How to ‘Neighbor-Proof’ Your Property

How to ‘Neighbor-Proof’ Your Property

OPSEC is an important part of prepping. None of us want people showing up at our door, after a disaster strikes, expecting us to feed and take care of them.

It’s hard enough finding enough money to stockpile food and other essential supplies for our families, let alone thinking about how we’re going to feed others. While I believe in helping out those less fortunate than I, I’m not willing to risk shortening my children’s lives in order to do so.

So, we practice OPSEC; trying to keep our activities secret from family, friends, and neighbors. But let me ask you… do you really think you’ve succeeded? Can you honestly tell yourself that your OPSEC has been perfect enough that none of your neighbors have any idea that you’re a prepper? I don’t think so.

Even leaving out the inevitable “nosy neighbor” that everyone seems to have, it is highly likely that our neighbors will have a pretty good idea of what we are doing. They may not have put two and two together to get four, realizing that we are preppers; but they will realize that we are doing things that they are not.

When the time comes and they are in need, it won’t take long for them to come to the conclusion that we are likely to have what they are looking for.

I think it needs to bears mention that there will be many people jumping to those kinds of conclusions about people they know or who they have seen who aren’t preppers as well. Our housecleaner thinks that I’m the solution to every financial problem she has. I get at least one call a week, asking me for money.

How to ‘Neighbor-Proof’ Your Property

This is a reflection on today’s society, where people look to others to solve their problems, rather than seeking to take responsibility for those problems themselves.

What makes any of us think that it will be any different in the wake of a major disaster?

So, OPSEC isn’t enough. Yes, we should continue our efforts in OPSEC; but we shouldn’t allow ourselves to become complacent in the idea that our efforts in OPSEC will be enough. Rather, we need to make sure that our homes are “Neighbor proof” before the disaster hits.

Neighbor Proofing for Today

There are two basic parts of neighbor proofing out homes; those things we do to add to our OPSEC, helping to misdirect the attention of our neighbors and prevent them from figuring out what we’re doing. The second is the things we do to keep them out of our homes, once the disaster strikes.

We all know to keep our activities as hidden as possible, especially brining large quantities of food and other consumable supplies into our homes. But there are always things that can’t be hidden well, such as rainwater catchment and vegetable gardens. What do we do about those? They can’t very well be hidden.

The best solution for these highly-visible items is to develop a cover story for them. That means giving your neighbors some other reason for you having those items, so that they don’t think of them in terms of disasters.

How to ‘Neighbor-Proof’ Your PropertyYour vegetable garden, for example, could be because you don’t want to eat GMO produce. The rainwater catchment is part of that, because you read a gardening article online, which stated that you shouldn’t water your garden with chlorinated water.

Related: How to Start a Survival Garden From Scratch

That bug-out-vehicle sitting in your driveway is because you use it for hunting or your family likes going “crawling” (off-road in a four-wheel-drive) on the weekends.

Solar panels are probably the easiest thing to explain away, as many people who aren’t preppers are installing them so that they can “reduce their carbon footprint.”

Neighbor Proofing for After a Disaster

No matter how well you hide things and how well you redirect your neighbors’ interest in your garden and rainwater capture system, they’re likely to remember them when they are short on food and water.

The problem then becomes keeping them from hopping the fence to get what they need, leaving you without it.

Start with Your Backyard

You might think that building a good privacy fence around your backyard is a good idea. However, here is why you should NEVER put a tall fence around your house. This small mistake could actually ruin everything for you.

In Mexico, they use cement blocks to build many of their fences and embed broken glass in the mortar at the top to help discourage thieves from climbing over. That qualifies as a “booby trap” and is therefore illegal here in the United States. Any such thing would have to be natural, so that it wouldn’t be readily identifiable as something intentionally done to hurt people. In other words – cactus.

How to ‘Neighbor-Proof’ Your PropertyIt seems to me that the ideal place to plant a cactus garden in most backyards is all along the fence, reaching out about three feet.

After all, we don’t want to put it where our children might be playing, so putting it along the fence is a way of protecting our children.

