These 6 Types of People Wouldn’t Last a Day Off Grid

The idea of living off the grid and living a truly self-sustainable lifestyle free of the dangers and unpredictability of modern civilization is alluring.

This is especially true for those who are gravely concerned that an economic collapse or another kind of major disaster is inevitable and believe they are better off living off-grid with their families.

But while off-grid living is a very viable way of living for many people, it’s simply not for everybody.

When you live off the grid, much of your lifestyle is going to revolve around the tasks and chores that come with it.

The people who do live off grid get enjoyment and satisfaction out of doing these tasks on a daily basis, which includes growing and harvesting crops, collecting and purifying water, and ensuring that enough renewable energy is being generated to power their property.

Living off requires you to adapt to a lifestyle that is vastly different from the conveniences that come with becoming connected to the grid. Certain types of people simply won’t be able to adapt to this loss of convenience.

Here are six types of people who won’t last a day off grid:

People Who Value Comfort and Convenience

Many people have simply grown completely dependent on modern comfort and conveniences and would be unwilling to give those up.

Think about it. You can order food and have it delivered right to your door within thirty minutes.

These 6 Types of People Wouldn’t Last a Day Off GridYou can take a shower without having to worry about how much water you’re using up.

You can go to the bathroom without having to worry about the wastewater and sewage.

Related: How Long Can You Store Water Before It Becomes Unsafe To Drink?

You can go down the street and order your favorite specially-made coffee. You can get heat to your home with the turn of a knob and without having to worry about how you get heat in the first place.

You get the idea. Most people simply don’t have the mindset shift to give up these kinds of luxuries.

People Who Are Picky About What They Eat

If you live entirely off the grid, the days of going out to eat at your favorite restaurants or going to the grocery store will be in your past.

While you may treat yourself to eating out at a restaurant once in a while, most of your meals will be restricted to foods that you have stockpiled, grown, harvested, raised, or hunted. You’re going to be eating a lot less packaged and processed foods, if not entirely.

If you’re someone who’s a picky eater and if you can’t see yourself eating a diet of locally grown and raised seasonal foods, then off-grid living is probably not for you.

People Who Are Lazy and Need Instant Gratification

These 6 Types of People Wouldn’t Last a Day Off GridIt’s simply impossible to be lazy and live an off-grid lifestyle.

Living off the grid means you are going to be very physically active with activities such as checking the chicken coop, planting seeds, harvesting grown crops, working on DIY projects, gathering firewood, constructing pens or shelters, and so on.

In off-grid living, there is no such thing as instant gratification. You have to work for every part of your basic way of life, and this requires you to be active and improve your stamina and endurance.

It also requires a high degree of patience, because gaining enough energy from the sunlight or waiting for your crops to grow always takes time.

If you’re someone who spends most of their time on the sofa watching TV, an off-grid lifestyle probably isn’t what you’re looking for.

Tech Addicted People

People who are addicted to their phones and computers are also unlikely to thrive when living off the grid.

While most people who live off the grid still own phones and computers for communication with the outside world, the bulk of their time is spent either on work or on tasks related to ensuring that they can live comfortably off the grid.

If you’re someone who needs to spend every waking minute on your computer or phone, an off-grid lifestyle is probably not for you.

People Who Don’t Love The Outdoors

These 6 Types of People Wouldn’t Last a Day Off GridLiving off the grid means that you will inherently need to spend more time outdoors.

Collecting rainwater, tending to your gardens and livestock, making sure your solar panels are working properly, and so on will all require you to be outside for a long time.

Related: These Are the Best Chicken Breeds for Preppers

There’s a reason why many people who live off the grid are nature lovers. They simply love being outdoors and spending time in nature.

If you’ve always been an indoors-oriented person or have always loved living in an urban environment, it’s going to take a lot for you to re-adjust to an off-grid lifestyle.

People Who Are Wasteful

One of the appeals of off-grid living is living resourcefully. But while some folks are drawn to this way of living, other people who are used to simply throwing away food or items that they no longer need or don’t like will be ill-suited for an off-grid lifestyle.

