9 Hiding Spots In Your House Where Looters Always Look First

When stockpiling supplies, it’s vitally important to hide as much of your stockpile as you can.

If the grid goes down, people will become desperate and once ordinary people will turn into thieves, raiders, and looters to the streets to rob and steal what they can to stay alive. They’ll target homes and stores in town first, and once those have been looted and stripped, they’ll set their sights on suburban homes next.

You may think you already have it figured out for how you can keep your stockpile a secret and hidden from any thieves or looters who may break in.

Unfortunately, thieves and looters can be a bit smarter than you may think. They’re already taking a major risk by breaking into any home, and they won’t want to leave empty-handed in exchange for taking that risk.

Furthermore, many thieves and looters will already be experienced and know exactly where to look in your home for your valuables or stockpiles.

That’s why it’s critical to be extra creative with where you hide your stockpiles and avoid hiding them in areas where looters are likely to look first.

⇒ The Most Important Items You Need To Survive When SHTF

Here are the nine hiding spots in your house that looters will always look for first:

Attics And Basements

It’s common practice for preppers to stockpile their food, water, and other supplies either in the attics or the basements of their homes.

The logic for doing so certainly makes sense. This way their stockpiles are out of the way and out of sight of any guests who come to visit. It’s important to keep your stockpiles as much of a secret as you can.

Just because your neighbors and regular guests are friendly now doesn’t mean that they won’t come knocking on your door demanding supplies later.

9 Hiding Spots In Your House Where Looters Always Look First

That being said, while stockpiling supplies in your attic or basement may be a good way to keep your preps a secret from your neighbors and guests you have over, it’s a much poorer way to keep them hidden from burglars and looters who break into your home.

Related: How To Make Pepper Spray

That’s because most burglars are acutely aware that people will often store valuables in their basements and attics, so they are two rooms they will often go to investigate first.

Closet

A closet is perhaps the most obvious hiding spot there is. Looters will look through your entire closet, including the pockets of the clothing in your closet, looking for valuables, guns, or cash.

It’s common practice among many people to store their valuables in closets as well. If you have any valuables you’re keeping in your own closet at the moment, you would be wise to think about another location for them.

Dressers

Many thieves are acutely aware of the old trick of hiding valuables amongst shirts, socks, and underwear stored in dresser drawers. That’s why a burglar will open your dresses and pull all the clothing you have out looking for anything from cash to watches to jewelry.

Additionally, think twice about having any jewelry boxes on top of your dressers. If you have a jewelry box out in the open and a burglar comes rummaging through your house, it’s an absolute certainty that the box will disappear with them.

Mattress

9 Hiding Spots In Your House Where Looters Always Look FirstThe closet and dresser drawers will likely be the first two locations a burglar looks for in the bedroom. The next location they’ll look is under the bed and under the mattress. Just like how it’s common practice for people to store valuables in their closet, it’s also common practice to ‘hide’ valuables under a mattress.

Safes

A safe may seem like the ultimate place for storing precious items such as firearms or jewelry because it offers protection against both thieves and a house fire.

But a safe also makes it incredibly obvious about where your valuables are being hidden. Any small and portable safe can be easily picked up and carried out by a looter.

⇒ Do You Know Why You Should Never Put A Tall Fence Around Your House?

A heavy safe, such as a safe designed to carry rifles, will offer more protection. Most burglars will try to get in and out of your house as quickly as possible, and attempting to break into a big safe certainly isn’t going to help quicken their pace.

That being said, if a burglar happens to be experienced with safe cracking and is determined enough to try and break in, then your safe no matter how large is going to be vulnerable.

Suitcases

This is another old trick: to keep valuables ‘hidden’ in suitcases. The idea is thieves won’t think there’s anything inside your suitcases since you’re not traveling, but many thieves and burglars will be aware of this old trick just like how they’re aware of the mattress trick as well.

Storage Sheds

9 Hiding Spots In Your House Where Looters Always Look FirstBurglars and looters may not just target the inside of your house; they may target other buildings on the property as well. Besides your garage, they may also break into any storage sheds or shops that you have outside.

