply with Federal & local laws. That said, in most cases, the Law does not prohibit the materials and components to manufacture at a critical time the necessary item(s) for life and property protection. Note: in most cases! My most important weapon is the one on my shoulders-I urge all ethical and moral people here to improve on the knowledge and physical skillsets. Even an 80yo can learn to pull a bow and place an arrow into a target….