One of the daily goals of any person living off-grid is to extend resources as much as possible. This is why a major part of off-grid living revolves around finding ways to minimize waste, recycle or repurpose items, saving and preparing uneaten food for later, and

Living off the grid is a rewarding experience for those who are fully embracing it. People who love to be outside in nature, love developing their DIY and survival skills, value living resourcefully and harvesting their own food and water, and who enjoy spending many hours of their day on physical projects related to everyday living experience great fulfillment in living off the grid.

However, off-grid living is not an ideal lifestyle for everyone. The above six types of people that we’ve covered may be drawn to the idea of living self-sustainably and away from the power grid, but they’ll likely struggle hard when it comes to actually living off the grid in their day-to-day lives.

We would be surprised who will and who won’t survive.
The will to survive is a great thing that some people have. They just have that will to live.
Think of a bear attack, if you live and they have, that is the will to live.

We will see some people that never prep, live for a good long time in all this mess that is coming to your Door step.

It will be a sad time to watch all of these woke clowns try and survive.

Most of these soft fag men will be gone quickly, then only the strong will survive.

Watch out for these people coming in over the borders. They will be some very nasty people, they are some really sorry ass people coming in.
Do Not trust them. Happy face dose not mean a happy heart.

This is it. You live they die OR they live you die. Your choice.

Hell is here. So is Heaven. Again your choice…

2024 prediction Biden if he does or doesn’t win a second term in these first few months of 2024, Biden will dropout.
The CA gov Newsom will be placed into office without an election. After that there will be no more presidential elections as we know it. Newsom has made several overseas to places avoiding his governor duties of cleaning the poo of the streets and sidewalks.
During Covid Crisis he contracted taxpayers money to China mask manufacturer than an America company to employ American workers.

He has rubbed shoulders with dictator president XI. The San Fransicko city government told citizens they could not clean up the poo sidewalks but did when XI came to visit San Fransicko city.
Who is CA gov Newsom’s boss the American taxpayer or the Chinese dictator president?

CA gov Newsom has made the CCW ineffective passing a California gun law making the whole State a GUN FREE ZONE.
You liberals voted for Biden, don’t make a mistake with CA gov Newsom and Michell Obama, America can no longer afford political mistakes anymore.

Do not forget in California illegals now get Medical benefits. What happened to Americans Medicare and Medical for Americans only?
These Bidenomics politicians in Blue States cater to the illegal replacements of American legal citizens.
Deport all of them illegals since the last 100 years including the anchor babies or pay 100 thousand US dollars per anchor baby, illegal parents and daisy chain relatives.

Illegals are getting American veterans medical benefit treatments as American homeless vets and vets in general get the SHAFT!
Illegals in some States are able to become police officers besides voting in general elections.
Biden, Newsom, Michelle Obama or any other Demoncrat will be the end of American independence as we see it in the future.

If the illegals all got deported America would have half of the economy brought back to normal.
Less stress on taxpayers funding illegal’s welfare, Medical and Medicare benefits reserved for Americans.
Or the other way is to have them pay each $100K per family member plus+ what ever the going rate is to pay off the $35+ Trillions of American dollars debt America is in. America is finite in resources and land to support an unsustainable invasion of Biden’s illegals.
Build the border wall with the paid for wall materials sitting in the desert.
Border asylum is a legal term invented by the Marxist forces in Obama and Biden’s worlds to transform America into a Marxist nation.

The Biden administration must adapt to being water boarded at Guantanamo Bay prison including all activist, ACLU, all those who have usurped the immigration laws of supporting the illegals crossing into our America.
We support legal immigration by the American laws, not Biden’s Trojan Horse illegal invasion of America.
Deport, Deport, build the wall regardless what Biden says and drill for oil in America. Send the foreign governments all their wind mill farms back to their countries pronto!

Many of those coming over the border have survived actual hard times/lives not fictional – make pretend ones. Maybe someone with an actual open heart and mind could learn a thing or two from them. Having lived and travelled in these bad neighbor hoods much of my life, I can say we in the USA live exceptionally privileged lives. An attitude of gratitude always.

