7 Things You Still Don’t Know About Martial Law

Most preppers, when thinking about Martial Law, envision a situation in which the military takes control, curfews are put in place, and certain civil liberties are suspended. And, while all of the above is true, it doesn’t tell the whole story.

Martial law is, by and large, poorly defined. I imagine this is to allow the military a great deal of freedom to respond to dynamically changing situations and also not to tie their hands too much.

You would, after all, not want to lose a war because you had to play by stupid rules that curtailed your freedom to act. On the other hand, this situation creates a lot of uncertainty for preppers to navigate.

In this article, we will look at aspects of martial law that you may not have considered but will need to think about if you want to flourish in a time of chaos and uncertainty.

Variation in Implementation

Martial law will not be implemented uniformly across the entire country. First, not all places will face the same challenges or pose the same threats. Some regions are far more likely to experience a swift and heavy-handed response due to their history of unrest or strategic importance.

If you’re in one of these high-risk areas, you need to be vigilant and take extra measures to safeguard your home and stockpile. In these red zones, even a small slip-up could attract unwanted attention. It’s not just about having supplies, but about keeping a low profile when things take a turn for the worse.

Martial law, when instituted in times of natural disaster, will differ significantly from martial law instituted as a result of civil unrest. Civil war will likely see the most fractious and dangerous implementation of martial law, as there is the real possibility that the military will fracture. The main challenge will be to know which factions are on your side, who is against you, and who is maintaining a neutral stance in favour of the rights of civilians and not supporting a specific ideology.

7 Things You Still Don’t Know About Martial LawIn 1906, when martial law was declared in San Francisco, the military imposed strict curfews. Still, it was also instrumental in delivering humanitarian aid.

On the one hand, they are your friend, but on the other, they incarcerate you if you walk the street after a certain time.

Legal Ambiguities and Civil Rights

The US Constitution does not explicitly define the exact parameters for martial law. This creates a complex and uncertain legal landscape. The Posse Comitatus Act restricts the use of military force for domestic law enforcement, but there are exceptions during martial law.

Consider the potential hazards of soldiers trained to fight in urban landscapes, who are hyped up on the danger of their current circumstances, needing to maintain civil order, and doing some of the work that the police usually do. If you can’t see the potential pitfalls, you need to find someone who can explain them.

The internment of Japanese Americans during WW2 was done without the formal declaration of martial law, which resulted in theoretical civil rights violations. Now, I fully appreciate the fact that many people in the current generation think that civil rights violations are almost impossible and that explaining to soldiers that they are overstepping their boundaries will cause them to listen to you.

Related: The Police and Military when SHTF – Friend or Armed Foe?

If you have been in the military and understand the chain of command and the seriousness with which soldiers carry out their orders, I must warn you that if you cross swords with them while they are carrying out orders, you will rue the day you thought that the soldiers were basically like cops, but in different uniforms.

The army is about dominating and controlling territory; it’s a different paradigm. Beware.

Economic Control

Under martial law, the government army may assume control over economic activities. For instance, if they need food or fuel, they will ask, but they will take whatever they need, irrespective of whether you consent. These powers can extend to stockpiles of goods and also essential goods.

7 Things You Still Don’t Know About Martial Law

You will need to hide what you have because it could be expropriated without compensation if they find it. Which is like legal theft, which you can do nothing about.

This may even extend to livestock. Let’s say you are a chicken farmer; under martial law, you could easily lose your entire flock or harvest of eggs. Make adequate arrangements if you see trouble brewing.

Preparedness goes beyond just stockpiling food and supplies; it’s about knowing how to keep them safe. That’s why I trust this guide—and you should too. It’s a must-have if you want to stay ahead during martial law.

This guide not only reveals what the military doesn’t want you to know about your rights when the government tightens its grip, but also provides detailed strategies to safeguard your hard-earned stockpile from confiscation. You’ll learn here how to stay off the government’s radar when scrutiny is at its peak. In uncertain times, this book could be the difference between remaining self-sufficient or losing everything you’ve worked to protect.

Impact on Communication

Martial law allows governments and the army to control information and the flow of information. Freedom of speech is out the window, and criticism of the powers that be could see you going to jail. Army jail is way different from normal civilian jail.

