Walk into a house built thirty or forty years ago, then walk into one today. The layout is different, the materials are different – but the biggest change is something you can’t see. It’s behind the walls, and it never turns off.
Old houses were simple. You turned on a light and it was there. You switched it off and it was gone. That was it.
However, your home works differently now. The router runs all day, chargers stay plugged in and appliances sit on standby. Current flows through your walls around the clock and your wiring was never designed for that.
That constant flow creates EMFs: energy fields that form wherever electricity moves. They’re invisible, they’re everywhere in your home, and researchers think this could harm your health in ways we are only beginning to understand.
This article presents the latest studies and the risks that come along with EMF exposure.
What are EMFs
EMFs, or electromagnetic fields, are invisible areas of energy that come from both natural sources and man-made devices. The Earth itself produces EMFs, and so does the sun, yet most of the exposure people deal with every day comes from things like power lines, Wi-Fi routers, cell phones, and household wiring inside the walls.
A common type is ELF, or extremely low frequency fields, which are created wherever electricity flows, such as in electrical wiring, appliances, and outlets. These fields quietly surround us all the time, especially indoors, where multiple sources combine and build up in ways most people never notice.
What’s Actually Creating EMFs in Your Home
It starts with the wiring, because it’s always on. Every time electricity moves through a wire, it creates a magnetic field around it. Your walls are full of those wires – they run through every room, often right behind where you sit or sleep.
The stronger the load on a circuit, the stronger the field. So, a wall carrying a heavy electrical load can expose you to more than a device sitting right next to you. Then there are your personal devices. Anything that’s plugged in creates an electric field, even when it’s off. Lamps, TVs, chargers, power strips. Turn the device on and it adds a magnetic field on top of that.
The War to Plunge America Into Darkness Has Already Begun. Are You Ready?
Wireless devices go even further: your router, your phone, your smart home gadgets, they all broadcast radiofrequency signals. But those signals don’t stay in one room – they go through walls, bounce around, and fill the whole space.
So at any given moment, you’re surrounded by low-frequency fields from your wiring and appliances, plus higher-frequency signals from everything wireless. All at the same time.
Is There Any Safe Place Inside Your Home?
Not every spot in your home exposes you equally.
Your bedroom is usually the most important one to think about. Main electrical circuits often run through the walls right where beds go. If your headboard is against that wall, you’re sleeping inches from active wiring every night.
Your workspace has the same problem. A desk against a wired wall, covered with a laptop, monitor, power strip, and chargers – that’s a lot of overlapping sources in a small area you sit in for hours.
And wherever your router is, that space gets the strongest wireless signal. Most people put it somewhere central, which usually means near where they spend the most time.
So, is there a safe space inside your home? Not really. EMFs travel through walls, signals fill entire floors, and your wiring runs everywhere. You can’t step outside of it inside your own home. Sleep is the clearest example. For six to eight hours, you’re not moving. The wiring is behind the wall and your phone is probably nearby. Meanwhile, signals are passing through the room – every single night.
What the Research Actually Says
Researchers have been studying EMFs for decades, and the picture they’re building isn’t pretty. Low-frequency EMFs from your wiring and appliances have been directly linked to serious health issues, including cancer.
The WHO’s own cancer research arm, the IARC, has officially classified EMFs as a carcinogenic risk. The same institution that tracks disease outbreaks and environmental hazards worldwide put it on the list and most people have no idea.
9 Out of 10 Americans Aren’t Ready for This Crisis. Are You One of Them?
But, studies show that wireless radiation is what should really concern you. Every time you receive a message or your router is running, that signal passes through your body. Researchers studying long-term exposure and proximity to devices are finding that the closer you are, and the longer you stay there, the worse it gets.
Even if some scientists won’t say it publicly, the continuous exposure accumulates. And what it’s accumulating inside you is something the industry has spent a lot of money making sure you don’t hear about.
When Your Electrical System Isn’t Running Clean
Most homes have wiring that’s decades old, running loads it was never designed for. And most probably you haven’t checked it in a while.