Yeah, Jim, that sounds perfectly awesome! I would love to live in Chile. Yet, remember that in the 1970s the Chilean Government murdered thousands that didn’t agree with their political agenda, and then they placed them inside the new concrete walls of a stadium (I think) and made sure that no one ever found their dead bodies that way. They wanted to cover up all the mass -murders, and they did it with concrete! No all this murdered were Chileans, either!

If you search for documentaries about how the Chilean government acted in decades past, you will find all you need to know about what I’ve described.

If Chile and south America are such great nations why are their low educated citizens rushing to America for asylum and work?
Years ago American retirees built homes in Mexico for retirement. The Mexican government got a wild hair and took over those retiree homes by eminent domain. Those people lost their entire savings and shirts in the deal.
Same thing can happen to Ex patriot Americans living in all foreign countries too.

So live it up while you can, but don’t ask us to bail you out, like Biden’s student loan bailout to liberals. Amos

Ahh yes. The wasteful. I chic my head on a nearly daily basis at people who actually throw out items such as milk, cream, yogurt, and fresh meat, because “it is going to expire in a few days”. Seriously? They are not smart enough to throw fresh meat into the freezer or can it or smoke it? Throwing out fresh dairy products before they even reach their best before date? With all of the things that you can make out out of dairy? Or even freeze it. Personally… I have found that store-bought yoghurt is delicious even two months past its expiry date.

But I think it’s more than just being wasteful. It Hass to do with not having developed the skills. I have offered to show people how to preserve food by canning. I have tried to show people how to make yogurt.

I have yet to have one person take me up on it. These people presume that things are going to be there.

    Personally…

The article focuses on the types of attitudes that would fail. Maybe, a look at why or how those attitudes and behaviors are developed? I love my 20 minute hot showers, but I also have lugged a 10 gal. milk can of water from a creek to have camp water for food/drink and a wash pan bath. I love, AND use any convenience at my disposal, but also know how to scale back as far as needed to get a job done. Be sure your family has the knowledge too.

Good points in this article. I worry some because I am over half way thru my seventies and I have to admit to my self that I could have done more at age 50, but I am sure I will still outlast most of the 20-30 year old’s out there. I see way too much of the six traits in the younger people out there.

Me & mine are doomed. I’m old with a back injury but I do as much as I can. It just takes me a little longer because I have to stop & rest my back (ruptured disc, degenerative spinal disease & pinched sciatic nerve). My family say they want a homestead life but when it comes to the work they rarely show up. They MIGHT help plant the garden but no one wants to tend it or help harvest & preserve the harvest. But they will show up for the eating! It’s that way for anything we attempt. I can’t even get my husband to feed, water chickens & gather eggs daily. He’s the one that wanted chickens. I’m at my wits end & at this point have pretty much given up. I physically can’t do it all by myself & I’m tired of trying. Ok. I’m through whining. Just adding my family to the list of people who wouldn’t last a day off grid. LOL

So sorry to hear about your back, Big prayer coming your way.
Please do not give up nor stop living.
Yes it is very hard, but when my time here becomes so bad at times, I cry out to Jesus and ask my Father in Heaven to help me keep going, just as your Son Jesus did, when he was going to the cross.
GOD hears you and “in His mighty time”, Our father will be there for you.
      Just be patient…
I will pray for you. JUST RECIVE IT.

One favor, tell GOD, thank you for healing me, in Jesus mighty name.
Say as much as you can, don’t over do it. but give joy to him…

Little Red Hen,, i’m somewhat in the same boat as you. i carry a 5 gal. plastic bucket with me now when i’m in the garden or out doing something. i carry some TP and water in it JIC, i can also sit down on it if needed which is often. HA,
adapt and overcome. never give up-never surrender to old age. we just have to learn new ways to do things. a few things done everyday will add up. i don’t depend on others, to do so is to be let down when you most need them the most. while they won’t help you now, they will be the first ones at your door when things go bad. people are selfish.
      best of luck to you.

