A disaster strikes in your city so severe that military, law enforcement, and major emergency response forces such as FEMA are deployed to handle the situation.
But then, to your surprise, you have FEMA personnel and law enforcement agents knocking on your door…and they demand to enter and see and take all the food, water, and supplies that you have on hand.
When deployed, FEMA provides disaster-relief experts to assist with the efforts of state and local governments, deploys personnel and equipment to assist with disaster-relief efforts and recovery, and offers funding to help support the rebuilding phase after the disaster has ended.
In a nutshell, FEMA is an agency designed to help handle and coordinate responses to major disasters. When they come it’s ‘to help’ right?
That’s what you may think until the FEMA personnel come knocking on your front door and demanding to take what you have.
But why would FEMA try to requisition your stockpile of food and supplies in the first place? Could they get away with it? If so, how should you react? We’ll attempt to answer those questions in this article.
Why Would FEMA Requisition Your Stockpile?
One scenario in which FEMA could requisition your possessions, including your stockpile, is if martial law were to be declared.

Martial law is the complete suspension of current laws enacted by the civilian government in favor of laws set by military authorities. Usually invoked during times of emergency, such as war or natural disaster, the purpose of martial law is to give the local authorities unlimited authority to create and enforce laws.
In other words, when martial law is declared, all existing laws on the books would effectively go out the window. Forget about having freedom of speech or the right to own your property. If the authorities were to decree in a martial law that they can come onto your property and take anything they want, there would be nothing to stop them from doing so.
That’s because when martial law is declared, it will be a top priority of the authorities to maintain strict control over the local population.
This will involve four major steps:
- Controlling the movements of the population and ensuring no one can leave (unless if the affected area needs to be evacuated)
- Controlling speech and propaganda
- Disarming the population to ensure they can’t fight back
- Making the population dependent on the authorities for food, water, and medication
After Hurricane Katrina, police units literally went door-to-door to confiscate firearms from legal gun owners.

In a longer term situation, the government could do the same thing, only they would take food, water, medicine, and other necessities. FEMA, with support from deployed law enforcement or military units, is an agency that would be among the most likely to carry this out.
The purpose of doing so would be to ensure that people can’t be self-sufficient. The authorities could then create bread lines to force people to stand in line for food. In other words, people will only be able to eat when and where the authorities would decree. They could withhold food.
How Should You React and Prepare?
A major disaster that involves government agencies confiscating necessities and supplies from the local population may seem unlikely, but it’s not at all outside the realm of probability. That’s why it’s a potential scenario that you need to be ready for.
There are three primary things you should do to react to this kind of situation:
Hide Your Stockpile
Think about extra hidden rooms in the home where you could store food, water, medicine, and other items.
If no such room exists in your home, consider making one.
For example, would it be possible to build a storage area into a wall?
Or what if you built an underground storage place outside? Here is how to build a cheap bunker in your backyard, to keep all your supplies hidden.
The point is to make sure that not all of your preps are clearly obvious. When the FEMA personnel come stomping through your house, you want to make sure it’s difficult for them to detect your stockpile.
They’ll likely check the kitchen, pantry, and garage first; whether they give the rest of the house and property a closer inspection likely depends on how strictly they’ve been ordered to remove the food and water supplies from the local population.
For an added tip, consider having multiple secret rooms or storage areas. In the event the FEMA personnel find and requisition one stockpile, they’ll hopefully be satisfied and move onto the next house.
Don’t Resist The Authorities
Secondly, make sure that you don’t resist the authorities when the time comes. Whether you like it or not, if FEMA and police are at your door you’re not going to be able to resist them, and if you do, you’ll be arrested and your items will be confiscated anyway.
Play it safe, and don’t resist while ensuring that much of your preps are kept a secret. Besides food, water, and medicine, the same goes for your firearms, ammunition, and other valuables as well.

Anything you think the government would want to confiscate from you, you’ll want to keep hidden in the event of a large-scale disaster happening.
Don’t Make It Obvious That You’re A Prepper
Additionally, you won’t want to announce to the rest of the world that you’re a prepper either. It’s always smart to keep your preps under-the-radar and only to inform those close to you within your circle of trust about your preparations.
This is one more reason why it’s smart to have your stockpiles hidden and not so obvious. If you have guests over at your house, for instance, they may not think twice about your preparations now but they definitely will remember after disaster strikes.
The last thing you’d want is for your neighbors to come knocking on your door after a disaster demanding you share your food, or otherwise for them to alert FEMA personnel that you have
In the event of a major natural disaster or emergency that brings on a massive government response, be prepared to have government forces coming to your door for your stockpile. The best way to get around this to ensure you won’t be dependent on the upcoming breadlines is to keep part of your stockpile hidden and secret.