Just to be sure, put some sort of low border, say a foot high secondary fence, in front of the cactus garden. That will keep the children’s toys from accidentally going into the cacti.

Is that a foolproof solution? No. But it will discourage people. Another line of cacti, planted around the garden, can help to discourage anyone trying to steal your produce. You can explain that away as something to keep the pets out of the garden.

Granted, any passive defensive measures are limited. You will also need to patrol your yard or post someone as guard. Constant vigilance will be necessary to keep those neighbors away.

This doesn’t mean that the guard can’t be doing other activities as well. But if you don’t have anything that needs to be done in the yard, such as cooking or washing clothes, then someone will either have to be there, acting as guard or be posted in a window where they can see anything happening outside. This will be necessary day and night.

Don’t Let Them See

outdoor cookingThe next big concern is keeping neighbors from seeing how you are living. If they are able to see that you are living better than they are, it will give them reason to try harder to get what you have. This not only requires hiding things from their sight; but also hiding smells, especially the smell of food cooking.

⇒ The 5 Ways to Cook When SHTF Without Attracting Attention

You need to do something with your windows, which will make it more or less impossible to see through. One possibility is blackout curtains. The problem there, is that while they will keep light from escaping, they will also keep light from getting in. It is better to use something that will allow light in, while still blocking the window enough that people can’t see in.

Several layers of sheer curtains can do this; as well as tinting the windows or installing sun shade screens. Another option is to coat the inside of the windows with a textured, clear adhesive film that breaks up the image, while still allowing light through.

Secure Doors and Windows

The normal security measures used for doors and windows are essentially useless during a time of crisis. The locks we use are designed more to discourage those who don’t want to make noise and attract the police. Kicking locked doors open or throwing a rock through a glass window are noisy activities; bound to attract attention and a call to the police.

Your average deadbolt is all but useless during such a time, because it only goes into a ¾” thick pine door frame. A good kick will break that deadbolt out through the door frame, as if it wasn’t even there.

secure doorA stronger door frame or one that is reinforced with a security striker plate is necessary, so that the deadbolt can’t break though.

Go for one of the longer security striker plates. Install it with 3” long screws, so that they will go through the door frame and well into the 2×4 studs behind.

A secondary security system for the doors, like placing a bar over the door, like they did for the gate of medieval castles, is great as well. As with the security striker plate, make sure that the brackets for the bar are well anchored to the studs in the wall. If you can’t do that, then a door prop, that goes under the doorknob, bracing against the floor is a good idea.

Windows are even harder to secure than doors, because they are made of glass. One option is to cover them with plywood, like people do for hurricanes.

Unfortunately, that also blocks light out. A better option is to install burglar bars over the windows. That’s secure.

If you don’t like that, then install window security film on the inside of the windows. That won’t prevent people from breaking the window to get in; but if they do, they’ll have to break the glass out, all the way around the perimeter.

Be Sure to Carry

The best protection for your home is to make it known that trying to enter into your home would be dangerous. You don’t need to say anything to anyone in order to do that; you just need to go around armed.

If neighbors see you and your family going about your work of survival, with guns on your hips and in your hands, it won’t take them long to realize that breaking into your home could be very dangerous.

While that won’t stop them from knocking on your door, asking for handouts, it will at least make sure they don’t try sneaking in through a window.

Look at Maui as what the neighbors are doing with their properties after a fire as that can happen to us. Whether we are in the city or in the country.

Some people here say prepping and political events don’t mix but they do mix. the 20th century survivalist started with president Carter’s gas shortage, supply chains for food, money. The survivalist bought gold, silver, tools and food.

Modern Marxist school texts have made part of prepping what it is today, we are repeating history again with Bidenomics.

Friends in California keep voting for socialist like governor Newsom. The politics of Demoncrats also cause support to illegals, a $60 plus debit rabbit hole. So since Biden came into tyrancy, the open border policy has caused financial havoc in their State.
Now families have too high gas, taxes and medical costs to support the illegals there.
That local family’s Statewide rely on food donation centers for food to feed their families. That is including the military families living off base in local communities.
What mess people with public school union indoctrination does to our economy and political structure.
That is why we are struggling with today’s social ills and foriegn religion assets causing havoc in campus and street demonstrations. These people will eventually start ramping up benevolent activities to major violent protests.
Blue State politicians are chipping away at the Second Amendment so Americans will be defenseless to fight back the opposition. While the wealthy have armed bodyguards and gated communities to fall back on, we don’t.

