Why You Should Never Throw Away Your Pill Bottles

Elizabeth Grant by Elizabeth Grant

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Medication is a drag, but the containers that your pills come in don’t have to go and add more plastic to the local landfill.

Nope, we have a bunch of different ideas on how to reuse, renew, and recycle your pill bottles. Let’s dive right in!

Sneaky Cash Holder

If you’re traveling to a questionable area or if you simply don’t want to carry around a wallet, you may consider using a prescription pill bottle to hide your cash instead.

I realize we live in a world where cash is becoming a less common commodity. While some people may see it more often than others, we’re certainly moving away from cash as a society.

However, now and then you’ll find yourself stuck with these musty old bills. There’s no way to replace them if you lose them and no way to prove they’re yours if someone snatches them from you.

What to do? Place a small curl of dark paper around the inside of your pill bottle and then go ahead and put your folded money in there. While thieves may steal a wallet, few will look twice at a pill bottle (unless it’s something that they can sell for a profit; try not to use bottles like that!).

Seed Storage

No matter how large or small, pill containers make an outstanding way to keep your seeds cool, clean, and under control.

Though I realize that many of us vacuum seal our seeds, many types of seeds really need air all around them to be at their best through the cooler weather and throughout storage.

During a crisis, you also won’t be able to get basic medicine, so you will have to rely on homemade remedies.

Make sure you keep these medicinal seeds in your stockpile, to grow your own herbs.

Travel Medication Container

Nobody wants to take a dozen medication bottles with them. If your medication is varied and different enough, you may be able to put it all in one bottle for the duration of your trip.

Let’s say that you take a blue, square pill, a beige pill of similar size and shape, and so on and so forth. So long as you won’t get your medication confused, feel free to toss the pill planner for the weekend.

⇒ What Happens When You Take Expired Medications

You can just put your medication all in one bottle and make sure you get your correct dosage by tapping one (or however many you’re supposed to take) of each into the lid of the container. This makes packing a snap.

Tiny First Aid Kit or Sewing Kit

pill bottle usesFor those on the go, it’s nice to have a band aid, a couple of alcohol wipes, and maybe some antibiotic ointment on-call just in case you happen to get into trouble. Goodness knows I do.

And when you’re getting that wound you’ll need to bandage, and you may need a sewing kit to repair your clothing, too.

We recommend using a pill bottle for just this task. Go ahead and find a pack full of quick-repair aid kit essentials.

Whether you’re using it as a sewing kit, a glasses repair kit, a you repair kit, or something else that you need fast and on the go, these pill bottles are made to be transported and pretty sturdy. Just try not to run over them with your truck or you’ll need a repair kit that functions for repairing kits.

Veterinary Goop Mixer

When you own a homestead with animals, you will inevitably have animals that get ill. That’s just part of life on the farm; someone is going to get sick and you’re going to be given a medication you have to treat them with.

That’s where your prescription bottles come in.

Speaking to you, directly, I cannot begin to count on all my fingers and toes the amount of times that I’ve been given a paste, a goop, a liquid and powder, or something like that, then told to mix it together and get it into the sick animal. How? They never tell you that. They just tell you to do it.

While pill bottles with a residue are not useful, clean ones offer a perfect place to mix up whatever gunk the vet has told you to treat your animal with.

Shake that nasty mess together to create a life-saving prescription for your pet. Snap your lid on and shake it like it’s a butter churn.  Better yet, your animal should get the dosage they need much easier because the wide mouth of the prescription bottle makes shoving a syringe in there a lot easier.

The caveat to this is that we don’t recommend you do this if the vet tells you not to. So check with your vet first.

What else have you used prescription pill bottles for rather than throwing them away? We have so many ideas that we couldn’t contain them all in this article.

What about you? We’d love to hear what you have to say. Leave us a comment down below and remember, if you can reuse something, there’s no reason to throw it away!

I use bottles like that at home and do a weeks worth of meds at a time but, if you are traveling it is not wise to take the meds out of their original bottles because you have your name and perscription and what is in the bottle. If for any reason you get stopped and checked, there could be trouble if you can’t prove what is in the bottle. Best to keep them in the original bottles,
Great idea for both money and seeds but not so much for mixed meds if you are traveling with those bottles…

This is true for prescriptions but vitamin and over the counter drugs also come in convenient containers which can be used as the article describes.

Daylight Savings: This weekend starts again?
California is the land fruits and nuts.
The California legal residents a few years ago voted to eliminate Daylight Savings, the bill got passed, but the liberals in charge decided to keep Daylight Savings.
It began as a thought with Ben Franklin and WWII is when the farmers needed to save money and time to farm their crops for one extra hour. As the story goes, congress passed the law. Why couldn’t the Demoncrat farmers just get up an hour extra on their own?
In today’s society no longer an agrarian society, or agricultural society, but a service computer society, most people work at home anymore.
We don’t need Daylight Savings any more.