I’m turning 77 this month. I have many old back injuries = degenerative spineal disease, = peripheral neuropathy in all 4 limbs.
Still I thrive on figuring out how to make life work off grid. I have solar electricity. My 2nd well has a manual winch on it. I garden, pressure can and sun dry produce and herbs. I sew and have repaired a tredel sewning machine. I also knit and crochet. I can creat a garment that looks and fits good without a pattern. I can take an older garment and make something out of it. I love cooking from scratch. I can cook just fine on a stove or a campfire. I forage for food and medicine. I can make extracts, infusions. Creams, ect. I like the challenges of life. I have both power tools and hand tools. That goes for things for the kitchen also. I have 20 better solar panels, wire, tape, fittings, and tools and extra charge controllers and inverters. Need more batteries but I have an answer to that also. A Prius hybrid battery is more powerful than many home battery banks. With the right inverter it can power a lot, thee car has an inverter and charger built into it. I’m designing a way to use it for home use. It’s fun doing those things. I also do woodworking for the joy of designing and building things.
Would I be a survivor? Possibly. That would depend on God and my willing participation in life.

It really doesnt matter who, where why you are
if not prepared and have a group, circle of , and people of like minded you wont survive
and this is only for a short period of time
one more day , one more month , one more year
only to die in vain , no purpose , just to support the coming narritive
Control , false worship, fake gods, fake church, fake people who just love themselves and only want thier best interest
do the math , figure it out , you cannot survive the coming koas
There is a draw back to every situation
Train for self defense , self awareness, and action so you can at least take some down on your way out
As the bible says , Read, Pray , Trust God , Believe what the truth is
1/3 destruction by mankind , 2nd round destroyed by mankind 1/4 of earth population
YOU must look, seek , ask God to reveal truth , Not religeon , Truth
only then will you truly see
    Spiritual , not Physical
YOU cannot buy , pay, your way to heaven NO Work s of the Flesh
ONLY obedience to Gods Word , Faith in Jesus Christ , Holy spirit in YOUR heart , and Repentance , True Turning away from sin , those who Flaunt Sin, Those who commit sin like there is no fear of Judgement
Give to the needy , widow s and orphans, in need , not greedy
YOU cannot buy thru money grobing churchs who just want money
Spitural , Thru a faith based relationship to God , Thru Jesus Christ
Read , Pray , Follow Ten Commandments , Truly Love your neighbor , NOT thier sin.

      I think anyone can survive.
Just because we think that we need a group of like minded people around us to survive, dose not mean that we all need that to survive.

So I think you can make it with out a group.
Seam that we just might get to see what work’s and what dose not work, this year.

    Good evening every one,
Some great comments here and every time I read them I am picking
    A lot of useful information,
You can find a lot on U-Tub.
If you know how to use it,
The woods can supply what you need to serve , From shelter to building a fire,
How to use every thing a round you to setting animal traps,
To using and building what the Indians did,
or far back as the cave men,
The wood will provided most every thing,
The big thing will be Trespassing , ,
And if times get that tough , The farmer will have a hard time
keeping what he has, , If you hunted small game when you were young ,

I had ancestors who fought in the Revolutionary War. My 10x grandfather was Samuel Adam’s who was an instigator behind the Boston tea Party and that War. I read the lives of the men of that time and I’m amazed at their strength and their determination. Many then were living on the land and quite capable of living off the land. So many today are totally unprepared.

    One tip
    To make a soft bed,
Take big heavy trash bags and fill with leaves.
Warm bed , on the ground, Heat rocks and cover with dirt,
    Put you blanket over it,
All night fire , Long Fire, ————————————– 12 to 13 inch log
    —————————————- A bout 4foot long
    ———————————————–Stack and but tender
in the middle of the two on the ground, and place the 3rd one on top
in the middle of the two on the ground and start your fire from both ends.
Should last 4to 6 hours and set you tent up a bot 3-4 feet in front of it.
Build a small wood wall behind your fire to help reflect the heat tared the open tent .

It’s an “ok” article. Gives all of us something to think about. But I see a need to have a concrete definition of “off-grid”. For as long as I have known, off grid means not being connected to public utilities.

