Since the conflict in Ukraine began, it feels like many preppers have started worrying less about the risk of an EMP strike. Nuclear war has taken center stage again, and in comparison, something like an electromagnetic pulse might seem too abstract to matter. But ignoring the EMP threat is a mistake we can’t afford to make.
The Nationwide Impact of an EMP Strike
Even in a large-scale nuclear exchange, most parts of the country wouldn’t be hit directly. Those near missile bases or strategic targets might face radioactive fallout, but with the right supplies, shelter, and discipline, that’s something a prepper can survive.
We’ve already talked here on the blog about nuclear attacks and what you need to withstand them. Protective clothing, a Geiger counter, iodine tablets, vitamin E, or calcium supplements are just a few examples of what you should stockpile to be ready for a nuclear attack. Of course, you shouldn’t ignore the severity of the consequences of such an event, but…
An EMP strike would affect the entire country at once. The power grid would collapse, communications would go silent, and the systems that control utilities like water, gas, and sewerage would fail instantly. Most vehicles could stop working. Railroads and air travel would grind to a halt. With so much of modern life running on electricity and internet-connected systems, society would be paralyzed in an instant.

The Real Threat: Rogue States and EMP Strategy
The threat of an EMP attack hasn’t gone away. Countries like North Korea might not stand a chance in a conventional nuclear war, but they could believe that a single high-altitude EMP strike would level the playing field.
Without direct deaths or destroyed cities, would the U.S. president retaliate with full force? Maybe. Maybe not. And a regime like Kim Jong-un’s might be willing to take that gamble.
EMP Effects from Traditional Nuclear War
Even in a nuclear war scenario, EMP bursts are still a major concern. Airburst warheads, which are common in strategic arsenals, generate powerful electromagnetic pulses.
A country like Russia could easily include high-altitude EMP detonations in its first wave, ensuring that anything not destroyed by explosions would still be rendered useless by the pulse.
That’s why it’s crucial for preppers to keep EMP attack scenarios in mind, even while focusing on more conventional nuclear threats.
How to Prepare for an EMP Strike
To survive the aftermath of an EMP attack, basic prepping isn’t optional. It’s essential. Here is a checklist that every prepper who wants to survive an EMP Strike should consider:
- Long-term food and water storage – because supply chains will break down overnight.
- The ability to live off-grid – essential, since the electric grid will be non-functional.
- Medical supplies at home – they’ll be vital, as hospitals won’t be operating. I have a very important tip for you. The authors of The Home Doctor show you how you can stockpile the 4 most important antibiotics legally, without a prescription. From the same book, you can also learn many other valuable things that will help you prepare for an EMP attack.
- Older, low-tech tools – these will be your best allies.
- Flashlights with bulbs instead of LEDs – they are more likely to survive.
- Alkaline batteries – these are a reliable backup to rechargeables, since most chargers contain vulnerable electronics.
- Manual tools like a brace and bit – they may be slower, but they’re immune to EMP and always ready to work.
You should also consider protecting some essential electronics in Faraday cages. A tablet loaded with survival manuals, maps, and reference guides can be extremely valuable, but only if it survives. Store it, along with a charger and power banks, in a properly sealed Faraday cage.
Print out important documents and keep physical copies in safe, waterproof containers. Your bugout bag should include duplicates. More importantly, create a solid emergency plan with your family. Think through different scenarios. What happens if the EMP hits while you’re at work or the kids are at school?
What to Do If an EMP Strike Seems Imminent
If tensions rise and a nuclear or EMP attack seems likely – perhaps due to government warnings or threats from rogue states – you’ll need to act fast. Time will be limited.
Start by contacting your family, trusted friends, or prepping group. Get everyone home as quickly as possible. If you’re out, withdraw cash from an ATM on the way. Once home, unplug every electronic device. Shut down everything you can, including lights. Cut off your home’s electric supply by throwing the circuit breakers and switching off the main connection.
Refrigerators and freezers should be wrapped in blankets to preserve cold temperatures longer. Move any portable electronics into Faraday cages, and ensure they’re sealed completely. If you don’t have enough cages, improvise by wrapping devices in cloth and several layers of aluminum foil, making sure there are no gaps. A metal trash can lined with towels and sealed around the lid with foil and tape can also work.