DST has nothing to do with farmers and never has. Several countries, including Britain and Germany, implemented DST during World War I. The practice aimed to cut artificial lighting use so troops could conserve fuel for the war. 70 countries around the world “save daylight” every year. The US didn’t standardize the system until 1966, when it passed the Uniform Time Act. But not all states follow this. So sure blame the democrats. But at least try and get your facts correct.

        Ja,
We don’t really care, we don’t want daylight savings period. Mexico, I believe it’s Hawaii and Arizona are the only two states so far the do not do Daylight savings.
This nothing more than political control of how people are forced to live.

Saying how well we are doing and it’s because of you, I could only laugh and leave. Out and out bold faced lies and they do not care that we know it. Never never saw an administration as evil as this one.

If you are traveling internationally, having your prescriptions in their original containers is a must! The same goes for any supplements you might be taking. With everything going on today, it’s also wise to (1) take along a printed copy of your most recent doctor’s visit summary which summarizes your prescriptions, the over the counter supplements you are taking , and what conditions they are for, and (2) your most recent pharmacy prescription paperwork which reiterates the information on your prescription bottles. Remember, not all drugs legal here in the US are legal in other countries. You must do your homework before you go!

Stop the save the planet lie
Recycle as a money savings , and way of life , not to save the panet for the elites to control
End is near , Rapture is near , those left behind only get 3.5 years before they are totally controlled and have to comply
yes , recycling is great , and you should not just throw medicine bottles in the garbage
but , the lie is , landfills fill up with plastics, bottles, toxens and more
but because there is no money for the elites in recycled materials
if this were not so . then there would be major recycling plants , not major land fills or barges to hall out to see and dump in deeps of oceans
The lie , is that you will be saving for the next Gen. Z , While they propagandize the public with social TV , programming them to conform
Leaving out God , so they are acceptable to the affended ones or totally enept , idiots of society
That is why YOU should plan , reuse , set up your own plan s of saving your s , for your family , your estate
from the oligarky s new World Control order , leave s out Truth ,God, Holiness

We can see why there must be a separation of the State and religion as seen in the middle east. Where those religious leaders, the throat cutter religion controls the politics of the day.
Who in their right mind would bow several times a day to the East to pray in the modern world of the 21st century not the 15th century.

It was the Christian view that freed people from not being productive in life instead of bowing or kneeling. How in the heck can someone work 8 hours a day interrupting their work schedule for ingrained religious beliefs?
The current religious leaders in the middle east live a life of luxury in other areas away from the war areas. Those 90% Gaza residents actually did vote for Hamas terrorist to rule.
Just like the liberal Demoncrats vote for do nothing liberal politicians in our blue states of crime in America, go figure.

A lot of Christians have been brainwashed by organized religions as to what is real or not of GOD, Jesus and the holy spirit
The bible is a mixture of stories, the preachers jump around the stories to make a point. Anyone can jump around too to prove their point in an argument.
The truth is in the Western world our books read left to right from cover to cover. The story or information builds from the beginning to the end of the book.
When people read the bible they tend to skip around the chapters. So you can miss the what the previous chapter’s information has said.

My local trash company double the rates and nowI have 3-90 gal cans vs one. I’m required to sort trash recycles and green waste into separate containers. Easy enough right? The truck makes 3 trips now through the neighborhood but only one to the transfer station where they dump into one pile before taking it to the landfill. It’s a joke.

My wife and I have a rather large and growing collection of these and I have thought of a few more uses for them and a caveat when using them.

First the caveat: Remove/destroy/obliterate the label. Giving people the information on what maladies you may have from the drug description is not good op sec.

Now for a few more uses…

Storage for smaller pieces of hardware. Nuts, bolts, etc.

Storage for jewelry, such as what you have to take off for medical procedures. Wife carries one for just this reason.

Storage for concealing or carrying small amounts of ammunition. .50 BMG might be a bit too big for this.

    Coin sorting, storage, and concealment.

    Emergency fishing tackle.

If you are technically talented it would be possible to make a small radio receiver to fit in one of these. A “Big Ear” type of audio amplifier could be done as well, which might be useful for a number of applications.

    Copies of important personal documents.

Glue the cap to the bottom of a lawn ornament/random rock and put a key in the bottle and snap it on to the lid. Dig a small hole under where the ornament/random rock sits and put it back down. Obviously this can be used for more than keys.

If you have sewing skills it would be possible to make a shotgun shell type bandolier to hold a number of these which could be grabbed at a moments notice for whatever reason.