When everything works properly, the fields your wiring creates are predictable. But overload a circuit or let the voltage fluctuate and the whole thing starts behaving differently. The fields get messier, harder to predict and to avoid.
Generators and inverters make it worse. You hook one up in a hurry and now your entire house is running off a system that wasn’t set up right.
Everything is connected through the same wiring, so whatever’s wrong in one place moves through all of it.
This gets even worse in a crisis. On a normal day during the week you most probably have to leave for work, shopping or to visit a friend in a ton nearby. But during a crisis, that changes. You’re inside almost all the time. The same rooms, the same spots, day after day.
Knowing the risks, I started looking for a way to keep electricity in my prepping setup without drowning myself in EMFs. After a lot of research, I found that building a modular power plant in your own backyard after this model can cut your exposure by 68%.
You can find the step-by-step guide here.
The Real Dangers of EMF for Your Health
Most people think about EMFs the way they think about background noise – probably fine, easy to ignore. But the research tells a different story, and it’s not a comfortable one.
Here’s what long-term exposure might lead to, according to some studies:
- Cancer. The IARC doesn’t hand out carcinogen classifications lightly. EMFs made the list and that list includes things like asbestos and formaldehyde.
- Sleep destruction. EMFs interfere with melatonin production. Less melatonin means less sleep and waking up feeling like you never really rested. Studies have shown that valerian root supplements can help you with sleep problems.
- Cognitive decline. EMFs chronic exposure is linked to memory problems, even in young people. To support memory and cognitive function, you can consider supplements such as omega-3 fatty acids, cordyceps, lion’s mane and lemon balm. Personally, I prefer Dr. Nicole Apelian’s healthy brain tincture, because it contains all of these amazing plants in a concentrated form.
- Childhood development. Kids absorb radiation at significantly higher rates than adults. The research on developmental effects is still ongoing, but none of the preliminary results is reassuring.
- Fertility damage. Keeping your phone in your pocket or your laptop on your lap can affect sperm count, motility and DNA integrity.
- Heart irregularities. Some studies have found links between EMF exposure and changes in heart rate variability.
- Hormonal disruption. Your endocrine system is sensitive to electromagnetic interference, no matter if you’re a man or a woman. Chronic exposure has been associated with imbalances that affect mood and metabolism. If you have hormonal problems, make sure you add this to your stockpile.
The scariest part isn’t any single item on that list. It’s that all of it is happening at the same time, every hour and every minute you’re inside your home.
What You Can Actually Do About It
You don’t need to tear anything apart. Small changes in the right places make a real difference.
Your bedroom comes first – that’s where you spend the most consecutive hours without moving. Move your router out of that room if you can, and don’t put your bed against a wall with heavy electrical load running through it.
Then look around at what’s plugged in for no reason. A charger sitting in the wall with nothing connected to it is still creating a field. Unplug what you’re not using – it takes two seconds and it actually matters..
And if you’re running backup power, set it up properly. Skipping the grounding or running an unbalanced load changes how electricity behaves across your entire house, not just near the generator. A system that’s set up right is predictable. One that isn’t spreads the problem everywhere.
Quick wins you can do today:
- Move your router out of your bedroom and away from where you sit for long periods.
- Unplug chargers and power strips you’re not actively using.
- Don’t sleep with your phone on the nightstand – put it across the room or outside the bedroom.
- Push your desk a few inches from the wall if it’s sitting flush against it.
- If you wear a smartwatch or fitness tracker, take it off at night.
- Switch your phone to airplane mode while you sleep.
- If you have a smart meter, check where it’s mounted – if it’s on a bedroom wall, it’s worth knowing.
They’ve Never Had an EMF Problem
There’s another way to reduce EMF signals – living like the Amish. I know it’s almost impossible in this day and age to live completely off-grid, but I challenge you to try it for at least one week. It’s a fun project, and something that will show you what life without electricity and EMFs actually feels like.
If you’re wondering how to do that, you’re in good hands.