Under the Stairs

Many homes have a spare storage space under the stairs. This is a good space to store certain items that you could do without, perhaps, but it’s not a good place to store your precious valuables.

Vases

Hiding valuables in vases is another classic trick. Most burglars who don’t care about their presence in the home being known will just knock over vases and other glass furnishings to break them and see if there’s anything inside.

If you were thinking about using any of the above locations as a hiding place for your valuables or supplies, you may want to consider getting a little more creative.

Imagine yourself as a burglar breaking into your home. Move through your home and think about the places where you would look first.

Additionally, and this may sound a bit strange, when going to the homes of your friend or family, imagine yourself as a burglar as well and where you would look in their homes.

You’ll likely come up with a few more hiding places that were not included in the above list.

Good article with helpful advice, but can you give advice on good places in the home in which to hide loot?

It’s what most criminals know, we the public are a step backwards. Some of us know where to place stuff. This article is a plus and minus for newbies but an idea source for criminals too.

      In Heat ducts,
      build false ceilings,
build a fake wall at the end of a hall,
in a sofa:remove the dust cover, add a shelf or false bottom on the bottom of the sofa, store your stuff, replace the dust cover.
build a shelf above the door INSIDE a closet, no one looks up there,
Make a fake mayonaise jar by spraying inside with white paint. (No one is going to steal your mayonaise)
I am sure there are many others.

Or even dig a hole in your garden, store valuables in
sealed bottles, bury the hole, put a flat rock on top so
you can easily find it again.

if you bury your valuables make sure to dip the top in wax. If it is a metal top it will prevent rust. If the top is plastic you can make sure that it is sealed all the way down the lid and the plastic won’t breathe.

That is the reason for the statement “get creative”? If he tells you, gives you ideas where else to actually hide your stuff…then he essentially tells/gives the bad guys information as well? “Where to put things is a conversation to have with someone you trust. Who is knowledgeable in the subject. And should be done in person. People…learn that SM is not the place to get all your answers. It is only a place to get ideas. (The bad guys are doing the same?)
Kind of dumb for me to tell the bad guys that your Prec. Mtls are in a sealed bag in the bottom of the potato bin…because that’s where I just told you to put them?
He gave you information…You are a Doctor? Meaning you are not stupid? Figure something out…

I agree with you. This article tells you where looters will look, but it won’t suggest alternative places because then the criminals will look in those suggested alternative places! I agree, I think the idea of the article is to point out obvious places and encourage people to think creatively about alternative places without disclosing those places to the world on the net!!!

A false wall with an invisible opening in a closet. Make it look like a cedar wall. IF we really have problems, you can’t ever leave your home unguarded with someone who WILL shoot to kill.
Our island is known for “you loot we shoot- bodies will never be found…crabs have to eat, too.” No looting after hurricanes here.

Instead of specific locations, think of the principle of an onion, having multiple layers of protection.

The more difficult it is for you to access, the more difficult or less likely someone will even bother to look for it.

In an open society an the new AI technology we open up our dirty laundry in public. It comes from the early days of “FB” people telling fake friends about or where they go on vacation. Social media has warped peoples ideas of secrecy. ‘Loose lips sink ships.’

So social media gives the ne’er-do-well’s a goal to our easy pickings.
Books written, videos and websites have made crimes easy pickings with the knowledge gained.
Before the internet we had trial and error to become criminal minded. We had a different mindset and did jobs to feed ourselves not looking to ransack the neighbors for food or so.
So defending our homes and property should be a no-brainer in America. Your stupid enough to steal than you get what you deserve. A shot or knife and a free ride to the morgue.
The current crime mode is the dirt-bag gets a pass by a G. Soros DA out of jail. But the person defending themselves goes to jail instead.

Just like a current religious group is taking the rainbow flag symbol back from the pedo’s and gays. Back to it’s normal symbol and use.

So must the legal system get reversed. The criminal goes to jail and the defender stays free. The American way of freedom has been eroded by the Marxist creeping into our society.
What will you do to reform the Marxist chaos in our country?

Plan 2 – Hide your food and valuables in the attic, basement, closets, dressers, mattrasses, safe, suit cases, under the stairs, and even vases. Store so much that a team of looter can’t haul it all off except in multiple trips with a traffic director. Make some of you preps obvious for a first grab. When they are gone get some more preps hidden behind your stinky sock drawer and feast for lunch. Love your neighbor with a full belly.