Let your imagination run wild!!!! These are cheap and easy items to experiment with.

1st. ending cash is horrible, no cash means the government can track every penny you make, every penny you spend, what you spend it on and where. And if they don’t like what you are purchasing, they can instantly freeze your money and you don’t get anything. no one with any common sense should want that. 2nd unless you like spending time in jail and money on lawyers, court costs and fines, you better keep ANY and ALL prescription medication in the original container

I have not commented on here yet, and will not go away from your site due to one mishap, but you are OKAY with cashless society??? Bro, you better do some serious research, and like others have said here, no more anything on the side, and EVERYTHING tracked.
That said, as An almost lifelong prepper I’d like to chime in on our uses for them:
    – Get caps that fit inside the bottle, depending on what size bottle they are, and drill a hole in said cap AND the bottom of the bottle. You can use cotton, dirt charcoal, etc, whatever suits your fancy and have near unlimited mini reusable on the go water filters.
    – If you have the kind with the blue tops, you can link two of them together for near endless uses, I have hooks and lures in one end, spar line in the other.
    – Camping use – put shampoo and conditioner in them (if you find it leaks, not all do, some saran wrap will help)
    – I had an older neighbor once, who glued velcro to a bunch of them, all different sizes, and had them on a belt. He worked all over the house, yard and garage and had plenty of nails and screws within reach, it was rather brilliant I must say.
    – I have an inexpensive spinner (lazy susan type, can find them literally anywhere) on my bench, have them all attached and use them for all manner of smaller tools that I don’t want in the drawers or hanging up, to fall down.
    – As an IT pro, I always run out of flash drive storage. Depending on the size, and width, you can fit 2-5 in some. * This is a nod to the mention of backed up documents. Always have these on hand, whether you encrypt them or not, for emergencies, bug out or inch. PNY lasts the longest, I have some from college that STILL work, I graduated in 2009. Kisgton are good, sandisk quality is not what it used to be, but do what you need to. You can find great deals on multi packs on amazon, 16-32 gb is perfect for documents- 64-256 for family photos – irreplaceable!
    – Spare fuses for you car – put in glove box
    – If you are a precious metals collector, taking them with you in certain scenarios is ideal, use the larger ones for rounds, smaller ones for fractionals -epic for barter etc!

i’m thinking if you’re carrying a pill bottle with dark paper or whatever to conceal contents is not a good idea. if you get robbed, and they make you empty your pockets. they will grab that bottle just to see what’s in it. pill bottles are good for somethings, i use them at home for storage, but not in my pockets or backpack. hard, can’t fold them, and most are not waterproof.

The comments about religion, cash or cashless, recycle and your reason are great conversations in person. Here it’s limited to make your point and send. Galveston and Galveston county have large active recycling centers. I agree with the, if it was important there would be more. Houston Harris county had several until it was learned they take it to a landfill but you feel good about yourself. They closed shortly after they were found out. Religion. It’s very easy to target people who practice their religion. The reason most Christian doctrine churches are cesspools is, they turned away from truth. Church needs to keep up with the times? Yeah well when times are opposed to the written word, people are wrong. You do not get God on your terms. It is on His terms.
Medicine bottles. I put hooks, worms and weights in one and carry with my hobo knob in my shoulder bag when I walk. They are very good for loose anything that fits. I told the pharmacist and she gave me a bag full of different sizes for free. I did make a hobo kit for her. That was funny. I catch fish on a smoothed out piece of cedar when people next to me with tricked out gear don’t. That causes good conversations! Back to religion. Religious leaders who were for control executed Jesus. If we want to be like Jesus, read the Bible and try your best to follow. Many churches today do not and will not teach what is written. Jesus spoke truth and was not popular at all but still truth. No cash is biblical. The ability to be cashless is already here but the leaders of non truth know it will be resisted. What to do… get rid of God.

Nancy Pelosi said it clearest. “You don’t need God. You have us democrats.”

    John 3:16 and 17.
    Have a fine day.

Recycle plastic and recycling in general is a big joke period.
There was a You Tube video from a guy that used three tracking devices on the recycle trash, two devices worked, a third one disabled.

The remaining recycled trash container shipments went from the USA to places in Europe. All these recyclable’s businesses made money sending and receiving the plastic trash. There were in his final look these plastic junk still sits in huge warehouses, nothing is done to date.

Recycle is some environmentalist feel good dream to save the planet.
Since plastic is a petroleum product these could be reversed engineered for heating or making it back into gas and oil through technology.

John Kerry and Al Gore can fund the plastic recycling to good use. Then ask for more carbon footprint taxes on us taxpayers, paying their worthless government jobs.