        Try $34 Trillion National Debit!
That’s a hole that is mathematically impossible to get out of, EVER!
The only solution is to inflate it out of existence and start over with some other kind of money, probably something crypto-related.
But don’t think for a New York minute that the Federal Reserve (a Privately held European Bank) will let you get away with Bitcoin or some other crypto that is out of their control!
Whatever comes out to replace the dollar doesn’t matter, you will be just as bad off as we are now.
That is why prepping is critical to our survival.

Just get the paper dollar placed back to the gold standard, that easy.

We taxpayers never volunteered to barrow money from China or any other country. The politicians did this on their own stupidity. We taxpayers were a sleep at the driver’s seat.

Unless you live in Fort Knox bank with armed guards 24/7, they will come. All those safety hints are good. These barriers are temporary, it slows down the marauders to give families or people to get away or defend themselves with their limited ammo supplies.
Mantraps might work but you have to clean up the stinking mess left behind.
Most survival experts are not combat proven, they just re-post hearsay of other fake experts. Experience is the best knowledge and gut feelings to guide us beyond Bidenomics. We are in danger of loosing America leading to the next election.
There are bomb threats lately at State capitol buildings, these religious foreigners protesting Israel can turn bloody as the open border lets them freely roam America.

    Can it happen today?

The Mexican drug cartels are not the only drug an sex traffickers. In South America to the American Southern Border Hamas and Hezbollah have networks pushing drugs like fentanyl into the USA.

What else is happening with the Chinese nationals, Russians, N.K., Iranians crossing the Biden’s open Southern Border? Biden is funding our adversaries such as Iran.
These illegals are being bused and air flights to the nations interior, when will we have the Pearl Harbor as the wealthy hide in their underground shelters.
When is it we go over the limit to sustain this Manchurian Candidate’ psychopathic illegal nightmare?

China tells proxy Putin how to manipulate the Ukraine War. Putin tells Iran to get proxies Hamas and Hezbollah to fight Israel with arms supplied by Iran, N.K. and Biden’s humanity aid to Gaza. That gets funneled back to the proxies. Biden let’s our overseas troops get injured while not fighting back.

Many of you voted for Biden to become a one hit wonder president, leads from behind, than lead in front, a total joke. Biden secures foreign countries borders and leave our American borders unprotected to our enemies.
Not only that we have diseased illegals carrying sickness just like the Chinese nationals flying on planes to several countries spreading COVID.
Think of the African illegals spreading potential EBOLA, It is your Bidenomics America for a while.

Preppers worry about the coming SHTF, what happens after when we get back to a “new normal,” after a minor SHTF, will neighborhood relations be the same? If a looting neighbor gets shot will the legal prosecute that neighbor under existing laws or declare the situation self defense. We will still have the liberal, indoctrinated jerks hand wringing, clutching their pearl necklaces too.

Will we return back to the Old West society, hard work and traditional education from the Marxism we have today?

Cacti are great dissuaders, and property line defenders. However, they don’t thrive in many northern climates, and take a decade, or more, to grow into maturity. Roses are perhaps a better alternative, especialy the climbing varieties. Hedgerows of brambles (mesquites, cat’s claw, hawthorn, other thorny fast growing vines) bent and intertwined along a fence or property line will still take many years to mature. If you havent alredy started these natural fortifications, it may be too late, and your monies should probably be put toward other protective devices, and the associated necessities in fairly large quantities. This will definetely give you more ‘Bang for your Buck’ so to speak… The ‘racking sound’ of one such device serves as an internationally understood symbol of an eminent threat to body, and life.

An alternative plant to intertwine into a fence that does grow faster than most is wild blackberries. We have had them grow completely up and intertwine through a fence in 2 growing seasons where we live near the Canadian border.
they are a tough plant whose thorns are a deterrent to man and animals. As an added bonus they produce edible berries that your neighbor can pick also but would have second thoughts about trying to come through.