My father built hidden doors all throughout the house in the 50s, one of which was his workshop with its own generator and full-size Vargas girl posters. He built a bomb shelter underneath the garage during the Cuban missile crisis. The lead door was hidden underneath thick grass cloth wallpaper that looked seamless. He built a unit inside the shelter that distilled water from a rain barrel and a machine you hand cranked to create oxygen. No one knew it was there not even the new buyers 20 years later.

Rebeca, who’s house is it that you live in? the gov’t’s house? code enforcement’s? do you think you have the right to decorate YOUR house or does the gov’t have to approve of any changes to your choice in decorations? Adding fake walls is not changing the structure of a house, nor against code enforcement.
Considering the cause of the original problem might even be gov’t, I would make modifications to accommodate me and my family without a second thought (and I’m the furthest person from a finishing carpenter!

when the hiding place suggestion is “ductwork” >>> PLEASE – don’t be stupid enough to take a heat or return grill off the wall and use that as a secure location – might as well just leave it in the open with a balloon attached ….

go into your basement or crawlspace and check out the actual duct runs spanning out from your furnace – in a grid down SHTF the furnace will most likely be out of service – the rectangle ducts can be as large as 12″ X 30″ – accessible by removing the end cap – 6″ & 8″ round ducts feeding the individual room registers are also an eazy detachment & access ….

if you have loose grain to hide – think about pouring it down a floor register after plugging the basement end – a 2 story high run of 6″ sheetmetal duct would hold several hundred pounds …..

All of these ideas are great, but what if you don’t have any ducts in your house? We have electric heating and a propane insert in our fireplace. That’s it so far. I cannot get my husband interested in building any doors or fake walls or ANYTHING! I have seriously been considering digging a hole in the backyard, beneath my black cherry trees, and putting stuff inside plastic bags inside an old stainless canner, not that it will hold all that much! But, it might be something, especially if it contained meds. or supplements or something like that.
I also have loads of seeds and an established garden, but it is close enough to the road to be seen, so that’s a bummer. Especially so, because we have loads of berry bushes! What to do? I have found a few interesting places to hide a few freeze-dried fruits and veggies, and even a little canned tuna, but all else is in plain sight, unfortunately!

    Best,

My husband hasn’t hit the same neurotic level as I can manage at times either, praise the Lord. I belong to a great small church, talking to another member of the congregation this week my thoughts are that we should ‘Play Joseph’ . Should things really become serious it would be better to amalgamate our stocks, store them collectively, guard them 24/7 with our own congregation and that way we make sure that the infirm, aged, families with small children are all looked after as well as can be. As for material wealth, well you can’t take it with you. Till then, breathe, tell the Gospel and trust the Lord with the end results.

I used to hide cash, in my private library …. 3000+ hardcover books … kind of difficult to sort through and find valuables and cash. A single hollowed out book, can hold pistols, magazines, jewelry, precious metals …. your average book, can hold paper cash …. I stored a few $100’s and $20’s in pages of different books, making my son or grandchildren have to look in my books rather than just give them away or trash them when I kick the bucket.

Now a 800+ pound safe gets all those duties …. I’m vulnerable to safe crackers … but how many of them are in my city? And a few bills might have remained in a book or two …….