Everything you need to know is inside The Amish Ways Academy. It’s led by Eddie Swartzentruber – a former Amish community member who made it his mission to share the off-grid secrets his people have quietly kept for hundreds of years.
And because he wants to spread that knowledge to as many people as possible, he kept the academy at a very small fee. This month there are only 23 spots left – enroll now and learn what a life without dirty electricity looks like.
EMFs aren’t going away. But now you know they’re there and that’s already more than most people will ever realize. The smallest changes, made consistently, add up to something significant. Your home should be a place that restores you. Make sure it actually is.
Editor’s Note: Research into EMFs and ELF fields is still ongoing, and scientists continue to study their long-term effects on human health. Some preliminary studies, including those not conducted on humans, have suggested a higher risk of cancer and other health issues in certain individuals, with children often considered more vulnerable. EMFs are currently classified as a Group 2B carcinogen, which means they are possibly carcinogenic to humans based on limited evidence. This classification does not confirm a direct cause, yet it does signal enough concern for continued research and awareness. (References: Healthline, WHO, NIH).
Frequently Asked Questions
Can EMFs really cause cancer, or is that just fear-mongering?
Not fear-mongering – the WHO’s cancer research arm officially listed EMFs as a carcinogenic risk, alongside asbestos and formaldehyde. The science is still evolving, but the early signals are hard to ignore.
Is there a safe level of EMF exposure?
No clear threshold exists. What we know is that proximity and duration matter – the closer and longer you’re exposed, the worse it gets. You can’t eliminate it entirely, but you can reduce it significantly.
Are children really more at risk than adults?
Yes, by a significant margin. Kids absorb radiation at much higher rates due to thinner skulls and still-developing nervous systems. Their bedroom setup and device habits deserve extra attention.
Do EMF-blocking products actually work?
Some do, most don’t. The most reliable protection is distance, less screen time, and a cleaner electrical setup – not a sticker or a crystal.

As an Registered Professional Engineer who’s licensed in 48 states and who has actually studied EMF’s and made presentations to the public on EMF’s this article is just dangerous and inflammatory. Yes, there is still study being done on this issue and there may still be dangers, but one example of this is the article conflates ELF(Extremely Low Frequency) EMF’s with much higher frequency emissions. The two are not the same. In the home, point sources of EMF’s(tranformers, ie power supplies are the highest sources but the fall off by the cube of the distance from the source. House wiring sources fall off by the square of the distance and seldom produce any measurable magnetic field. As the PE who does live in Amish territory(my neighbor is Amish) yes the article is right, your option is to do without electrical power and use gaslights or candles. I guarantee the fire danger in your house goes up when you use candles for light. Is there a danger here, there may be, but the increased risk from magnetic fields (in my opinion) is far outweighed by the good that comes from having light and power when you need it.
Thank you for sharing your perspective, really appreciate it!
The article isn’t meant to be inflammatory. It’s based on studies and what experts have been discussing publicly, including the fact that EMFs are classified as Group 2B (possibly carcinogenic). There’s no hidden agenda, we simply wanted to make readers aware of an ongoing topic.
We always encourage people to double-check anything they read, even from us. The internet gives everyone the chance to explore different viewpoints and form their own conclusions.
I was an electrician in the Navy. Spent thousands of hours within a few feet of generators and switch gear carrying 450 volts. Now 71, have NO ill effects from EMF exposure. NONE.
Regarding your mention of conflation, the high frequencies, typically wireless, pose a reactive oxygen species threat via disruption of the VGCCs (voltage gated calcium channels) as per the research of Martin Pall.
The lower house current frequencies (60 hertz) threat come from the magnetic fields associated with higher amperages that the wireless. Specific appliances like pumps (fridges) and especially microwaves generate the largest of these fields.
Two things also worth mentioning are that solar energy inverters create “dirty electricity” with high frequency energy spikes. This can be remediated but to the unwary it’s another health threat.
Also, Romex wire most often used in house wiring could instead be substituted with the much more expensive metal clad aka Greenfield wiring duting the home build phase. (Retrofit would be terribly expensive)
There are other paths or entry into a home that also need consideration for hypersensitive individuals.