If you have gas service, turn it off if possible. Fill every container with water, and if time allows, fill the bathtub too. Get your candles, oil lamps, and lighters ready and place them somewhere easy to find in the dark. Don’t wait until the lights go out to start stumbling around. Avoid charging devices at the last minute. Anything plugged in when the pulse hits is likely to be destroyed instantly.
The Safest Solution To Protect Your Most Important Items From an EMP Attack
Of course, these makeshift solutions are more of a last resort, and they carry significant risk. If you find yourself completely unprepared, you can try them but don’t set your expectations too high. In a real, large-scale EMP attack, chances are they won’t offer sufficient protection.
However, there’s a far more reliable option out there. It’s called EMP Cloth, a specially engineered material designed to shield your most critical and vulnerable equipment from the devastating effects of an EMP attack.
When such an event strikes, your top priority will be to protect key assets like your vehicle, your backup power generator, and your HAM radio, which is essential for post-EMP communication. That’s exactly where EMP Cloth comes in offering you the following benefits:
- This protective fabric is manufactured using a unique, advanced material that effectively blocks all electromagnetic radiation.
- Anything you wrap in it gains a strong layer of EMP protection.
- Measuring 15 feet long and 3.5 feet wide, the cloth is large enough to fully cover most home generators – whether diesel, solar, gas, or propane.
- It offers up to 98% shielding, using materials that meet military-grade electromagnetic protection standards.`
- You can also use it to secure smaller but vital electronics like laptops, heaters, medical devices, or communication gear, keeping them safely stored in your garage or home.
- Need to protect larger items like a car or truck? Simply tape two or three cloths together, and you’ll create a barrier strong enough to shield even bigger equipment from the pulse.
Life After an EMP Attack
An EMP attack would essentially reboot civilization. Almost all modern technology would stop functioning. The knowledge and tools our ancestors used before electricity would once again become essential for daily life.
For most people, bugging in will be the safest option. If your home is stocked with food, water, alternative light and heat sources, and basic medical supplies, staying put keeps you off dangerous roads and close to your resources.
Learn all about this in Joel Lambert’s A Navy SEAL’s Bug-In Guide, where you’ll also discover valuable information on:
- Which types of food are worth stockpiling
- How to preserve food and water
- How to keep the power on when the grid goes down, and much more.
One thing you should prioritize above all else is securing your water supply. In the event of an EMP attack, access to clean water could disappear overnight if the grid goes offline. That’s why investing in a backpack-sized water generator is such a smart move. It can produce up to 40 gallons of pure water per day, and all it needs is thin air. No filters, wells, and no external power sources.
Preparing your home also means securing it properly. Reinforce your doors and windows, set up simple low-tech alarm systems, and develop a clear home defense plan in case law enforcement is no longer functioning. Truth is, you don’t need to wait for an EMP attack to secure your home. Just think about all the other threats: government raids, looters, desperate neighbors looking for your food. Focus on anti-looter strategies and tools and learn the most advanced home defense techniques to make sure your family stays safe, no matter what happens.
What about Bugging Out?
Still, you must be ready to bug out if staying home becomes impossible – whether due to violence, fire, disease, or resource scarcity. Life in the wild after an EMP attack will be brutal. With no GPS, no cell towers, and no emergency services, you’ll be completely on your own. In such a scenario, wilderness survival knowledge isn’t optional at all.
You need to know how to find and purify water, identify edible plants, trap small game, and build shelter from natural materials. Understanding how to start a fire in any condition, navigate without a map, and avoid natural dangers like hypothermia or predators can mean the difference between life and death.
A well-packed bugout bag is just the beginning. Your real advantage will be your skills, mindset, and adaptability. Reading about it and practicing these abilities in advance gives you a much higher chance of surviving in a grid-down world. Surviving an EMP attack means preparing for both staying put and escaping into the wild. Either way, the time to learn is now.
Final Thoughts
An EMP strike won’t give you a warning shot. When it happens, everything will stop in an instant. The unprepared will be left in the dark, confused and vulnerable. But those who take action now will have a real chance at surviving and even thriving in the aftermath.
Survival isn’t about fear, but about foresight. The food, water, tools, and knowledge you gather today could mean life or death tomorrow. Don’t wait for headlines or sirens. Prepare now, while the grid is still up, stores are still open, and you still have time on your side.