Best article on this subject i’ve seen in a bit! Lively, thought provoking and well commented on. Having said that, there are a couple things i might add. “things” is obviously a general term, or “stuff” if you like that encompasses many different sizes and shapes. What’s great for a pistol is not workable for a rifle. I remember in the house that i grew up in pa had a board in the stairwell that had a tiny slim notch in it that just looked like a less than perfect corner cut but was actually a spot to insert a very tiny shim and that panel pulled out and let you access the above panel, which pulled out and gave you access to an area inside the floor joists. We would put our long guns, etc in between the floor joists when leaving out of town. And THAT is what it takes to have good hideys! Not necessarily in the floor, but ones that are NOT standard hiding spots. For small items, behind switch and outlet covers is an old one, but still good. Here’s why. How long do you think it would take a person to pull off EVERY switch and outlet cover in a typical 2 level home? I would call that one a medium-level hide against the random burglar. In the bottom compartment of your main breaker box is another medium-level security spot and it’s generally big enough for a pistol. I keep spare new breakers in mine. Inside the back of the washer or dryer is a pretty darn good one. Obviously, with any of those just mentioned you need to be aware of electricity and place items accordingly. Attic is actually a darn good one IF you have blown insulation in an unfinished attic. NOBODY roots through blown insulation unless they KNOW it’s there. Even police won’t dig into that unless it’s a murder investigation. Custom built doors, panels, shelves are likely the very best places as it’s very difficult and time consuming just to look for them. End of a hallway is one of the best custom built hides. If done properly it can also be just barely large enough for 2 or 3 children or smaller frame adults to hide in too. The theme to adopt is custom made. So there IS nobody else’s house that has one exactly like it. Makes it very difficult for a burglar to quickly locate your valuables. Having said that, either a burglar or authorities, given enough time, will find your hides and there are a very small percentage of individuals out there that can find 90% of them in an hour or less. But that’s a VERY small group. None of the places that i’ve just mentioned are locations that i keep anything hidden at my current home. However, i may or may not use some or any of those in the future. There are some fairly easy access locations that are capable of hiding fairly large items that i’ve not mentioned here for good reasons. If the police, for example, are searching through your house and it’s related to a murder or drug/gang activity they may take all day, or more and pull out all the interior walls, carpet, flooring, cut hollow doors apart, tear into ducting, take apart your attic, etc. BUT, they don’t do that when it’s even close to any sort of routine search. It takes a team of individuals that do just that to thoroughly search a home and they still may miss things, but it’s not likely. Related to safes, most burglars are NOT safe crackers. I mean full-size safes that they can’t move or carry off. Some few may be smart enough to drill holes, but unless they’re very experienced, an ex vault technician OR have a LOT of time on their hands, they won’t get in to it. While i have seen some full sized gun safes stolen by thieves that flopped, pushed or dragged it out of a house, usually doing massive damage along the way, and then loaded it into the back of a p/u for a cut apart session somewhere else, that’s not common and can be greatly minimized by carefully choosing the safes location and very securely anchoring it to the concrete. While that’s moving somewhat away from this article’s topic, it is related. The BEST hides are non conventional. Inside a couch is actually a pretty good idea. If a thief looks under it and then pulls the cushions out and doesn’t find anything, he moves on. Ideally, we’d all have a home vault, fully enclosed in reinforced concrete, big enough for the entire family and a neighbor/friend or 3 to fit in. With a small stack of bottled water and canned whatever food. That way it could double as a storm shelter as well. Preferably with a well hidden underground escape tunnel, in case of flood, fire or starvation, that ran to neighbors house or at least clear of the house and came up inside the shed. Doesn’t everybody want one of those? Definitely do-able, but pretty expensive and impossible to achieve if you rent or lease your home. And since NOBODY locks up every single item they own, the thieves are gonna get some items. And that’s a GOOD thing. Crackheads get frustrated when finding absolutely nothing, and sometimes just randomly anyway, destroy everthing they can smash or beat to pieces. But if you left them just a few pawn-shop-ready items they’ll be grabbin and heading OUT of your place to whichever pawn shop they usually use. Just my thought on the subject.

None of these places are where you hide stuff,,,,,,,, with a name like yours, I’m surprised you worry about posting such details here, it doesn’t seem to have a spot to search for information on the locations or other things on we, the posters.
I fully agree with much of what you say, particularly the “custom” places. As a remodeling contractor (semi-retired), I know about building in some of these “nooks and crannies”. But most typical homes don’t have a lot of locations that would not be pretty obvious to even a somewhat savvy individual. Ranch style homes, split levels, capes, colonials, many people besides me and real estate agents know all too well the design elements and room layouts, so it’s tricky finding spots to use for hiding stuff.
AND,,,,, if you have a relatively substantial amount of food/water you have to make your spot even larger.