I recommend that you don’t say anything you are not willing to defend with your life. Standing up for the truth, as good as it may feel in the moment, could see you in jail and leave your family, father or motherless.

Also, be careful what you say on social media. With the advent of AI, there will be large-scale efforts to find opponents. The governments could even shut down certain social media outlets or the internet.

Keep in mind that even if you have internet, messenger services and social media, it may all just be a ploy to let unsuspecting individuals entrap themselves. The government can listen to everything you say. Under martial law, you can get into serious trouble for saying the wrong things.

Psychological Effects

7 Things You Still Don’t Know About Martial LawMartial law could have the purpose of subduing a population as its most basic intent. This can result in a lot of stress. Maybe you need to take up yoga, or read your Bible and pray a lot. However you feel you can best manage your stress, I highly recommend that you do something to keep your mind calm, focus on solutions, and avoid getting caught up in fear and anxiety.

Historical and Recent Examples

Examples from history confirm that martial law never goes down well with the local population. People are not used to being threatened and forced to comply.

Related: Hoarding These Items Might Get You Arrested

Also, you could make the mistake of thinking that, seeing it’s your country’s military, they are on your side and are basically like your friends.

Hurricane Catrina saw widespread allegations levelled at armed forces regarding civil rights abuses and the use of excessive force on civilian populations. Even if this is the case, you will have almost no recourse, and even if you get your day in court, chances are that nothing substantial will be done.

Opportunities and Adaptation

During the 1980s, martial law in Poland resulted in civilians finding new and innovative ways to organise resistance and oppose the oppressive regime of the time.

Innovation, bravery, and the forward-looking nature of the human spirit will observe and create opportunities that lead to adaptation to new circumstances.

But go about these things smartly. Remember that you need to be free and alive to help others and yourself.

Imagine a scenario where the rule of law collapses and urban centers become battlegrounds. When cities turn into powder kegs under martial law, heading to the wilderness might be your only shot at freedom; but only if you’re prepared to live off the land for the long haul.

This handbook goes beyond basic tips, offering deep insights into the forgotten techniques of our ancestors, who turned the wild into their home.

If you want to be truly self-reliant when the situation gets dire, make sure you have this in your gear. It’s the kind of resource that could make the difference between just surviving or living comfortably off the grid.

The Constitution has no provision for Federal Martial Law, but Presidents have felt free to pretend it’s in their power, thanks to Lincoln wiping his muddy boots on the 10th Amendment. They just declare a state of emergency and the Constitution is magically suspended. Think about what that means, Trump is going to declare a State of Emergency on Jan 20 2025 so he can use the army to round up illegals.

I have not heard anything about Trump wanting to declare a state of emergency at any time in the near future. I’m quite sure their’s lots of laws already on the books to take care of law breaking people crossing our borders. It’s a matter of enforcement. My opinion about the military is, he would rather focus on country’s wanting to destroy the U.S. than wasting it on dumb a.. gang banger’s . Besides..that job belongs to the person in charge of border enforcement. ……Kamala Harris. For the last four year’s. Leaving it for the Republican’s to mop up. Canada and Mexico better get ready to put on their big boy pants .

Well, Trump keeps saying the illegals are rapists, etc. But now there are going to be 3 S*XUAL ASSAULT MEN in government: Trump, Gaetz, and Hegseth. Seems to me we need to watch out for his appointees and himself too!

But all you who voted for him to bring down the economy… watch out, because when all those migrants are gone, who is going to pick your food? Huh? Huh? If its Americans, they will want 15 – 20 dollars an hour… and that my friends will drive up the cost of your food! Be careful what you vote for!

How is Kamala Harris in charge of border enforcement? That’s Sec HS Mayorkas. Trump didn’t manage much last time, but maybe the second time will be the charm. Maybe Kristi Noem will do better with border security. We’ll just have to see. Hmmm…looks like Trump is officially nominating Thomas Homan to the unofficial job as Border Czar. She’s been a governor, and he’s been acting director of ICE, so they have some skills here.