Please correct me if I’ve errored.
Actually I think the mentioned need. To do their research a little better.
There is a difference between ionizing and non ionizing radiation as well as the frequencies involved. A phd down in Texas proved with a professional radiation meter that levels were far above what is an acceptable but metal screens from a big box store could screen out most of it to an acceptable level. Levels set are done by industry not by science already a proven fact. Just a little bit or research can tell you this including rising cancer rates when to close to cell towers 5G even more so a medical proven fact easily re-searchable.Proven fact industry is only interested in what produces repeated revenue + profits quarterly.
Take a radiation meter out in public and check radiation levels etc. and record them then look up the safe levels. In most city’s the levels are well above safe limits also proven. Cell phones are well known to emit far more radiation than what is permissible under law but they get away with it as usual. The fact is there is a genocide going on to reduce the worlds population by 80-90% Henry Kissinger not his real name and a. Well known soviet agent recruited at Harvard when he was a Sargent in the army as described by a soviet defector who brought the documents with him when he defected not the only thing but only one thing that was described said the same things and worse in investor conferences in short what we are experiencing. Today across the globe. Look up The committee of 300, read “Behold a pale horse” by William cooper,. Confessions of an economic hit man, war is a racket and plenty more of the same things are available you just need to look for it.
There are different ways to heat / cool a home as well as generate electricity, water and anything else needed,. The same. For farming no need for all the crap we are told are needed the Amish are one prime example. Many farms have failed over the years but have you ever heard of an Amish farm failing ? Not one and why when they use nothing modern AG does & they are 100% organic and regenerative they don’t vaccinate and are far healthier than city slickers but this has been all suppressed. Vietnam had no incidents of autism until the IMF started their vaccination programs. No anything until the standard american diet was introduced and everywhere it goes rampant disease follows it just takes time. You can have all the degrees you want and be just as stupid as the guy without any a quote from a PHD.
I actually didn’t know anything about EMFs until now and I clicked on the link from the cancer institute and it’s true, the article doesn’t seem far from the truth, it seems there are many studies made (some from the 80s 90’s ) and we should be aware of this.. It kills us slowly in ways we still haven’t discovered. God Bless, only He knows the Truth
The IARC is a big part of the European Nanny State mentality, you would have to live in a bubble and eat Manna from Heaven to avoid everything they list as ‘carcinogenic’. No Aloe Vera, no Sassafras, dang sure ain’t gonna eat bacon The real danger in your walls, most recent build homes have electric outlets and switches that have stab connectors in addition to the good old screw post connectors. A good electrician would never take the fast and easy way and use stab connectors for household current, but most new homes are pieced together by unlicensed subscontractors, and they use the stabbers. The stab connection overtime loosens and begins to short, then spark, becoming a real fire hazard, and you burn up long before you have a chance at cancer.
If you, (and any other actually respected prepping site,) are wanting to get out info like this to the general public who are, probably, almost as clueless as me, I’d also like to make a couple of suggestions. Now, just taking a guess here, but I’d imagine your readers are anywhere from 17-77 as they say, meaning it’s a huge age range, even if there’s a more average range like 30-55. You probably have people from all walks of life reading your articles, from the CEOs, engineers, doctors, lawyers, & historians to people who might have targeted their education to just a trade like an old- school mechanic (gotta be a computer tech too anymore lol,) truck drivers, veterinary technicians, your neighborhood barber and local tattoo artist, or even security guards, to the farmers, and the less “book smart” but maybe more “street smart,” folks. City dwellers, country folk, and the people in the suburbs. Those who have to work 2 jobs and barely scratch by, the ones that have a trust fund, and the people who started working at 14 (or much earlier,) because that’s life. I’m sure plenty of your readers are disabled in some way, like I am, and we STILL want to be as prepared as we’re able to afford… Even if it’s for that next insane storm event or the zombie apocalypse. But this article made even me have to question your intention… Until I saw your reply to an earlier comment. It honestly has a vague 80s “tinfoil hat” vibe even if that’s completely unintentional.