I worked several years in the recycling business. Plastic is one of the hardest to recycle as there so many different kinds which must be sorted. It is generally labor intensive so it is not profitable. Paper and cardboard are more recyclable as it is easier to bale and transport. Plastic is difficult to bale and generally requires special balers to do it.

Even liberals will admit to their closet friends organized religion in parts of the world do run in politics with not good results. Look at the Pope he lives high and mighty living in good surroundings collecting tons of money from worshipers.
The Catholic church still ships their pedophile priests around to parishes.
The other Christian religions have done the same with their pedophiles also.

I like spending “these musty old bills.” In a cashless society, every purchase is tracked and stored in a databank. In a cashless society, those who don’t have the traceable currency won’t be able to buy nor sell. In a cashless society, you will own nothing. The fact is If you can’t hold it in your hand, you don’t own it.

I disagree with your comment that going cashless is a good thing. By gong cashless the government can track every purchase we make and even block you from making purchases they don’t like so no guns or ammo. Even if the doctor calls you obese you can’t by ice cream for your grandkids. So, I oppose any form of a digital dollar it just opens the door to government overreach.

One of my medications comes in a small, narrow neck shaped bottle with a cotton “rope” in the neck.
I save the cotton, rub it in petroleum jelly and put in medium sized pill bottle to store as tinder with my ferro rod.

maybe keeping small sharp objects in your tackle or tool box, or a temporary place to hold small hardware when working on something. Or Use as tubes to store silver coins instead of paper roll wrappers….. But really, what hood do you live in where someone would take loose money instead of prescription drugs ? Steal stuff to get cash/ steal cash to buy drugs/ or just steal the drugs ?

Cashless is not good; means Control and end of freedom.
With ( that dirty) cash you can buy/sell freely, for not too long anymore.
The total cashless system is in place for the coming Antichrist the men of Sin.
Don’t fall to his deceiving agenda taking his mark on forehead or hand will be a deadly mistake.
    Cash is good.
    Sorry for incorrect English

Is it not possible anymore, to keep to the topic of articles like this instead of raging at each other about politics and religion? It is true, we are a divided nation and that makes us weak for our enemies, so let’s unite and keep to the topic on this platform. Small pill bottles are useful for many things like screws, needles, pins, spices (if sealed well), boullion cubes, tiny candies, fire-starter materials, jewellery items like earrings, rings, aromatic oils (if well sealed), paints for artists, inks, pen nibs for writers and calligraphers, beads for crafters etc. etc. and finally… be kind to each other… please!

I use the really big ones for small survival kits. It fits a small mylar blanket, a keychain LED light, a 3/8″ farro rod, a keychain knife/sparker, a fire tinder wick, a button compass, a few bandaids, a 400 cal bar and then I wrapped the bottle with paracord.
I think the person that mentioned that in today’s world that the prescription bottles would be taken FIRST. I think that’s true if you leave the labels on the bottles. I take the labels off.

Sadly I have become an old man and have RX to take. I throw the bottles away. I am so liberal there is no place for me in the Democratic party, if Trump was sane I might even vote for him. I have always believed recycling is a sop to the middle class, keep ’em consuming like mad and assuage their guilt with a bit of recycling and all the Biden lies about ending gas and oil drilling, bad news climate change deeks, we’re producing oil and gas at record rates…

We don’t have Rx bottles in the house as a general rule. When we have them available, I’ve used them to keep small items from getting lost in my purse. Paper clips, Band-Aids, earphones, eyeglass repair kits. I used to use 35mn plastic containers that film came in the same way. I’ve also used them to hold a few aspirin, vitamins and other supplements, or applicator-less tampons.

Don’t forget the washers, screws, nuts & bolts, etc. It’s a great way to sort the sizes too!

The next article (dated 3-8-24) doesn’t have a way to comment, what gives? Have some of the commenters gotten so out of hand that now no comments are allowed?

Look at the far left and Biden, they are slowly creeping pace to take away our GOD given rights at any cost. The wolves hide in sheeple clothing guarding the hen house.

Stuff it inside empty TP or paper towel rolls. Better than a plastic bottle, just cut what you need and light!

We repurpose pill bottles all the time, and have been for many years. Nothing new here. I am getting where I don’t even care about these articles. Cash is king. If you rely on “digital” you WILL get screwed! Have you had problems using your ATM/debit card? I have. I remember the first one I had back in the early 80s. I got called out on a job one night and stopped by the bank’s auto-teller. It was not working, so I went to the main branch. It wasn’t working either and kept my card. This was before “debit” cards. They only worked at teller machines. I will stick with folding money!

Especially if one is traveling outside the country. Try explaining that to the airport security in Turkey.