You should have asked a martial law survivor from New Orleans’ Hurricane Katrina.
You used all the legal points entirely.
There are MANY and none of which protect me or you.
Most importantly there are no curfews, it’s simply you can NOT be seen at all no time, or you will be shot on sight, no questions asked. (And don’t even think you’re going to ask questions or for help.)
The U.S. RESERVISTS (URBAN WARRIORS) drive MANY tanks ON TO your yard and push in your door with the TANK.
      THEY AINT KNOCKING!
They have X ray vision googles to see though EVERYTHING for guns, ect.
Only a metal building can block those vision googles. They have version 2nd version now..
IF YOU THINK YOU WILL JUST HAVE A SHOOT OUT,
I RECOMMEND HAVING TWO OR MORE TANKS AND MANY MORE BOMBS.
YALL REALLY HAVE NO IDEA REGARDING MARTIAL LAW.
      IT IS REAL HUNGER GAMES.
      PRAY & PREP.!

WOW do you really believe any of that cr*p you spew? Trump is not going to declare a state of emergency. There is a better chance of Biden doing it when Russia notches up the war in Ukraine and gets everyone involved.

There are so many executive orders that allow the gov to take anything from you if needed. It seems like just about every president in history added to this coffer of power under martial law. They don’t mention martial law specifically, but can now take anything they want from you if an emergency is declared. The latest directive allows the military to assist civilian law enforcement on US soil. Very few military members have actually read the Constitution they swore an oath to.

Trump and his advisors are saying they will declare a State of Emergency day one, the Federal version of martial law, so they can ignore Posse Comitatus and use the military to arrest illegals. Or anybody they want.

Just remember, A government that can take away your Constitutionally guaranteed rights in a crisis, is a government that will create a crisis whenever they feel the need to! COVID 19 was a perfect example of this on a small scale. Essentially, a dry run without actually declaring martial law!

Rule of thumb – Under Marshal Law, you OBEY AT GUNPOINT or else.
Constitution and your rights are suspended.
    You fall under military rule.

Forget obeying you BETTER NOT BE SEEN…. PERIOD!
INSTANT DEATH FROM US RESERVISTS IF SEEN.
That’s the real Martial Law orders. .
Y’all still don’t know what was done in New Orleans during Katrina.
ASK US WE KNOW WHAT THE U.S.RESERVISTS DID TO US.
      MURDER!
      GOOGLE US RESERVISTS!
Then and only then will you begin to understand.
MARTIAL LAW IS THE REAL HUNGER GAMES!
      FORGET OBEYING!
YOU BETTER PRAY AND RUN THE OTHER WAY.
YOU DO NOT HAVE ENOUGH TANKS OR BOBS TO PRETEND TO “PLAY.”
Nothing is MORE serious than Martial Law.
(WHERE’D YOU GET YOUR INFO ANYWAY?)

All i remember about New Orleans and Katrina is your levey’s broke flooding out the surrounding area and people going to high ground at your sport dome for selter and people commiting horrible crimes to each other then blaming it all on president Bush . Does that sound about right ?

I also recall that there was aot of radom gun fire in the surrounding area making it very dangerous for anyone wanting to help rescue the flood victims. Which resulted in a longer than normal wait for help. A very sad situation. As far as i know it was all Bush’s fault…Demarcate play book….Never let a crisis go to waste . They love it.

I swear i heard Fox News say that Biden Named Kamala as border czar as one of her duties as Vice President at the beginning of this current administration. Maybe she was expected to do nothing as far as border enforcement operations and strategies.Which is exactly what she did. Biden could put a stop to it today with just a signature ……as far as the leaky border is concerned. But Nooooooooooo! lets let in 20 million fruit pickers…i thought slavery ended after the Civil War. I guess not .

As far as the view some have, of deportation separating families, and the associated economic and emotional Doom and Gloom………. tough shit !!!

Anything worth fighting for (this country) is worth the [temporary] heartache and trauma of deportation. REMEMBER THIS: We (The People) did not force these illegal people to come into this country! They took advantage of a nation that has thrown its sovereignty out the window! They came here knowing, full well, that it was illegal! They did it to themselves!

Do you feel that sorry for American citizens that are experiencing the same type of hardships? NO, I don’t see it.

If YOU, yourself, break the law, you have to pay the consequences, right? Well, they should too!

Anyone who believes that this idea of mass deportation is deplorable, inhumane or socially unacceptable, had better get your head checked. It’s been depleted of common sense and reality!

Yes, prices will go up for a while. Boo hoo. It HAS to hurt a little to make it better! Grow up and THINK!