So things I’d recommend would be better clarity, for sure. Please make sure you make sure you add on how the different types of EMF’s actually differ in a way that is more understandable. As well as including things like that this entire thing: “it’s based on studies and what experts have been discussing publicly, including the fact that EMFs are classified as Group 2B (possibly carcinogenic).” in the actual article and probably in those words… early on. It leads to a more open and honest feeling. I’ve read plenty regarding how the studies are showing how dangerous it is to live around the high EMF zones from industrial areas and even some power lines, but those weren’t discussed, yet they’re very important, especially for people looking to purchase a home or land. And you are correct in that it’s Not something discussed and with the insanely rapid growth of technology, absolutely needs to be… But mega corps will keep it as quickly as possible because it comes down to the money. It’ll cost them to try to fix it (think of the places like Meta… I can only dread how bad living near one of those facilities would truly be in so many ways,) to the fact that then the medical and insurance companies all benefit from the illnesses people might get but probably not link.
You do make valid points and have many good facts and ideas. And I appreciate the variety of information… But please make it a bit more clear, defined, and understandable.
I’m certainly NOT saying that there’s NO RISK from our own homes, Wi-Fi and devices… Because I Don’t Know that. But I know that for people who are already anxious or worried… This can certainly exacerbate and inflate those fears and concerns in unhealthy or unreasonable ways.
I read the whole article which most people most probably don’t do and, and besides the title it doesn’t feel exaggerated, it gives good advice, some of it it’s common sense. It makes you think how much of this technology we’re using every day ,we are taking for granted. I will read more about it, it’s something to think about
One thing I didn’t see mentioned is the fact that you can eliminate WAY more EMF’s if you use WIRED routers connected by Ethernet to your computer. I have tested EMF’s before installing Ethernet cables to my router and after, and it’s a substantial reduction. My router was emitting over 40,000 Milliwatts per square meter when not wired. When I hooked up the Ethernet cable to the computers and turned off WIFI, it’s under 10 Milliwatts, which is what OSHA recommends. The limits set by the industry are way too high. It’s good to get a good EMF meter to test your home. I recommend the Safe & Sound Pro by Safe Living Technologies. Out in the real world, cell towers are emitting 100,000 to 200,000 + daily. Our bodies are not meant to deal with this! Ground yourself – barefoot on the ground (away from that type of exposure) as often as possible.
Also, keeping your phone in Airplane mode as often as possible is helpful to cut down EMR exposure.
cell phone on the other side of the room just for a start. NOT in your hand 12 hrs a day, makes your whole life better.
One poster said, an agency claims everything is a carcinogen by their standards. THAT agency, I dont know, BUT – if you remember about 36 yrs ago, every day something new was declared cancer causing, COFFEE was the new one one day. then coffee was ok, then No then good then BAD, and then science happened ( previously it had NOT been used in the debate) A university in Toronto tested distilled water, with the same test standards they were using for coffee and every other food. result, distilled water ( and everything else) causes cancer. in nature, mice dont drink 2 quarts of water per day. Remember that every time they call ANYTHING a carcinogen ! 2 quarts is used to illustrate the flawed test, the actual amount I dont remember, you can look it up, but the point is the same, it was enough water for 10 mice. WHY ? they didnt want to wait a whole mouse life span, so they “accelerated” the testing, that was the flaw. In fact, remember this when a new product says it will protect or last for 25 OR 50 yrs – did they test for 25 or 50 YEARS ? or did they “accelerate the testing” ?
“well its the same as” well , is it ?
On another note, Anything, posted Anywhere, that has any threat, and a sales pitch, you better realize thats called PRESSURE. Act accordingly.
I am assuming you did not read the reports?
“The WHO’s own cancer research arm, the IARC, has officially classified EMFs as a carcinogenic risk.”

Neither the EMF report nor the cell phone report shows cancer increases? This mailing is dishonest and wrong. Very disappointed in this issue.