I did this as well, but with a slight twist, I have some edible flowering plants and flowering bushes at the front fence and then about 3 feet back I have a “trellis” of 6 ft tall chain link with Evergreen blackberry (a local wild) code enforcement see’s it as a “trellis” not a fence and it screens /hides the yard very nicely. Because it runs East/West, I plant a row of lettuces, radish, etc to take advantage of the shade (extends the lettuce & radish season about 3-4 weeks)

@GWLong: have you ever SEEN blackberries? They grow incredibly quickly, are very difficult to kill and even if you can cut them, unless you burn the cuttings, they will grow back every place the branch was cut making hundreds of little baby blackberries. They will grow under lots of weather conditions. Great fruit, too.

Fight to the death may be the initial way but I pray not. A restructuring of society is the ideal. City market places for sales or bartering. Some kind of education for children will be needed if it all disintegrates.
War and socialism, mixed with or not, communism all will create new norms with time. Some knew some totalitarian dictatorships. Thinking about all that gives me a headache. Life is already insanity on this ball of dirt. Prices going out of sight. Cancel culture cruelty. Incomes for most evaporating or unable to keep up with inflation. Medical care advances but those with a bit above poverty income and below wealthy can’t access much of it. Government planning what we can drive or not. What power we can or can’t cook or heat with. Mandating a life only the wealthy can live. Am I depressed? No. Just throughly disgusted.
I suppose I’m expected to quietly evaporate, Die quietly, Or stay hidden till dead. That isn’t this crazy old lady! I would search out the loudest bull horn and show up on the steps of government to loudly protest…. Maybe.
More likely I’d Lay low, forage the wild weed patch I’ve planted, raise my mostly quiet rabbits, live at home as long as possible then hope to end up where I can make a somewhat hidden permenant hovel near water.
One day soon enough I’ll cease breathing and someone or something can do what they will with my carcase. I’ll be at peace with my maker and I’ll no longer care about idiots on this ball of dirt and water. I’m Looking forward to better things ahead.

My personal property is slowly becoming enclosed with cacti. Yes I planted most of it. I’m now in a new location pretty much out of sight on a 10 acre rocky hillside. Rough terrain and a great view from here. A new orchard is planted with over100 fruit trees, nut bushes, berry bushes and vines. I pretty much need to water along for the next year or two while they are establishing and growing. Many things will start bearing fruits in a limited way this coming year. Berries should have decent harvests this coming year and so should the now 3 year old asparagus. 200 new strawberry plant should be delivered in early spring and part will bear their first year and the rest by the second year. The fruit trees will all be bear in two years or less as they were mostly trees already around 6’-7’ tall and several years old. The majority are semi dwarf so bear earlier than larger trees. Plenty of fruit for the whole neighborhood. My choice to trade, sell, or give away. But totally out of sight of everyone not on this property.

Better yet get all the neighbors on board and work together as a team. More hands to do the work means less work for you. Everyone sharing a little of what they have will go a long way towards survival. Of course, not everyone will be on board, but you have to weed them out. Better to have a support system of help rather than blocking them all out.