EMP Prevention Plan: Why Our Government Has Done Nothing
This all makes sense to me….my parents were kids during the Depression era .
But unlike them, I’m gluten and dairy intolerant. I’m also low income. Any advice for people like me? It would be greatly appreciated.
Place head between knees, kiss butt good bye.
find someone with a like mind to help and associate yourself with. Women are always handy and I’m not talking intimacy. If you live in a southern or safer state, you will do better. If a northern or liberal state, move fast.
Women are a statistical risk based on centuries of their behavior.
They LOVE to gossip.
Loose lips sink ships as it were.
Worse than them are kids.
Very good advice as usual. Over the past decade I have been prepping, I have recently come to the conclusion that a generator will be my most unpredictible power source due to noise and lack of fuel availability in a grid down situation. Both will needlessly cause attention to be drawn to my location. I will put my money and time in on a redundant solar system. One that is installed and one that is in stock and waiting to replace any components destroyed by the initial EMP. That will be my best option although I do have a commercial grade 14KW gas/NG generator too. I am a lot more savey now about where I put my time and money. Can’t have it all. Bible, Food, Water, Guns and ammo, Reliable long term power source, are my primary needs. After that everything else falls into place to make a comprehensive plan.
Solar panels are pretty easy to SEE, especially from a high vantage point.
Thieves and governments pretty much know who has them already.
Especially governments….
there will be no warning of an EMP. it will just happen. they are already in orbit around the earth by us and them so there won’t be an early warning.
plan acordingly.
Consider contacting the EMP SHIELD COMPANY. Their
shielding devices are designed for whole house protection
as well as vehicles and generators.
I suppose that if the grid is fried the whole house device
would be irrelevant. However your generator and vehicles
If operational would be a life saver.
Gasoline for the generator and vehicles should be treated
with PRI-G additive for extended shelf life.
Be advised that an operational generator or vehicle after
an EMP attack might make you a target.
I’m now to old and in too bad of health to think I could survive without modern things anymore. I might survive a couple of weeks with the preps I have but when it gets too bad I’ll take a easy way out. I stocked up on a lot of stuff when I was younger so maybe my kid and GF can survive a while,
On a well, so I have made well buckets and store a 500′ spool of rope. Manual tools for gardening, wood processing, and food preparation. Those oven racks will become parts for a food dehydrator, either over the wood stove, or in a non running vehicle (they get hot in the summer don’t they), leave the windows open just a tad on the shady side for some convection airflow. Seeds, always have enough for three crop plantings, I have had store bought seeds just not come up. I have been saving my OP heirloom seeds for a few years now and have grown a lot with the initial investment. Fruit trees, black walnut, filbert and beech, plenty of blackberries, wild cherries, and grape. Barring war violence, the like minded folks in our rural valley should do okay
good deal OLD PARA,
we are right their with you. a good well and buckets, thats some good water, and not grid dependant.
we have been planting the same seeds that we have saved from the garden for many years. they will grow when the store bought will not, something is happening with the store bought seed. its like they don’t want people to grow their own food anymore. is it part of the plan?, i don’t know. yep, save your own seed.
the best of luck to you
I agree with this way of living, when things go south, the modern easy life will be gone. Those who have actually studied and sorta practiced the new way of living will be the ones to survive, especially the real preppers. The biggest failure will be to condition oneself to protect your supplies, and to use deadly force to keep what’s yours, and not be a victim to the mobs and thieves.
When power fails, gas pumps won’t work. What good is protecting a vehicle when you don’t have access to fuel?
Sure you can stockpile fuel. Even that won’t last long.
And as soon as you start it up and go anywhere, you instantly become a big target.
Not only by thieves but by the GOVERNMENTS.
“An EMP Will Strike Right After This” … after *what* exactly?
“If tensions rise and a nuclear or EMP attack seems likely – perhaps due to government warnings or threats from rogue states – you’ll need to act fast. Time will be limited.” So an EMP will strike right after an official government warning, or the “final warning” from a rogue state. Got it. ;^)
“An EMP strike won’t give you a warning shot.” Well that’s not what the title implies!
(Yeah this article could use a bit more editing…)
Honestly who cares the death count if as predicted would be around 90% so honestly no matter what anyone does is of very little consequence! What everyone truly needs to do is prepare themselves for eternity heaven or hell it’s an individual choice.