LOVED your dad’s stairwell hidey hole, btw! THAT’S unconventional thinking, and the way we need to think!
And the pawn shop ready idea ain’t half bad, I just think there’s too much most of us have to try to keep the really valuable stuff so well hidden. And then there’s the issue of what’s the dividing line between preps and other valuables………
Good luck, I like how you think.

(we share last names, too, incidentally 🙂 )

It’s a meat-and-potatoes article. You just have to put lesser “treasures” or outright garbage where the looters look first. Hide your real valuables elsewhere – some place benign or undesirable.
The hungrier or more desperate they are, the more determined they will be, and they will look harder for what they want.

At 76 about all i need to do is put it away. Then I need a looter to come help I me find it. When I could get around more I had caches on the mountain. No more. My biggest cache still is knowledge and experience. I’ve spent years making tasty meals from what looked like an almost empty cabinet. I still forage, even here in high mountain desert. My weeds and native cacti are my greatest resources. Many of my pretty flowers are edibles too.

The points made in this article were so immediately obvious, I am trying to figure out just who it would be who might actually benefit from it.

If you live in a rural area there’s one place nobody looks. Heck, they probably won’t look even if you tell them where it is. Hint, it’s not for those with a sensitive nose.

Thats why I and my wife are proficient with firearms and big bore shotguns. The weapon and ammo are kept in an easy to get to spot while we are home or sleeping and i always carry on my person two fully loaded handguns. Go ahead and walk in my door uninvited and unannounced. I will pull the trigger first and ask questions after. Dead men cant talk. And i own a backhoe and there are plenty of woods close to me!

IF we had more citizens like Alan, we’d obviously have far less criminals! Good on you, Alan, for speaking up. If enough of us shot and KILLED really bad guys, they’d soon get the idea. Remember the wild west. Publicly hanging them in the gallows would surely give the criminal mind something to think about. You kill, YOU will be killed! Amen

We need cool heads and not fly off the handle. Do justice the true right way. Current suggestions will get us in jail than the dirt bag criminal with Soros DA’s today.

The old West has tales of wrongful hangings too. The old West street shootings in the movies didn’t happen like Hollyweed portrays for revenue action flicks. A lot of shootings had people getting shot in the back. Or surprise shootings at the dinner table, taking a dump in the outhouse or by a tree.

There is true justice, not the current multi-tiered legal system we have with the clowns in charge today. Hangings bring up a dark-side of the Civil War era. The Democrat liberals started the KKK and latter the Margret Sanger Eugenics. She helped the German Nazi’s with their WWII program. Which eventually became the Planned Parenthood criminal program in America. Yeah legalized baby murder so a twat can have sex and do another baby murder.

Then we have the Culture of Death; gay, lesbian no procreation couples, feminized guys who can’t compete against real men. But compete against women to win, sick weak dicks.
Will our American traditions reverse from what we have now?

We got the Death Culture in Washington DC swamp, the hair sniffer, the vp cackling hen who slept her way in politics. Open border for slave, sex illegals as throw aways after use. To the pedo’s, satanist, weirdo’s, cannibals in elitist gated communities, DC Swamp and Hollyweed.
The day of judgement is coming, that’s why they build their underground bomb shelters for. Not for a nuke but for other issues they have done against honest citizens.

When and if SHTF maybe people will respect other people’s physical and spiritual property, after a few criminals do get shot. But not by fool hardy hot heads.

Nope. No respect. Look at all the foreign nationals being bussed into our country. Busses full of contempt for our way of life. Add in a bit of hunger and even your unprepped friendly neighbors will DEMAND that you share with them. The time between shtf and martial law will be quite deadly. With martial law not being the end of the deadliness. Just the beginning of the executions.

If really bad SHTF, how would you get a doctor, nurse, engineer technician, botanist without all the thieves, and worthless on your “small farm property” for long term survival?

Too many Sheeple, people been voting for a one party all their lives. Time to vote the other way too. Both parties suck. But look at the useful idiots in the cities that vote for liberals and don’t see what happens. They have been dumb down a lot. The Covid shows how the unionized teachers public school don’t teach, don’t care. They care about their union retirement benefits.
Those who are awake not woke see there is a breaking point to America. What we do is up to us. The World is not worth saving only small parts will be saved. Not worried about a nuke war or surviving it. Nukes have always been a fear mongering tactic.