I think the point of not resisting, is a) most of us would not have the personnel or weaponry on hand to come anywhere close to being able to repel a determined group of trained military or “police” with guns; and b) if would be better not to draw attention to yourselves, by leaving “some” expected types of supplies out where they can be found, rather than trying to save every last thing, and thus looking suspicious and likely bringing down more scrutiny. Even if you get the “authorities” to leave initially, you will now have aroused their suspicions and they will only return in greater force. Or with a search warrant, if they are still using such things.
I don’t think it is the fear of being “arrested”, I think it is the fear of being DEAD we are talking about. Those who think nothing of taking your personal food supply, will think nothing of shooting “resistance” or “hoarders” or whatever they choose to call those who actually thought to prepare ahead of time.
I once read a discussion of how to keep deer from eating your winter wheat; and one person said “I just plant a little extra for the deer.” I think that is a useful philosophy: rather than clinging to every last can or jar of food, just ASSUME there will be people coming to look for supplies at some point, and leave enough out (or lightly hidden) that they believe they have found your stash, and will go away more or less satisfied. When everyone around you is hungry, no one is going to believe you don’t have supplies hidden when you don’t appear to be starving yourself.

Being in my 70’s I have lived long enough that I WILL defend what I have — to a degree. But I will have a few tricks as well. #1 If a person or people come begging food I will answer the door ARMED and say “Thank God you are here. Do you have any food or water with you? We haven’t eaten in days”. To which they will likely say they don’t.
#2. IF the authorities set up food lines I will go and get mine as well so as not to alert anyone that I already have supplies. #3. IF I decide to give away anything they won’t get it for free. At minimum they will work for it. If they choose to fight well….. #4. My family and I have already decided we will use MY location to “bug in” as it’s the most defensible so I will have back up to “hold the fort”.
Only you can decide what your response will be if a SHTF scenario happens and that includes “AM I willing to kill to protect what I have”? In my area I trust 99.999% of the cops because I served with them and they are unlikely to take orders from FEMA or others who they don’t know. I do NOT trust many of the Chiefs and at least one of the local sheriff’s. But most of the sheriff’s are NOT going to roll over and take orders from the feds. And I’m talking about THE Sheriff’s. Yes there are some moronic deputies but the people they work with will fix that. I can’t say that for a Sheriff I don’t know but I do know the ones in my area personally and only one I don’t completely trust because he’s a liberal.
I do intend to hide my stash of food, water and guns and as the writer says “allow them to find” a little so they don’t get it all IF my current plans go south. Gotta have a plan B ya know.

How about have an additional plan for community, for generosity, for cooperation? If shit were to hit the fan, you should trust that the majority of victims WILL seek to cooperate! There is power and safety in numbers. During a disaster, gather together in cooperation, assess each members’ strengths and knowledge and create a survival plan TOGETHER! People can live off rice and beans for months. Know your flora and fauna in your region. Have a potable water plan. If the emergency is protracted, gather together what seeds you and your neighbors have. ASK FEMA what you can do to help, etc. I know that times like that will also bring out the opportunistic leeches and violent people- this is where your community will help monitor and protect. Will all have to sleep sometime, right? Prep with a generous heart! Imagine feasting in the privacy of your own home while bodies rot outside the front door. When decades go by, and you get time to remember to all, will you forgive yourself?
Many people may not have stores of food in their homes. Does not mean they are “useless” to you. People often have knowledge that (in terms of survival) will be more precious to you than your stockpiles of food but you will dismiss their value because they aren’t “preppers” or are “illegals”. I do not worry about it excessively. I am also a nurse and know I don’t need to haul around rice and beans to survive during a difficult time. I carry useful knowledge and skills within my brain and ANY community would benefit from cooperation with me. Be open minded (and prep)…nothing wrong with prepping except the clenched-fist spirit that often goes hand in hand with this type of person.