I was a teen champion archer. Used to shoot x a 60lb fiberglass long bow and old. Fashioned laminated wood recurve 90 lb. Head it closer to 80 so down to 2, 40 fiberglass bows. I started shootings when I was 14. Keeping that up as well but don’t enjoy the 9 mil any more. Might change the trigger to make it kinder to these old hands. I Have many easier things to practice with. And an 80 lb cross bow to play with.
I have less than a handful of trusted friends I train and would share with. They only know what I choose to share but not because I can trust them. I choose to err on the side of caution. I’m far enough away from neighbors they aren’t aware of my 18 chickens which includes 4 roosters that all now crow. Three are in line for a cook pot. Broody hens do me the favor of raising cute chicks. I have yet to use my incubator that will hold 24 eggs or the one that holds 48 eggs. I’m considering ordering quail eggs to incubate in the spring. Small quail are mature and lay eggs and breed at 5 weeks. They eat little and are quiet and take up little space. I find them interesting. But they don’t often hatch their own eggs. My chickens pretty much can forage bugs and green stuff and will return by dark. Not sure I want to turn them that free. There is a separately fenced area in their pen where I plan to grow fresh food for them. The coop can house a few more or a bank of cages for quail on one side. Quail may win out and get that corner. Rabbits also live in be cages in the coop. The ones I have now seem to prefer being part of a group together. That makes it easy.
I’m old enough to look for easy. I still read awhile each day and teach friends and family a few hours two or three times a week. My younger son and I teach newbies pressure canning and bread making. He good. I treat tracking and all the family can teach multiple skills. You’d be surprised what can be crocheted or knitted and for what. Simple tools anyone could make are popular.
But no one comes to my home except close family and two friends. Some know my old property but the new place- most have no idea it exists. And my old neighbors only know I patrol that property armed, after dark, often, but not on a set schedule. Home on all solar power has lights off and on the same as when I lived there. I switch out vehicles but something is always there. I’m seen there in daylight often.
If I work in my garden here at the new place only one person sees or hears me. I like that. Just enough for safety and no more.

Everyone nationality knows what the problems are, but lack the national will and courage to fix them. By the same token, who among us is really ready to defend to the death if necessary? Please think about your will and resolve…the psychological mindset, you may need when decision time is 2 seconds or less. It’s a huge step. Your life will never be the same. Either it will be over or you’ll have to live with it forever. I have been there. You can be the best shot in every 3 gun compilation, but….

It is NOT still our America and anyone who thinks so has not a shred of common sense to see that obvious fact. The facts that prove that are all around us every single day. The only reason we get any rulings in our favor or there are times where they step back is to keep us in line while they tie up loose ends. There is a lot of talk in congressional hearings, but the enemy has impunity from their treason and that is enough right there to know, the USA has already fallen. The enemy owns over 80% of the worldwide assets, prints our money, steals trillions from underneath our noses and no one even gets a slap on the wrist for it.

The army of illegals coming from over seas will fill our army ranks so that they will gladly shoot Americans when the lock downs come in the form of martial law in an all out coup. Not just a soft election fraud coup. It’s happening all over the world right now and they are saving America for last. No one will fund our fight because they’ll be busy fighting their own.

In the 50s my Aunt and her son were kicked out of Cuba when Castro took over. They started a lumber company and built a stone building that would resist a near nuclear blast. They started a community whereas everyone would have to be proficient in two areas. Bunkers were in the basement along with stores. They distrusted the government with a passion even though they were conservatives. They were honest and loving, but I don’t doubt that they would shoot you when SHTF and you tried to steal from them. I was family and still never knew their associates. Now they’ve passed away and I wish I could be a part of that group.

Vende no Brasil. Busque no google o fogão ECOGRILL e Churrasqueira para fogão polida.
    Espero ter ajudado.

      Translation to English:
It’s easy to have no smell in your food, don’t sauté or fry anything, always use water or some sauce and keep the pan closed. Research that you will find pots and stoves 2 burners with 2 mugs underneath to put alcohol, with a griddle and lid to avoid smell. There is also a pan that goes on the stove with water at the bottom that can grill meat without emitting any smell. It sells in Brazil. Search on google for the ECOGRILL stove and Barbecue for polished stove. Hope I helped

      Good suggestion
Thank you Rosana for your post! GRACIOUS!

    What I see happening,
Is Biden want to turn the united states in to a 3rd world country.
Destroy every thing this country stand for,
Total control of our every movement .
And totally turn this country in to Communism and Socialist .
    Now ask you selves ,
Is this the future or is he working on staring a war on American soil .
With all of them crossing our southern Boarder,
And Arming them once they get enough of them in to our country,
So is the man in charge , an American or promoting Communism .
American are buying Guns and amo
I was tolled by one store that its sold as fast as they restock .
The American people are not dumb,
There preparing for what might be to come.
There not take our country a way from us,
And I hope the men in the military are on the American people ‘s
    side if this comes down,
Biden is not what he appears to be , , He wants this country to Fall.