But I see a lot of people referring to off grid in three areas, and those three areas

First is living in the back country. Well, that it certainly is off grid. I lived off grid for several years. Hauled my own water in. I had for a while generators for the electricity some of my tools needed, but I found that going solar was much better. I kid you not when I say that going solar paid for itself in the first month’s use. But I still went to town for supplies. And seriously guys, there is no way you can subsist on your own 100% away from society. You will always need something that requires going to town.

Second is where the first leaves off. Living on your own, trying to achieve zero contact with society. Got a car or truck? Ok, I suggest you license & insure it unless you want to spend a few hundred bucks in fines or spending time in the county jail. Ok, let’s say you don’t have a car or truck. You have a horse or mule. Vaccinations are a must for those. They need a veterinarian periodically. Guess what? Unless that vet makes house calls out in the BFE you want to live in, that means you have to go to town. Are ya gonna ride a sick horse 6 miles to the vet? That’s how far from town I lived when I was off grid. Not far at all considering back long ago when I lived 54 miles from the closest grocery store.

Third is rather distressing. I hear this lot here and have for as long as I can remember (and I’ve been coming here ever since Claude started it), and I don’t know what to call it. Civil war? Revolutionary war? Civil unrest? Whatever kind of calamity you can dream up, doing what you can to survive it is normal. And yeah it’s off grid, but…it’s more survival than off grid living.

Me, AFAIC if it’s a civil war to me it’s the Third Revolutionary War. But that’s just my opinion. When that happens, or we get invaded, living in the back country may not be a very good idea. Well yeah, somewhat. To me it’s hiding out, trying to stay hidden from the government. Hiding out isn’t living. And while I don’t have much faith nor fondness for our government, if someother country is stupid enough to invade, I will stand up in defense of my country. You are here because of one of two reasons- either you are a first generation naturalized citizen or your family had at some point stood up and fought for or died for America in her time of need. If you don’t want to, that is your right to choose. But you have no right to complain if things go sour and you loose your rights.

So while you are living off grid in whatever manner you feel proper, just remember- even you need a doctor or a dentist. Guess you’re not off grid if you have an appendicitis. If not that, there are a variety of ailments that tinctures and herbs can’t stop. Welcome to living on Planet Earth.

And this is why we need a concrete definition of off grid living.

Hello CK. Johanna and I are the authors of the Self-Sufficient Backyard: For the Independent Homesteader, Off Grid and Free: My Path to the Wilderness and our latest, The Modular Backyard Power Plant.

I don’t swing in here too often but caught this article and especially your comment. I have an answer for you: http://inthewilderness.net/2023/04/06/those-people-arent-off-grid-how-dare-they-claim-that/

It addresses precisely your question since there’s obviously as you note, a lot of confusion on the topic. Since we’ve been off grid now going on 44 years, I think we have a good idea of a definition. Stay safe!

That’s because all the criminals from Chile have moved to more fertile ground and that happens to be America. I guess America is still the land of opportunity.

Prepping and self-sufficient does not mean hardship and cobbled together. As stated in other posts seek an affluent 1880s lifestyle with ultra modern low voltage electronics and lighting added in. 1880s heating (pretty fireplaces, pretty stoves, pretty boilers with under floor tubing or radiators) with 2024 LED lighting. Gardening, canning, preserving, chickens, sheep, goats, cows all save money so elegant date nights are still possible. A fully restored older car or truck can be very fun and beautiful as well as functional for prepping. The Amish choose to not decorate their creations but that does not mean you cannot embellish and fine craft your projects! Some people have limited resources so have to be more focused on recycling/reuse for their projects but nothing is preventing anyone from prepping with style if they have the skills, time and some resources.

I personallt beleive that you should have added “drug-addicted peope” to your list.

One haracteristic that I have noticed from helping he homeless is that those who are addicted to most drugs tend to use large amounts of sugar in their coffee or other beverages.

Having a drug-addicted person inyour survivl team is also a no-no, in my humble opinion…