Nadia’s got it right. Prep as hard as you can, but share with anyone who comes to you, or else “Love your neighbor as yourself” has no force in your life. I cannot imagine God being pleased with me for killing my hungry neighbor instead of feeding him. God knows what His people need and He will provide, it’s in His Word (Mat 5). You may have only enough for today, and must depend on Him for your tomorrow, but that’s what He wants. See Exodus for “manna.” Sacrificial sharing pleases the Father (Mat 7) and if any one keeps Christ’s words, he said “my Father will love him.” John 14 However, “Thou shalt not steal” means I have property rights in God’s eyes. If someone shows up to steal, murder, or destroy, I will defend. I believe FEMA falls into that category. They will not be hungry, they’ll just be wanting a stockpile. They have a budget, let ’em use it to provide. What else is it for?
Share with one and you will soon be sharing with all and you will have nothing left. You will die of starvation.
Oh we do have a plan for sharing, food for the elderly & children. We don’t plan on bailing out self absorbed, childlike semi-adults who’d rather have the newest iPhone vs learning how to plan ahead.
Most of us over 50 started out broke or in a hole. Life made the hole deeper but we learned how to dig ourselves out. We learned how to ensure there was a dry, safe place to sleep, clean clothes and enough food to eat.
You have no one to blame but yourself if you’re over 18 and can’t figure out how to buy food and pay rent. Move somewhere where you can apprentice in a union. Wash dishes, hell, they’ll even feed you. Work in a nursing home. Work 2 jobs and cut back on your expenses.

I also wonder… whether there’s room there for community gardening. Many hands make light work, but also a community can guard gardens, and there’s less for the FEMA/militia to take away on any given day. Yes they might ear mark you for future raids, but you can always hide how much you harvest by a bit, it’s amazing how bad the cabbage moths were this year!
Food in the ground (that’s still growing) is another way to ‘hide’ your preps by delaying the harvest.
In a SHTF scenario, you want to be as well rounded as possible. I agree with Nadia 85%. It depends on your community/neighborhood. Unless you know where people stand, their ages, skills, etc; just have a feel for what the people around you are like, you can’t count on this as a viable option. As it is now summer, GREAT time to organize a neighborhood BBQ and see who all you’re dealing with nearby. Meet and greets are NEEDED!!!!!!!!

I normally don’t post but this is not too far fetched. The United States has 0 strategic food reserves for its citizens. It used to be over 80 days to give our farms enough time to regrow food and get livestock replaced in a catastrophic event. We have strategic fuel and weapons reserves but nothing for us. Don’t worry about FEMA it will be the local leadership who will declare authority and do as they seem fit. Most military personnel if it is an end of civil society at large with the country leaders holed up safely will try to get to their family. The government has for decades has told it citizens to have at least 3 weeks of essential supplies for their group, ie your on your own. Notice how when it is a disaster somewhere the local leadership and civil authorities need our donations and MRE food from military and reserves caches. We can all scream and holler at each other but in the end we are all on our own and no one from the Left, Right or middle will be there nor have any of them made any effort to rebuild the countries food reserve because it cost money and it doesn’t generate any votes. The State and Federal officials have a plan for bugging out folks without a care for our fates.
If you hand out food, they will be back for more. Probably in large aggressive groups. The word will get out to the “gangs” that form when STHF, and reports of who had what to give away will be targets. A few select neighbors that you can barter with on the low low is reasonable. Read Steve Konkoly to get a real idea of human behavior in SHTF. Very well written novels. Sometimes small communities can organize, but it is unlikely. Make sure that all the food preps that are visible to FEMA are the ones that you have poisoned. All the non-poisoned food is in a secure location. Once the word gets out that FEMA is poisoning everyone, people will start killing all cops and government officials they see and FEMA will not take any further chances on confiscating anything.

Why? Why do we assume FEMA or any other agency will be around to take anything from us, or alternatively, to lend a hand to us? Fear-driven chaos and anarchy with no one to turn to for help, except those whom we previously learned to trust and love. That is the prep that will reestablish pockets of order and survival. Small, but lose-knit communities, unified by common faith or purpose have the best chance.

I see that the right and left are at it again. When we we learn that as Americans, we should protect each other and not hate those who think differently than we do. I am not liberal, and I am not conservative. I don’t think that something as complex as a human being can be accurately defined by one word. I do not support either of the two major political parties because I do not trust politicians. I think it is okay to hate the person running for office that you do not agree with, but you can not hate the people who voted for that person. If you are a real American, you stand up for the rights of your brother and sister Americans to choose their own path; you do not hate them for it. I too think the government is way too big and out of control, so we must vote for people who are courageous enough to make the changes we need. Sure, I own guns and have my whole life, and I will protect my family. I can also destroy most people in hand-to-hand combat, but that is a last resort only. When the SHTF, we will have to work together to survive. If we can’t live together, we will die together.
I will definitely be handing over my ammunition stockpile.