It’s the fear installed from the 1st Cold War era. The Open Southern Border invasion is more likely. Or seaport container ship troop and missile deployments are more possible. Along with the Cuban Chinese military seaports and missile technology. Just like the original Soviet Cuban missile crisis decades ago.
All American Chinese CCP cranes are electronically spying on cargo coming and going. Your home camera systems are being data based off shore servers for the CCP.
An people are worried about low life criminals. What about the white to secret major criminals we don’t see?
Those who don’t their history are doomed to repeat it, maybe worse this time around!

When you go by the CCTV signal light cameras, wave say hi!
We know we are under surveillance in a public and home hacked cameras.
Ring door cameras are part of the Chinese social credit system. Not yet in full lock down mode in America yet.
Keep buying all those security devices and digital virtual assistants that record your conversations.
Wait until AI is in full swing most people won’t have a chance, HA, HA!!!!!

These survival, prepper websites give us a list of what criminals should check first. Before ransacking the house these are great ideas for preppers too. Peppers may need some extra things, equipment in a SHTF world upside down. Many home maybe be abandoned by the bug routers going away from the cities.

Where I live they have been looting my place since i moved in and I have had to do many thing’s ,
Lights, Cameras . , Baracade , Lots of scots tape.
They do not like have to deal with tape, over locks , doors, Sticks in your windows, and get a good grad dog, Smart camera with a smart phone ,
And leave lights on if your going to be gone, And watch the place on your phone, This just saved me . With the smart phone I seen them drive right up to my deck , This was here in WIsconsin, And I was in Chicago , and it was after 12;00 am , I called the local police and they checked it out, With a smart phone and smart camera , You can send a voice they can hear you, and you can hear them. You can take there pictures, record them, on the spot, Best investment I ever made, , You have to have WI-FI for this to work , And the crooks never know when your watching, No mater how close you are or how far a way you are, You can see them , But they can not see you, . And if they speck You can hear every thing they say, You can then transfer this to and social media and let the world know who they are, Or use Google Earth to watch your home, , The last thing a crook wants known is who they are, and some times that crook knows you and you know them, . You would think small town are safer then city’s , Well folks i am here to tell you They are not, I also think in my own opinion They might even be worse , And courts yards, for mobile homes, I know, Small towns can be vary clicky , also, Now I know why people move to the outback’s of Alaska and shush places, Small towns They do not like the Idea you may have more then people living a round you, My advice, Never do your banking in the small town you live in, , Not all is kept privet . . And if you move to a small village , Take a year to see how this small village operates before you de side to join any of there clubs, , You may find that your glad you didn’t . . Most at this time . Are hard up and they want to fine a way in to your wallet, , At the bar, A club, A church, or a fund raiser, ect Or use you for there gain and not even give a thank you. Now this is what you call a few good people, And the people that run the village are the ones who control the money flow, A vary small group. and they like to play god. Control you, , I am vary happy , I keep to my self , One good friend is enough, , As Al Capon quoted, I would rather have four Qurter’s then a hundred Pennys . Thank you for reading my post

    MR Freeman.
Your right on point, You could of not said it better.
    Kendall, WIS,
The crooks came out of the wood work before I was fully moved in, . They don’t want you to have a dog,
The police tolled me .It the best thing you can have, . Knowing if they do try to break in ,There going to get there ass took off, and make sure that dog knows vary few people and do not give his name out, Word might get back to the crooks,

I unsealed a tub of Cappucino from Aldi’s. I put the cash in a ziplok, laid it on top of powder, resealed the paper, screwed the lid on, and it looked as if it was still sealed, like newly bought.
Since I have lots of foods in this storage room where it is kept, who’d consider going through every tub???
    Coffee, Tang, etc,

Looters are people like you or me. Everyone has ideas but mentioning what you would do takes the guess work out of it because the vary people reading these articals…….at least 50% will be unlucky enough to be prepared and will become what they are talking about.
The only way to protect is to bury your extra food and caches that only you and other real close people know.
And……..have enough people to take turns being up “armed” while rotating sleep.