Yes and there are stupid liberals who hang on his every word.
Believe it or not there are some illegals that are more patriotic than these liberals in America.
Unfortunately the wide open southern border does not help our America in processing legal immigrants. We are being invaded, floods of unsustainable welfare economic cheats than serious asylum tragedies.
Bidenomics drains our country of energy, freedom the First and Second Amendments for Marxism ideology that Obama started.

Ask Biden, Newsom and Michell Obama who are their real bosses, China’s president XI or the American Taxpayers?
The American taxpayers must clean house in this 2024 presidential election or submit to failure, our choice.

It would be nice if all my neighbors talked to each other … and all were preppers … but with almost no natural disasters, floods, tornadoes, earth quakes, etc … here in the desert … the only active preppers and watching our government turn this country to mush. So over a square mile around my home, I think there are maybe 3 or 4. people who even know I possess a firearm.

When I go out shooting, I load my vehicle only in my garage, or under cover of darkness. I’ve even paid extra to have some things, delivered after dark, or in the middle of the day … (if not arriving incognito (such as a gun safe),

I prefer my house dark, drapes always closed, and even a aluminum foil lined .. sheets of foam, insulation, covering my windows … so not only does light not come into my home, but curious eyes don’t either. And I’ve lived that way, for 20+ years. I am an outgoing person, friendly, but my home is my castle, and no one’s business. My son, and one friend, are the only people who have ever been inside my home … and I like it that way.

The downside, is I haven’t a village, for survival … depending on myself … but I can prep or not prep … and it is no one’s business but mine.

    Bottom Line is :
really depends on your relationships and built network of friends and values of those friends
    alliance or enemy
unity driven or selfish , narciscistic driven
what are the values of those in your community
as we see the day approaching , you will see the decay of values , and consciencious
as people get more discusted with those who lead, are in charge and have no value
you will see decay of values
as the bible say s everyone did what was right in thier own eyes
the attitude of get all for self , life of today , no tommorrow , no God , this is why
When there is no hope , there is dispare
YOU MUST PRAY, BELIEVE , TRUST IN A SUPREME GOD WHO IS JUST
REWARDS THOSE WHO OBEY HIM , TRUST HIM , BELIEVE HIM , FOLLOW HIS TEN COMMANDMENTS
otherwise your no better than the animals or dead walking , like the leadership today
rich , lazy , sloths who only care about fulfilling thier lust , perversion , craving s for more
not one house , ten , not one car ten , not one of anything , jet setting around the world while they tell you of an energy crisis , global liars of the oligarky
while you go with out and have less
they bring in the invasion to help bring down your economy
will you live , they tell you not to plant , not to drive , not to use you energy

Save the planet , not the people
and the biggest LIE is they really believe they will go to heaven and be rewarded LIE

As far as windows and doors go, you can have hurricane proof windows and doors installed. There are many different options you can get with them but some even come with mini blinds built into them. My front door is made from what looks like stained/frosted glass. Is 150 mph proof. Made like the front windshield of a vehicle. Try to get through them and it will take a man and a boy some time. By that time…
    Stay safe and God Bless…

Run a 1/8″ cable from fence post to fence post at the top. And have that going through PVC pipe. It not only keep animals out of your yard but nosy neighbors that feel a need to jump the fence.

Have at least 2 of everything. Example: 2 good watch dogs. 2 firearms (plenty ammo for both). 2 of every garden tool you will need and use. Etc. Etc.

2 people can do much more than one. Unfortunately, this isn’t possible for everyone. Just do the best you can with what you got.

The article and its advice is specific to suburban locations. Living rural is much different and is less about “extra prepping” and more about an everyday lifestyle. I get a chuckle on the “prepping” guidance that goes straight to bunkers and bullets. If you live in a place where you need to build a tall fence, fortify the doors and windows beyond normal security, and make a show of being an armed badass, then you may want to first reconsider where you live. During tough times and even SHTF worst case I am comfortable with my neighbors and as a community we will do well because this is our normal life. We have already removed bad people from our area and the great migrating herd of unprepared will almost all be dead on the road long before they get to us. If you are prepping to be well armed and locked in a box with your stuff good for you but that does not seem to be a great nor happy life plan to me.
